Rated 5 out of 5 by from great for hiking and fitness I waited to review these shoes until I got some good use out of them. I wore these shoes on a 5 day, 40 mile hike on the Appalachian Trail. Prior to the hike I wore them for a couple weeks to work and to run in in order to break them in. These shoes are great. When carrying less than 30 pounds, these are great hiking shoes even on a "real trail" like the AT. To this day I still use them as my primary fitness shoes (running and biking). I read some review somewhere that they shoes don't have great traction when the trail is wet. I didn't find this to be the case anymore than other shoes/boots I've worn in the past. I love the lacing system. Its working great for me with no problems.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Comfy but not for running Was looking for some trail runners and compared XA Comp 7 CS (size 9.5) with Salomon's XA PRO 3D (size 9), so go half a size bigger on these. The fit of the XA COMP felt better in the store, so I went with these. Tried running with them, but they're not really conducive to running. Too rigid and clunky for that. The Salomon website actually classifies these as hikers with some running. So something that the sales staff should be aware of. However, I really like the way they feel, they're easy to slip on, the waterproofness is great for morning walks with the dogs, and they are a great all around walking, hiking shoe. First time in Salomons and I do like the lacing system. Now I just need to find some trail running shoes.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from narrow toe box v. previous version I've been wearing the Comps since the second edition - quality, comfort and performance have always been right on for day trail hiking with moderate load (i.e. my one year old in a backpack). Unfortunately for me, the 7s are noticeably more narrow in the toe box than the 6s were. The other changes from previous version look promising - less overlays so presumably a more flexible upper. But the more narrow toe box is a non-starter for my foot. These are going back.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice Shoe, but... I have narrow and long feet so I was pleased when I found the XA Comp 5 shoes a couple of years ago; so satisfied that I wanted another pair but they were discontinued before I could buy them. Now that the tread on the XA Comp 5 shoes is wearing out (prematurely?), I bought the XA 7s. I noticed that Salomon replaced the Gore-Tex weatherproofing with something called ClimaShield. My feet seem to sweat much more in the new shoes than they ever did in the XA 5s. I wonder if the new stuff doesn't breathe as well as Gore-Tex did? I also noticed that Salomon has changed the lacing system slightly. Before the laces were anchored to an eyelet so the cinching mechanism always stayed top dead center. Now the laces are more traditional and are not anchored to the shoe, so the cinching system tends to move a bit to the left or right after tightening. Bottom Line: another example where a manufacturer took an almost perfect design and cheapened it (but raised the price).

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Pretty good - so far I exchanged a pair of lighter Salomon Trail shoes that began wearing out even though I never put them through anything hard, mostly just wearing to work or walking around town - if I went "off road" at all, it was on well maintained trails. REI honored their warranty of complete satisfaction, even though I had them over a year, so 5 Stars for that. I hope that these XA Comp7's prove to be more durable. Already they feel more comfortable as far as support and cushioning, but they are a little bit on the snug side, although I'm hoping they stretch out to fit properly. The traction seems beter too, although I haven't tried them out on the trail. For what I was looking for, they seem to fit the bill. I'm rating them "Average" to see how they work out long term.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great versatile travel shoe. I bought prior to a trip to Norway and Switzerland that was mixed with plenty of city walking, but also daytrip hiking in mountains on rocky trails. The insoles were amazingly comfortable with great arch support. The outsoles were plenty of grippy and did well on both cobble stone streets and uneven trails both dry and wet. They were comfortable enough to wear all day as 'tennis shoes' and as 'hikers'. I do not know the extent of how 'waterproof' they are as I only had light rain to contend with. The REI salesperson said the waterproof liner was on the inside of the shoe... as opposed to an external barrier. I would assume one could use some spray on waterproofer to add some additional protection. Overall, I was am very happy with the purchase of these shoes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great shoes! Bought these for my son to take to The Summit (Jamboree). He is very picky with shoes and despite my urging he never wore them before leaving for his trip. When he got home his words were "the shoes were great". They were comfortable from day 1 without any break in, the quick lace system was convenient and easy, and they provided great traction. I would definitely recommend these shoes. One item to note is that he has very wide feet and they fit him well so if you have narrow feet I am not sure how they will fit.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Painful surprise Bought these online a month ago, since I have been overjoyed with Salomon's trail running shoes and have been wearing them almost exclusively for walking in, for the past 3 years. My faith in the maker was unfortunately not well founded with the XA, as I wore them for the first time at Mt. Ranier, and not having broken them in first (my mistake perhaps), I ended up with a foot injury from some light hiking around the area. I suspect the arch support or lack thereof, allowed my foot to flex over the jagged rocks, and for the past 3 weeks I can barely walk, that is, I walk with a limp, due to stressed out tendons. I wish I had bought another pair of the Speedcross 3 instead: A very comfortable shoe, even over rocks.

Some reviews say the toe box is narrow while others say its boxy. I'm looking for a roomy toe box. Do you think this shoe fits the bill? Thanks, Ted

Asked by: TedH
Compared to a shoe like Keen makes, they aren't as roomy, but they don't feel pinched either.

For how long can I expect these to stay waterproof? I have had a couple of pairs of waterproof trail running shoes before and I know that the waterproof membrane doesn't last forever in them.

Asked by: MichaelWW
You should be able to expect the waterproof membranes in these to last about the same amount of time as in your previous shoes, provided you are using them in the same way. You can extend the efficiency of the membranes by cleaning your shoes periodically and reapplying waterproofer to the outside of the shoe. Something like the Nikwax Fabric and Leather Spray Care Kit would do the trick. http://www.rei.com/product/806938

Are the uppers on this shoe resistant to penetration by spear grass?

Asked by: TX Bill
The shoes will provide a reasonable amount of protection against grass seeds and stems. You will have more problems with debris getting into your socks over the tops of the shoes.
