Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.
Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:
Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.
Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.
Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

I bought a pair of Lone Peak 7s, last month. I am still getting used to the wide toe-box and zero drop. I was looking for all-weather shoes and didn’t like how cusiony and supportive the boots were. I bought the sneakers, instead, because they are less abrasive. These feel like nice, supportive Nike or Adidas running shoes. They don’t make your feet work as hard as the 7s. With that said, I want the ultra-minimalism. I would prefer less cushion than even the 7s. The all-weathers are too cushiony, and I want my feet to get used to the form and work harder. I will probably like these more once I break them in.
Bought a little big for my Camino training. First hike with them was 5 miles-already more comfortable than my old shoes. Wide toe box was a game changer for me. Yesterday’s 6 miles in the rain, my feet stayed dry. I’m a convert.
I've been a diehard Altra fan since I discovered them a few years ago. I praise them to anyone who will listen and have recommended them over and over. Previously I've just worn my Lone Peaks all year around and just dealt with cold feet when hiking. This is my first pair of the All-Weather model and I was SO disappointed. They were tight in the front and my heel kept slipping. After removing the foot bed they felt great but that's not sustainable I exchanged them for a half size up that gave me a wee bit more room, but didn't solve the heel slipping without removing the footbed. I had to return. Back to the drawing board to find a comfy, lightweight waterproof hiking shoe for my Flintstone feet. I'm really hoping this can be fixed in future generations.
Got these last fall for hiking in the Swiss Alps. They were completely comfortable from day one, no breaking in required. Our hikes were 3-6 miles, moderate terrain/trails. They were waterproof as promised, no wet feet which I was grateful for on our several wet rainy days. Not my favorite for looks, but definitely a favorite for comfort/performance.
Great for Pacific Northwest hikes and beach walks to keep your feet warm and dry. However, if you are in hotter climates the shoes are too warm in summer. I did learn if you fall into water up to the laces your socks will get damp but it does seem to wick away the water so not miserable while continuing to hike. The lower heel design took a little adjustment compared to my usual running shoes but for hiking on uneven surfaces the Altra helped keep me from falling forward. This shoe fits a narrow heel with the extra eyelet to easily lace a runner's loop.
This is my second pair and I love these shoes! Bought them in the morning and hiked 5 miles that afternoon with no blisters or issues! I love that they’re waterproof so I’m not bothered by mud or puddles
I have been looking for a light weight and WATERPROOF walking/running shoes (not for hiking) for the longest time. I was preparing for my Europe trip 2 months ago and I know there will be lot of rain during their spring season. So I paid a visit to the REI store, the sales associate immediately recommend me this Altra Lone Peak and told me even people walk the Camino buy this. So I just got back from Europe and it is really WATERPROOF and lightweight and very comfortable. Not a drop of water got in.....thank you so much.
Love the shoes, I'm a repeat customer for Altras, BUT I wasn't expecting the shoes to be muddy out of the box. My bad for expecting new shoes to be new.
Comfortable, but not waterproof. I take a couple of step in wet grass and I already feel the water coming in
Bought these last summer. Very comfortable shoes, but waterproofing didn't last one year. Now my feet get wet after walking for an hour in a light drizzle.
