Sizing Notes

Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.

Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:

Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.

Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.

Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

IS THIS SHOE TRUE TO SIZE? The product Features above will provide a suggestion if Altra advises you to size up or down in this particular shoe. If no such note exists, please order your regular size.

super comfy, super grippy

I got about 125-150 miles(6 months)of trail running and hard trekking in the white mountains before I tore through the outer toe box. These were great right out of the box as I broke them in on a 28 mile hike and my feet instantly loved them. I could tell early that I was gonna tear through the outer toe box(and should have reinforced them myself). I don’t really see it as a design flaw as I normally tear through my trail shoes in the same area, I was just hoping for the price that these would have lived up to their name!!!

Good design features but lacks true width

Wanted to put this shoe on and be amazed but it just didn't happen. The Altra King MT is a nice trail runner but is nothing more than mainline width in the shoe and toe-box. I've purchased over a dozen Altra's in the past four years and the last year and a half with the new LonePeak and now King MT have been disappointments, they are simply not as wide as what Altra originally was putting out. The Timp's are now the only trail sneaker from Altra that will fit my foot and even they are snug and wear out EXTREMELY fast. The last great fitting Altra for me were the Superior 1.5's and the Lonepeak 2.5's, hope they get back to cutting them wider. On the plus side, these are great looking shoes with awesome traction and those with narrower feet just looking for good toe splay will likely do well with these. Hence, I would recommend these but only to people who do not have a wide foot.

Trail runners dream shoe

If you are a fan of zero drop and not a lot of cushion, these should be your go to trail runners. They are the best I've ever ran in for trails in the Northwest that can be muddy and extremely uneven rocky surfaces. Love them and so do my feet and legs.

Comfortable, lightweight, and sturdy

I was a little hesitant to get these shoes because of the thin soles and fragile looking mesh uppers. However, after several long trail runs through rocky, spiny terrain, these shoes have now become my favorite trail runners. The sole is thin, but the cushioning is actually pretty good and my feet did not get sore after running over sharp limestone bedrock. The lateral stability is excellent, which I attribute more to the sole than to the somewhat funky Velcro strap that wraps around the mid-foot. The Vibram MegaGrip Compound soles provide amazing traction on rocky terrain and did not cling to mud after running through some swampy areas. My feet love the wide toe boxes and I have become a fan of the zero drop technology, since for me, it promotes more of a forefoot strike. As other reviewers have noted, the heel on this shoe seems unnecessarily wide. I’m not sure why Altra design it that way, but I found that I was able to adequately secure my feet by cinching up the upper laces. The mesh uppers are very breathable and yet they kept out dust and dirt. So far the mesh has held up, but only time will tell how long they last. Different models of Altra shoes seem to vary in sizing, although I found that my King MT shoes fit true to size.

Very weak upper toe box

This would have been a perfect trail running shoe if not for one huge issue - the uppers above your toes don’t stand a chance! Both of my shoes have the same hole right above my big toes. This is something you might expect after running a few hundred trail miles, but the rips started forming afte only a couple of 15-20 mile trail runs. After I ripped all the way through them (after a total of 4 runs), and I after I got sick of dirt and rocks coming through the holes, I attempted to fix it by using jacket/tent repair tape. That lasted through my first run... now I am back to my $140 shoes with two gapping holes in them. Worst part, I loved them so much after the first run that I immediately purchased another pair. Now I have a brand new pair on the shelf that I dread putting on.

Great trail shoe

Great shoe as this is my second pair of this version. First the good: Keeping a minimal drop, the tread is different from many other popular Altras in that it is less "stacked" i.e. closer to the ground for more stability. The forefoot has more volume for long trail days where the foot swells. The result: absolutely no blisters. I did need to put special loops on the shoe string to keep the heels cinched however. The fabric is highly breathable for summer comfort. That said dry completely if the shoe gets totally saturated (had to toss my first pair due to stench after submerging in glacial steam and not being able to dry). Only problem is the large fabric areas are susceptible to wear especially catching a foot on lava rock; I had to sew a gash together and eventually added my own toe cap with urethane (reportedly the next version has more toe protection). I love this version so much I bought a second pair, as a newer version is rumored to be out next year (probably it will be fine but not waiting for next year).

Good trail runner

Took this out on some local unimproved trails this weekend for 8 miles. Went through mud and muck while keeping my toes dry and was comfortable to boot. Only issue was that with the wider toe box, I should have worn thicker socks as I developed a hot spot on the outer three toes of my right foot. Velcro strap added good stability and was a good feature. Treads were good enough to help with grassy and dirt parts of the trail but not so deep that it felt awkward running on pavement crossings.

fine pair of trail footwear

I was unsure about the minimal insole cushioning but with the "StoneGuard" layer it hasn't been an issue. What I love is feeling like I'm wearing moccasins with super gripping tread. The zero drop plus minimal cushioning translates into feeling low to the ground and very stable footing. The toe room is the real difference maker and the foot lock strap helps keeps everything in place. I've been inspired to get out more often just so I can use this fine pair of footwear!

Message to Altra - Use More Durable Materials!!!!!

This was the longest lasting Altra of the 4 or 5 pairs I purchased over 3 years, but still wore out at the toe bend in a too short a time. Altra seems to value going cheap over going good. I bought my last pair last year, and am switching to Hoka One One to see if they can do better.
