Wore as a base layer in 15-30 degree weather (F) and by itself inside when taking off layers. Had to wear many days in a row on a trip where we walked in a blizzard for 2 hours. I stayed perfectly warm. Odor control is amazing- it does hold my antiperspirant scent a little but I am highly satisfied. Perfect fit as a base, and as itself is a tight but flattering fit. Wore Medium. Soft, not itchy. Exchanging for the same product as a hole developed on the third day of wear, and is the only reason for the dropped star.
I've always bought Mediums from Smart Wool and I've remained the same and this year the medium are too small. So seems their sizing has changed. Love the sweater except for sizing.
Instantly became my favorite wool top. I love the weight, texture, and the dark navy with bronze highlights. I bought two sizes up so I could wear it more as a "sweater" than skin-tight base layer and have received many compliments. I hope SmartWool will keep making it, and in an even greater range of colors.
Bought this to help stay warm while on dog walks in Portland and at the coast. Ended up wearing it daily — super comfy, great sleeve length (I have long arms) and not too heavy. I didn’t notice any itchiness. I typically wore it under a long sleeve tee and hoodie, and the occasional sweater. While Portland and the coast were only mildly cold (it snowed and rained but was not below 30), I found it indispensable and wished I’d bought 2. No issues with wear ‘n tear.
Bought this to replace my old smartwool tops (the "classic" version) after their elbows had worn through after 4 years. Was pleased to see this one has stronger knit on the elbows, but OTOH, threads pull loose randomly all over it, especially on the ventilated areas. Like, whole loops of thread, not just pilling, and after only a few weeks, and in areas velcro would never touch. Pretty disappointing.
I’d give zero stars if possible. I’ve only worn this top 2 times and it already has snags near the cuffs on the sleeves and on the back. I looked at the Patagonia jacket I had on yesterday to see if I had any Velcro or rough areas exposed in those areas, I did not. Don’t buy this unless you will just be sitting around home doing nothing!
This base layer is super warm! That being said, like most wool products, it is a little bit itchy. I ended up deciding to wear a light and tight moisture-wicking shirt underneath to keep some of the itchiness off my torso and it's felt a lot better since then. It isn't as bad as other wool base layers and it will keep you nice and warm, even if it gets wet. I was snowed on multiple times and stayed warm even when the snow melted and my shirt was wet.
LOVE this Smartwool top - both snazzy in terms of design, warm and comfortable. Perfect for a brisk morning or skiing on the slopes. I will continue to buy these as long as they keep coming out. I normally get a size large (they can run a little small), but the medium also seems to fit just as well.
My new favorite athleisure/adventure top. I am between and small and medium, and the medium fits perfectly (5’6”, athletic). The black/gray design on the front and back is so cool, so it’s ideal alone or under a down vest (or with a zillion layers). I’ll be wearing this all winter in Upstate NY.
Runs small, but really great design and very figure flattering.
