Perfect MTB Shoes
I just bought a new Trek Top Fuel mountain bike with Shimano PD-M8120 Trail Pedals and wanted new shoes for the new bike. I have ridden with various other MTB shoes in the past, but wanted a shoe with the BOA FIT system rather than laces. I also ride in an area with steep rutted climbs and knew that I would be walking the bike uphill in certain instances and wanted a shoe that would be comfortable hiking. The Pearl iZumi X-Alp Summit shoes are simply awesome. They are extremely comfortable on and off the bike. I wear a US size 11 and bought a size 45 in this shoe and it fits perfectly. I highly recommend this shoe.
Great shoe for the money
Great fit, good looking shoes. I had some similar style shimano M162 shoes prior to these, and they were starting to hurt my feet, and were getting too slick for off bike adventures . I looked for a while for a decently priced BOA system shoe and snagged these the first time I saw them. These shoes fit a little roomier in the toe box, and have a little more flexibility for off bike use. They are also much lighter than the shimano shoes , and the grey color is a nice neutral color. Very happy with these shoes so far after about 6 rides. My only complaint so far is the cleat spacing is a little snug for disengagement.
Great for hike-a-bike
These worked great for my recent adventure race. I knew I would be doing a fair amount of hike-a-bike and these shoes did the trick. The sole is stiff at the clip attachment, which reduces fatigue on the bike, but really flexible in the mid-sole, making them easy for running. The tread on the bottom is fairly aggressive, which both helps keep your footing off-trail, and keeps the clip from hitting the ground when walking on pavement. The toe box is roomy enough that I could wiggle my toes, which I like. I am also a fan of the BOA system because it doesn't come loose, and can be tightened on-the-fly, even while biking. The only downside is that the thick tread makes it a bit harder to disengage from the bike pedal.
Phenomenal
I came from the iZUMi Canyons as when on the 'pull' motion of the stroke I felt like my foot was going to pull out of the mesh. Great shoes; I just quickly realized I am a more intense rider than was designed for the shoe. That being said, these were exactly what I needed. The Boa is great, makes the sinching very easy without having to retire over and over to find the right tightness without restricting bloodflow - being able to tighten while riding is a huge benefit as well. Some of the reviews mention them being hard to unclip - I have not had this issue at all personally. they do just fine for me, and I would expect that if unclipping were difficult, a slight adjustment in the pedal side might help with that.
Wears out fast
Using these on the GDMBR. They're okay for hike-a-bike. I love the wide toe box. On the negatives: I wish the cleats were more recessed, because they grind against rocks. The biggest issue is that they're wearing out only 750 miles in.
Ridden these cross state. They are awesome.
I read the bad review because of the crank brothers pedal and I was a bit surprised. Its a failure of your foot or the pedal not the shoe. It just didnt work for you. I have these and they are great. Rode them on my indoor bike daily as well as on my latest ride this time from West Glacier MT to Bozeman MT. They are awesome. My feet stay dry and warm, they are super awesome to walk on and my feet never go numb. The BOA is awesome and I plan to get the dual BOA newer model if they ever stock my size which seems like never. :) I will say the shoes run a bit small as I am a 9.5 but for these I need a 10 (44). If you want a shoe that is very comfortable, quick to take on and off and reliable then this is for you. It has vibram soles and I scurry around like a goat on rocks, gravel, blacktop you name it. An even better thing is that your cleats (shimano) will not scrape or touch the ground so you can walk around without a lot of noise or damage to floors. This is super nice with my indoor riding. I love mine. Period. And I have hundreds of real outdoor miles on them through blistering cold rain and wind so I can vouch for them. My buddy had other shoes and he was always saying his feet were wet and miserable. I dont carry waterproof socks anymore.
Good soles and Boa, not so good uppers
I bought these a couple months ago and initially like them. The boa works great, typically need to give them a half crank after riding for a few minutes. The uppers are terrible. There are holes, but they don’t really breathe. Your feet get hot and sweaty in the summer. I’ve done a few cool weather rides this fall and my feet got chilly. They don’t ventilate, so feet get a little sweaty and the cold makes things worse. Today after a ride, I noticed a huge tear in the side of my shoe when I got home. I don’t recall hitting anything. The material seems like it’s some sort of plastic. If they could change out the upper material, the shoes would be nice. Something a bit more durable with some rip stop and breathability qualities.
Solid All Around Performer
Fit true to size. Typically 9-1/2 street and athletic shoe. Pearl size 43 fits well. Nicely ventilated but have not been riding in warm temps. Boa closure so much easier than old lace ups. Really like this feature. Can be slightly difficult to fully tighten center fully without over tightening top. My work around is to pull the boa wire tight with a nail or finger tip in the mid foot above the arch which create slack that the boa dial then cinches tight. Easy to snap the Boa open to remove the shoes. Vibram soles provide great walkability, are non-slip yet sufficiently rigid for sprinting. I uses this shoe on both a road race bike and trainer with SPD clipless pedals. Cleats are full recessed. No clicking or scratching the floor. Grey color a bit boring. Recommended.
Comfy and warm shoe
These shoes are very comfy and provide decent warmth without being overly hot. They are flexible and easy to hike-a-bike in but a bit too flexy for a long day of efficiency. I read a few odd reviews about unclipping issues. Have not had this on my MTB but did twice out of maybe twenty unclips on GRX (both bikes have XT SPD pedals). Very weird. Will investigate why this could be intermittent. Overall I like these shoes though. I need a roomy toe box and these have it.
Trial by snow, trail, and road
I purchased these shoes one day before beginning a 4-day road/gravel tour, and sized up one size from my usual (from 44 to 45) in hopes of alleviating some pressure point issues. My first day in the shoes was supposed to be a 30+ mile cruise on a recreational trail that devolved into a 56 mile epic that involved a few miles of soft sandy "trail," pushing the bike through 6 miles of snow (and occasional soft exposed shoulder), and 30+ miles of road riding. What did I NOT think about, the whole time? My feet. These shoes worked great both on the bike and off, kept my feet warm and dry in the snow, and left me with no pressure points at the end of the day. I am using hybrid pedals, SPD clips on one side and flat on the other, and the shoes were equally secure in each mode. The next 3 days were less demanding, but I continue to be pleased with the fit and performance of the shoes.
