Great for bigger kids, too
I needed a backpack for my 9-year old and initially bought REI Tarn 18. This is tiny, so I decided to look at Osprey Jet 18, too. Jet 18 is so much larger, it can even contain a sleeping bag, it is a great size for a growing kid. Definitely would work for a longer, overnight backpacking trip. It can contain more than I would let my kid carry right now. I think a light load is important to keep hiking fun. Tarn is better for younger kids and has more comfortable shoulder straps. Jet has somewhat stiff shoulder straps that rubbed my kids neck, we will see how it will work. Both have great pockets. The Jet 18 main compartment strap buckle is too hard to use for kids - I will probably replace the clumsy buckle with something else.
Perfect hiking backpack starter for my 4 year old.
Perfect first pack for my 4 year old. Being a fan of Osprey for my own backpacking I searched around and found this. The hip buckle disperses the weight and allows for the inclusion of a water bladder.Since my son now has his own pack, it has decreased my pack's weight by over 15 pounds since he can "carry his own weight". The cool part is a built-in whistle on the chest strap which can be a bit annoying at first when my son "tested" it, but is good to know he has one handy, just in case. The adjustments ability is great and a perfect miniaturized hiking pack for any kid starting out, without quality being compromised.

Perfect First Pack
I purchased this for my seven year old. It fits him great and he was able to carry about 9 pounds comfortably for long distances. I really like the stretchy pocket on the front. 18 liters is the perfect size for kids in this age group who don’t carry much yet.
Good Kids pack
got these for the Kids 2 years ago when they were 6 + 8 they've used them on many backpacking trips and they still fit well at 8 and 10 years old . the packs are small so it limits the amount of weight each child can carry which is good they are comfortable and both girls can carry their pack easily 4 miles. Usual load is a down blanket, sleeping pad, rain gear, fleece, cup, and water bottle. The kids usually add a toy or book, or something. All the straps are sized correctly for children.
