I purchased the tent in May 2017 from REI and utilized it throughout the summer. It was great, I was very happy with the tent from May - August. The mattress is super comfortable, the tent is incredibly warm, set up isn't quite as easy as advertised but I was willing to take the trade off. It was an abnormally dry summer and in the first 15 or so nights I used the tent I never experienced any major rain event. When I set off in early September for a 5 day camping trip I experienced my first real rain in the tent and found that the rainfly had a major failure in the seam at the peak of the ceiling. With more rain forecasted I was forced to cut my trip short. After reporting the failure to Tepui they informed me that the while the fly was under warranty they wouldn't be able to replace it for two months. Pretty disappointing after shelling out that type of money for what you think is a premium tent. I have purchased multiple ground tents, all of which I've paid a fraction of the price for and never had a fly fail. Even after years of use without resealing. I'm currently waiting to see when the replacement fly shows up before determining whether or not to return the tent to REI.
I love this product. More importantly, my wife loves it. The only drawback to the overall line of tepui is that the size and weight of the tent presents some logistical challenges unless you’re going to mount it on you vehicle and leave it there permanently. I am 70 YO and my Autana 3 weighs 165lbs. My solution was to install a lift system on my garage ceiling that lifts and lowers the tent on to me Jeep WK2 Takes about 20 Minutes to button it down and roll out. Other than that Simply awesome.
If you are on the fence about whether you should get this or if it’s too whimsical/decadent, I am here to tell you this is 100% WORTH IT! Buy it now and join the cult following! Having the second story below made all the difference in the world for camping with our medium/large dogs. Neither of us expected the downstairs to be that spacious, and we were totally blown away by how much time we spent hanging out inside. With the windows and door open, our dogs could chill inside off leash while we hung out inside on folding chairs. The dogs also slept down there just fine with us in the sleep space above. Also, it looks really surreal at night to use a 5 gallon water drum and a headlamp to make an eerie, glowing blue light in the corner of the tent.
This tent is a serious investment, but is built very well, and will likely last forever. It deploys in about 5 minutes with no assistance and 2 minutes with another person. Once deployed it is ready, with no bedroll to lay out, sleeping bag stays in it full time, and no need to find the "perfect" spot. The canopy that comes with this model is a medium weight canvas type material, but with the new zipper-gimp you can change the canopy to a lighter or all mesh one which makes it more versatile. The included annex also adds to the versatility, whether you have more people sleeping or pets that you want under shelter but not in the sleeping area with people. it takes just a few more minutes to attach but is not in the way when not needed. We have the tent mounted to a Thule Xsporter rack (https://www.rei.com/product/871126/thule-xsporter-pro-truck-rack) making it adjustable on height, both for camping and for convenience when I need to use my truck bed. I also can fit in a standard garage without any height issue It seems like a large investment when you compare it to a ground tent but when you compare it to a pop-up camper or some other setup that gets you off the ground, it is not as significant and rather reasonable.
I really love this tent but I am disappointed I bought such a big one, I originally purchased this tent for my wife’s 2019 forester it now sits on my 2011 F-150. I have it rear facing so that way it covers the entire bed. Now for the annex I would not recommend it. But maybe when I really get a good chance to use it I will appreciate it more. This coming weekend will be a big test due to high winds and heavy rain I’m facing for a trip. I will say this it dropped my gas mileage down 5 mpg I’m considering buying lower towers that way my cab blocks the wind from hitting it. Also the instructions from tepui are hot garbage! Had to use a lot of YouTube videos to find out exactly how my tent model was set up which was not clear in the instructions I got.
The tent is well made and is strong in all weather conditions. It works for Ford Explorer 2015 with Yakima ranking system. In raining weather, it doesn't leak but the interior side of the tent getting wet on both sides.
My husband and got decided it was time to stop sleeping on the ground and decided to buy a car top tent. We did lots of research online and decided on the Tepui. It definitely seemed like the best one. We purchased through REI, as we are members and REI has excellent customer service. We showed up to the store and completed the easy assembly of the mounting rails and ladder. When it came time to mount it to our Subaru Outback we hit several major snags. First, the edges of the rails are unfinished and sliced and diced our hands. Second, as we attempted to attach the mounting brackets on the tent to our roof rack, with bleeding fingers, my husband needed my assistance as there wasn't enough room between the car and the rails for him to screw the nut onto the bolt. 45 minutes later we still did not have a single bolt completely secured. It then occurred to us that we would have to go through this nightmare EVERY time we went camping. We looked at the "quick release" add on from FrontRunner for $300 and the rack requirements which didn't look quick or easy and decided a Tepui tent was NOT for us. (Not until they manage to up their game and have a mounting system that is as easy to use as Yakima or Thule). Of course if you have a truck and attached your Tepui over the bed where you have plenty of space to maneuver perhaps this simple screw & nut system is no problem. But if you are like us and you want to quickly throw your tent on your car and go, this mounting system will leave you frustrated and thwarted as you try to screw nuts onto 8 long bolts before your outdoor adventure can even begin. Fortunately for us, Matt Vickers, store manager at REI Northville, MI, was extremely professional and helpful. He offered several options to us and in the end happily refunded our money for the purchase of the tent. He even offered to lend us the used Yakima tent they had in the back of the store for the weekend to see if it might suit our needs better. Despite our disappointment regarding the Tepui tent, we left still very happy REI customers, thanks to Matt.
I had researched for such a long time about RTT’s and I finally narrowed it down to this one and a similar Yakima RTT. I chose Tepui because of the ratings and quality that I had read about. The only reason I gave this tent 4 out of 5 stars is because if two things. 1.) After removing the tent from my Tacoma’s overland bars on the bed of my truck I had noticed that while removing the bolts and brackets that were holding the tent to the overland bars that there were a few bolts that had broken off of the brackets during removal. Normally I would t let this bother me but after spending two thousand dollars on something I would expect higher quality hardware. 2.) There is a small opening that I had noticed one night when opening the tent right at the bottom of the fold of the tent when one flips it to open that has a flap of canvas with Velcro to “cover” the opening. Again, this is something that I feel should be resolved for the price of the RTT. But, it is mostly just a “peace-of-mind” issue for me rather than an error in engineering. Other than these two things that bother me I found the quality of the tent to be exceptional. I recommend this tent to anyone looking for a good RTT or entry level overlanding RTT.
We bought this tent before a camping trip outside Missoula and to Glacier. The description of this tent and annex describe it working for smaller vehicles (even sedans) as well as full size SUVs. We have a Crosstrek. Installation was a huge pain because the tent is so heavy. It's definitely a two (strong) man job, is not something you'll want to remove and re-install multiple times a season, and is also not something you'd want to just leave on your car to drive around town due to size and impact on fuel efficiency. It rained relatively hard the first night, but not torrential. In the morning, we found a couple of inches of standing water in the bottom of the annex. Luckily our bags were in one corner which stayed relatively dry. The annex did pool up a bit at the bottom and was clearly for a larger vehicle, not a sedan or cross over. It rained at least once for each of the next two days and each time in rained, water came in the annex. When we moved camp up to Glacier, we just didn't use the annex, but the tent is small--barely enough room for the two of us to lay next to each other without touching. 3 people would be like sardines. The mattress built in is nice to have, but isn't sufficient alone. It kind of feels like sleeping on a floor with a thick carpet. We had to add some self-inflating sleeping pads to get any sleep. In addition, the quality wasn't what we expected for the price/reputation of this brand. Needless to say, we returned the tent when we got back from the trip.
