Altra  Experience Wild 3 Trail-Running Shoes - Women's

I’ve been running in Altras for over 10 years now. I really wanted to love these, but the backs are high and very rigid. They hammered into my Achilles during downhills and caused both tendons to flare up. I also ordered the new Lone Peaks ant the same time and their backs have also increased in height and rigidity over previous models. The two pairs have caused months of injury, PT sessions, and unfortunately aren’t even wearable.

They do not run large. They are true to size. And despite the fact that they look wide, they are not wide. Are they available in wide widths? No! Do they fit me? No! Is there an Altra women’s trail runner that is available in wide widths that is not zero drop? No, there isn’t. Am I a satisfied customer? No! These look wide across the toe box but they are tight across the mid foot on me. People with wide feet are people too. I’m sick of shoes that hurt my feet. My search continues …

I wore these for the Enchantments through hike in WA. 21 miles, 7k feet elevation gain and 5k feet elevation loss with lots of steep trails, boulder scrambling, roots etc. These were a life saver, felt very stable and cushy. I didn't have time to properly wear them in (this was my first hike in them eek) so a little moleskin on the heel helped, but overall great support, great traction, the toe box is roomy (I have narrow feet) and allowed for good spread and no rubbing.

These gave me major irritation in the achilles area after an easy 2 mile hike. 2 pair of the wild 2 were amazing for me. Thankfully altra accepts returns.

I love Altra’s and due to my Achilles tendonosis the Experience Wilds saved me! I was able to go for a 4 mile jog without any increase in pain and after a while my Achilles didn’t hurt. I woke up and could walk (IYKYK) without pain. I purchased the 2nd model as same thing they were great. When I purchased the 3 I noticed something changed, the sole was firmer, but I thought little of it as I would where to lone peaks prior. When I decided to go for a jog in my 3’s my Achilles tendon immediately felt that pain again. I looked at the comparison and it says the sole went from high to mid cushion. I’ve actually looked at a different brand because of this, I need something that has a wide toe box and a little heel rise and some extra Cushion I guess.

I'm super pleased with this purchase. It has been a bit of a struggle to find a comfortable trail shoe that works for Southern California groomed or rocky trails and also can transition to small portions of road. So many trail shoes are made for extreme terrain and heavy and uncomfortable. This one was amazing. Right out of the box did 10 mile hilly terrain without any issues. Super comfortable. Definitely will purchase more in the future.

I wanted these to be perfect, and they were so close. I've been looking for new trail runners for hiking because mine are wearing out. I've heard great things about Altra and have been interested in moving to a zero drop shoe, but I liked the fact that these are a 4mm drop so they would make for a good transition shoe from what I'm used to. The fit was perfect for the length and width of my foot, and they are extremely comfortable. I got them home and immediately put them on for about a 1 mile walk to test them out, BUT sadly, they rubbed a blister on the back of one of my ankles because of where they hit. I'm bummed out because I loved everything else about them so I had to return them. I think this issue is super individual so it all depends on your foot. I'd recommend giving these a try. I obviously can't speak to durability since I did not keep them though.

These are my second pair of Altras. I love the width of the toebox and the heel grips my foot well without being too tight. I'm hoping they have decent durability. I use them for everyday walking as well as trails. One issue with this shoe as well as my other Altras, is the depth of the toebox. PLEASE make your shoes a little deeper—my toes hit the top fabric (not end of the shoe) often. It is not a sizing problem.

wide toe box AND works for pronators! They will get dirty so who cares about the color? I am testing them on a backpack next week, NOT Labor Day, too many peeps out there. I also traded pair of other brand shoes and got $19 store credit. Sweet. I have been a member when there was only the original store in Seattle, with the distinct smell. Yup. Put that in your pipe and smoke it!!
