I have 5 pairs of Altras. I was hoping these would provide a bit more cushion than Lone Peak which they seem to do in the store. Once home my foot slide around and the edges cut into my ankle bones. Might try a smaller size but in the store smaller size was too tight. Altras continue to confound me get a great shoe that I love and wish would never we’re out and buy another and they fall apart or don’t fit well.
I bought these for a 2+ week touristy vacation to a rainy European country, and to keep as a goretex all purpose shoe afterward. Figured they'd last for years. I've got mixed feelings about them. They were true to size, and fit generally well, but did require some special lacing to get them just right. For reference, I wear a 10 in Lone Peaks, a 10. 5 in Torins and most altra road shoes, and an 11 in the outroads. A 10. 5 was the right size for me in these. PROS: -good cushioning -comfortable -waterproof (with two weeks of walking, hiking, and biking in on-again, off-again rain, my feet never got wet or cold) -excellent vibram soles -great toebox CONS -took about a week and fifty miles of walking/hiking to break in (I've owned more than 10 pairs of altras, and these are the first to ever need breaking in) -ankle collar could use just a tad more cushioning. I found it stiff and uncomfortable where it hit the lateral side of my ankle for the first week -as mentioned, I've owned more than ten pair of altras, maybe approaching twenty. These were the first to give me a little foot pain on the lateral (outside) flat part of my foot, opposite my arch. Not sure what caused it, but it did eventually go away. Maybe see break-in comment above? -Durability. After two weeks and 100 miles of walking and hiking, and basically zero running, the outsole is already starting to delaminate from the mid-sole. (see pictures) -Heel slippage. I was able to fix this by trying some higher lacing techniques, so it wasn't really a big deal, but still worth noting. -tongue likes to slide sideways a little bit. Not too bad, but enough where I periodically pull it back to recenter it. I'm torn. I've had them for about 3-3. 5 weeks. I've got just a couple days left in my 30 day trial run, but the delaminating sole after just 2-3 weeks makes me question their longevity, and I'm not sure I want to go through the break-in period on another pair. But they did serve their initial purpose, and now that they're broken in, I like them. I think I have to decide by tomorrow if I want to keep them, and maybe try to glue the peeling outsole back on, or try out a pair of LP9+ instead. I think I probably WOULD recommend them, and would hope others have better experiences.
The heel for me was too high and cut right into my ankle. I really wanted to like these shoes but they weren't for me even though I still love Altra!
The Timp 5 are my absolute favorite shoe for backpacking and daily wear. They are a bit worn out so I grabbed a pair of 6s at the Anniversary Sale. I did one hike in them and I have never been in so much pain in my life. I had a hotspot on one toe (which is weird because the toe box is supposed to be huge) and I could barely walk the next day my feet were so beat up. From what reading I could find, they changed the midsole for the 6 and it is now a much stiffer shoe. Luckily found a retailer that still had a pair of 5s in my size.
I bought these for the 0 heel-to-toe drop and the wide toe, both of which make the shoe more comfortable and a better physiologic fit for me. I appreciate the 0 drop making a more natural run.
I’m dealing with some severe ankle issues including arthritis and minor pain from a small bunion in one foot. OnCloud Cloudrock wasn’t helping, and I could barely walk without pain at the end of the day. I started wearing the Timp6 GTX and after a cortisone injection, my pain is 99% gone. I have been converted to Altra for every day footwear and just ordered a pair of Paradigm 8’s and use them in rotation.
These shoes are great for any trail hiking/running, but excel in wet conditions. They have a a bit more cushioning in the sole than required, but they feel great, even after a long day. Plenty of room in the toe box, but the rest of the shoe is fairly snug. I wear a size 12E.
I’m not a runner but I wanted a neutral drop wide toe box shoe for hiking with my dogs and these really delivered. Quality seems great and they were extremely comfortable right out of the box.
