I have had 3 pair of the speedcross 3's and I must say they are awesome shoes, Planning for a recent trip I decided I needed a GTX pair for mountain hikes, So decided on the Speedcross 4 GTX I assumed that the same size of my last 3 pair would work (size 9) to my dissmay a 9 was too big, I had to reorder an 8.5 and the fit for me is still a bit wide and "not the glove like fit of the speedcross 3" These are still great shoes but seem to now run a bit wider, I perfer the fit of the old speedcross 3! I also need to give a shout out to REI customer service for sending me the correct size overnight!! REI customer service is second to none!! Thanks!
From 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, I am on a golf course...6 days a week. I perform build out construction for PGA major events around the country. My needs from a pair of shoes are simple: - comfort - keep my feet dry - provide mundane traction - durability The Speedcross 4 exceeded my expectations on all of the above mentioned needs. Additionally, they are extremely light and look pretty slick (IMO). I lucked out with fit on a size 10. I do not have a wide foot or need to pronounce the arch fitment in many of my shoes. This pair fit perfect and only a slight amount of crowding in the toe box on the right foot. They work so well for my job, disc golf, trail running and I even like them for golfing.
I've had the speedcross 4 for 6 weeks now and the sole is seriously worn. That said I've just completed a 182 mile walk, which involved 3 weeks of training to prepare. So, I estimate that the shoes have covered approximately 350 miles. If the sole was a tiny bit harder I would have rated them 5 star. This is my 7th pair so clearly I still love them.
I’ve had a couple of wet trail runs in these shoes and find them to fit well, similarly to other salomon shoes. The support and traction are nice on wet, muddy trails. The color pops and I’m sure I’ve knocked at least a second off my pace. I’d recommend these to someone that’s looking for a water resistant shoe for spring trail runs
OK, two stars may be a bit harsh. Traction is superb and the fit seems a bit more forgiving than the Speedcross 3. However, I bought the GTX version to be, well, waterproof. First run was on a sloppy Western WA trail. Shoes were never submerged but puddles (1 inch deep perhaps) were here and there on the trail. After the first random splashes on top of the toe boxes, shoes were filled with water. No hint of even water resistance, much less waterproof. Drainage, as with the Speedcross 3, is virtually nonexistent. So - finished the run with my feet in size 9 water filled bathtubs. I could tell no difference whatsoever between the GTX version and my old non GTX Speedcrosses. Save the money and forego GTX.
I use these shoes often. I play softball in one pair (and coach my sons baseball team) and I keep the second pair clean to wear on the golf course. I do not slip or spin out. I have never done any tail running in these shoes, or any shoes for that matter. My feet, legs and back do not hurt as bad as some of the more sport specific shoes. I have worn out the tread and will be asking for these again as a Christmas present. Some of the guys I play golf with are now wearing these shoes and are amazed at how comfortable they are without loosing performance.
The initial feel of these was great out of the box. No break in needed. Nice snug fit, light weight, traction, and comfort were all there. After 7 months, I notice the outer mesh located just behind where the toe guard stops began to fray and then tear on both shoe's outer sides. Was my foot too wide? Not sure but I would have hoped the mesh was more durable than that. Definitely an area of the shoe to be addressed as it is an area that's rubbed against. I see the 3 version has this area protected. I may have to go this route. Otherwise a solid shoe.
I love these as my trainers in the early mornings or when I am on loose terrain, (mud, gravel, snow). They are stylish, yet they aren't just pretty. They perform just as good as they look. I've worn them backpacking, and I wished I would have bought a wide, and a half size bigger as by after 25 miles, both my pinky toes were super crammed. These do run narrow, so buy accordingly. & if you plan on doing over 25 miles in a setting, buy a 1/2 size up! Other than that, which was my fault, I love love these!!
Snug fit makes these shoes feel like part of your foot. These shoes are great for running or fast walks on trails. Not so great on pavement, so don't plan on using these where some of your run is on pavement and some on a trail. Also not great at the gym or as a casual shoe around town. These are essentially cleats designed for running off-road. The lugs are deep, making them ideal for wet grass, loose gravel, scree, snow, slush, and mud. I use these for trail walks, and also in the winter for better grip.
I’ve always gone for Salomon shoes for my outdoor pursuits as they are good quality, last for years and feel comfortable. These shoes follow in those footsteps (sorry about the pun!). The quick lace system is a must, so simple. But I went for the Speedcross 4 rather than newer models as I preferred the style. I also wanted something a little different than black shoes and this blue colour is awesome. Really pleased and will always go for and recommend Salomon.
