Follow-up on Ankle Buster Review

Since I can't append the prior review, here are photos taken on a perfectly level surface of the heel design issue causing the pronation/sprained ankles. These are still essentially new, so clearly more of a design or manufacturing issue than a wear or user issue.

Nice looking shoe, but it doesn't work for me.

I purchased these to use on opposite days to my Lone Peak 9's. I have worn them only 3 days at work and twice to the park with the dogs. I love the cushion of the footbed and feel an upgrade in traction of the sole as compared to the Lone Peaks, but that's where the good things end for me. I feel like these breath less than the Lone Peak 9, and the toe box is much shallower. I was getting rubbing on the top of my toe knuckles, which I have never experienced before, even with US Army issued boots. This makes the shoe unwearable for me. Sadly these shoes were designed for a low volume foot shape or much flatter across the toes.

Handles like a dream

So far so good. The stack height seems to be a bit higher than the Timp 5, but it feels really good and not overly high. I have taken them on 1 shorter road run and 1 longer trail run and they are an absolute dream on trails. There were some very steep, technical sections and they handled really well and provided great stability. I have an upcoming 100k with 12k of vert, and I have full confidence in them.

Disappointment

I was very excited to see the latest version - TIMP 6. I've been running in my new pair for about a month now, and it's a big disappointment. Irritation on the lateral side of my ankle. This is something I haven't experienced before with TIMPs or any Altra shoe. And I'm not the only one:  https://believeintherun.com/shoe-reviews/altra-timp-6-review/ I've tried adding in (and taking out) shoe inserts, thicker and thinner socks, but nothing seems to work. I've decided that these shoes aren't going to work since the irritation doesn't appear to be going away. Again, a big disappointment.

hiking approved

I was looking for good pair of trail shoes to hike the Camino Ingles last month. A staff member suggested trying these on, I instantly liked how they fit. I went with a half size higher for the hike due to foot swelling, they fit perfectly, and didn't get any blisters for the entire walk. The larger toe box is a bonus as well. I also purchased the latest Brooks Cascadia (which is a solid trail shoe), however the Timp 6 felt more comfortable on my feet. The color offerings for the Timp 6 are funky. I'm happy that I went with the dusty olive option.

Great shoes

I bought the Timp 6 along with a pair of Lone Peak 9+ to compare as I venture into Altra shoes. For me, the Timp 6 comes out as my favorite. It’s super comfortable, without being too cushy. Plenty of toe box room. I have been battling Plantar Fasciitis in my left foot, something I’ve never had before. I have not been running yet in either these or the LP’s, but I have been fast walking a lot of trails. I also like the build quality of the Timp 6, and I feel like they will hold up better to abrasion amd sole wear. Highly recommend.

Great trail shoe

Great trail shoe, though I'm not as well versed in trail shoes yet. Moreover I can't compare it to the Timp 5. Right out of the box it felt great. Good toe box, secure heel, good mid foot etc. laces are nice. Gaiter straps are nice. Sole is super grippy. The only thing to note (maybe just my foot) but the section right between the bottom laces and general toe box area had to break in a bit to be comfy. Took a week for that "crease" to wear in. Probably put around 50+ miles so far. Highly recommend!

Tongue slips to side

The shoes seemed great but I had one major problem. No matter how I lace them including using the provided loop on the tongue, the tongues still slipped off to one side when I wear the shoes. This exposed the laces on one side irritating the top of my foot. I contacted Altra and they suggested buying thin, soft laces and wearing thick socks to prevent foot irritation when the tongues no longer protected the foot from the laces.

Taking on travels

I feel these are good walking shoes and some hiking. I took on 5 mile walk and felt good on my feet. Yet I miss the feel of my 9s that let me feel the ground. I brought these for my travels that will include a lot of walking cobble stone streets, dirt roads, and a mix of elevations and steep inclines. I plan to do at least 10 miles of walking a day. So I will see how these hold up!

wider space at Toe but

I found the shoe a bit stiff to walk on streets but more room in toes than Torin 6. I wanted a bit more support for casual walking but stiff around angles. I'm returning for that reason. Also the laces were a bit short for my style of lacing. The shoe has lots of toe room but runs a bit narrow on the instep area. For trails, I wear the Line Peak 9 mid rise. Just my feedback.
