Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.
Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:
Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.
Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.
Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

Bought these for outside work in rough conditions post Hurricane Helene debris recovery job where I'm on my feet for twelve hours shifts. Had them about a week and they look like I've had them for a month after working in mud and dusty conditions. I bought a half size larger than what I normally would due to the reviews saying they ran small or more narrow than regular as far as Altras go, which seems to be true and I'm glad I did. So far they are super comfortable with no complaints and if I need to run I can and they are perfect for walking around on rough chopped wood chips and slick mud. I'm sometimes surprised by how comfortable they are after wearing them all day I don't really want to take them off as I usually do other less comfortable shoes. So idk why they have so many negative reviews. I'm not a huge fan of Altras, but this is my second pair after wearing out a pair of Lone Peaks after a few years. I didn't like running in the lone peaks as much as everyday comfort and hiking for that they are perfect.
This is my 6th pair of Altras since finding the brand a couple of years ago. This model I tried because of the clearance price. Honestly I was disappointed. The shoe hurt me feet even after wearing in. They feel like the slope or rock outward and I have to make an effort to role my foot I ward. It's annoying and uncomfortable. Also the tops at the bend of the toe is already ripling after inly 2 months. All the other pairs I have loved and have not had these issues with.
I just finished a six week trip to Europe with these as my one and only pair of shoes. We did lots of walking in the city, in the woods, gravel, museums and everything, with and without a backpack, totaling probably 250 miles. I have wide feet and had zero issues with rubbing or hotspots. The sole is tough and unlike other Altras, they seem more durable. They still have plenty of life left in them.
First off, don’t put too much value in the negative reviews of the shoe others have written. I have worn the Timp2, Olympus, lone peak, and now these. All of the shoes are going to feel somewhat similar in regard to the zero drop and wide toe box. These are no different in their fit. At the end of the day it will depend on a few things when looking for the perfect trail shoe- cushion, support, weight, and tread type. Point being, this shoe is a great option for anyone looking for a mid-cushion trail shoe with a lower stack height and you can’t beat the price.
I got these for my husband at his request. He normally runs in the Altra Escalante and the Superior. "Not for me," he said. He said the fit was too tight; the toebox was smaller than the original fit and not in a good way. (He ties his shoes fairly tight so his ankle doesn't slip out. His forefoot is wide and his heel is narrow #runnerproblems.) He also wasn't a fan of the stack height, but this might have something to do with the fact that the shoe isn't a great fit in general.
Does what it says on the "tin". Slightly heavier than your normal Road running shoe but not too much with great traction on light trails. Fit wise, the toe box is narrower than the loan peak however it's still wider than most shoes so your little piggies will still have room to wiggle. Another important note, these seem notably longer than the first gen fixing my main gripe with them. Overall great shoe with a pretty wide variety of use cases.
As a novice runner these were one of my first real pairs of running shoes. In the past I have always hated the feel of a large drop in shoes, feeling like I am falling forward as I run has kept me from running consistently. I also enjoy the lower stack height, it gives a good ground feel for my feet. These do well on road and dirt. Many people note that they run small, I personally think they fit true to size, but would recommend trying them on if you get the chance. Only complaint, which is barely a complaint is that they are kinda stiff compared to some shoes (which I enjoy, I love a flat and slappy shoe in general) if they were slightly more squishy I think it would help the ground feel but I really don’t mind it at all.
Narrow. Wish width was noted on description. Really miss the original Altra
They looked like a suitable replacement for my old old Olympus 1.5s. But the fit was not what I expected of an Altra based on several Lone Peak versions.
I've run in Asics Gel-Nimbus for nearly 25 years, but I love the feel of the Altra Outroad 2 running shoes I purchased (on a whim) a couple months ago. I bought these shoes to use on the trails/mountain bike trails I run by our house, and they have a cushioned/comfortable feel plus great traction--including on packed snow. I generally wear a D width shoe but need a wider toe box, and the Altra's felt great on that score. I've also done some road runs with these shoes and they feel great on an asphalt surface too. I love these shoes...and the sale price can't be beat.
