Smartwool  Classic Thermal Merino Mock Neck Base Layer Top - Women's

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This top is comfortable and extremely functional - everything one would want and need from a mid-layer that they want to use anywhere and everywhere. The weight/warmth is ideal for use almost year-round (fall-winter-spring), but I could definitely find a use for it in the summer at higher elevations, too. I wore this top everywhere for a few week this fall, from the office to the wilderness and it performed beautifully. To be honest, I also only washed it maybe twice during that whole time - merino is naturally anti-microbial and won't get stinky (even for sweaty people like myself), so it's environmentally-friendly in that it requires less washing. It does a great job managing moisture and regulating your temperature - tested this out thoroughly while working up a sweat and/or hiking in the rain. Wool stays warm even when wet, so I was a-okay in all conditions. I also never once felt any seams or chafed, even with a backpack on. To be more specific, I live in Idaho and I wore this top at higher elevations while cold-weather camping and hiking near the Sawtooths. The mock neck came in handy in the sleeping bag to stay extra cozy. I experienced some light snow and rain, and I stayed perfectly comfortable using this top as my base and mid-layer with either a vest or jacket over top. I also wore it casually to the office, around town and walking the dog (it's been in the low 50's recently), and as expected it did great! The fit was very relaxed when compared to the Classic Thermal Base Layer, so if you like a tighter fit maybe go down a size. I'm 5ft 4in and 145lbs, medium is my usual top size. I love merino, but next to skin just isn’t for me, so I went up 2 sizes for a more relaxed fit, and it was perfect. The neck is not constricting, and the material is very soft. It’s midweight so made for cooler weather or elevation, but I wore it out in the summer when it was mid 80s -not in direct sun all the time- and I wasn’t overheating. I got the navy, mink, and 2 chalk violets because it’s hard to find any merino that works for me so stocking up!

was pleasantly surprised by how well this served as an active layer. I honestly expected it to be far to warm to wear properly while hiking or the likes but it served not to be. The turtle neck closes the difficult to cover gap on the back of the neck and keeps it nice and warm without a buff. I received this in exchange for a review yet speak highly of it regardless.

I love this top and have used it both as an underlayer and on its own. It is slightly dressy and has a classic look which worked well for an evening out. Based on a few comments about running small I ordered a size up. Not needed and it is a bit large: sleeves are too long and quite loose. Too lazy to exchange and have worn it several times.

I really like this shirt. The sleeves are long enough, although just slightly loose so it can be a bit cool on the wrists. The neck is cozy but not tight or constricting. The colours are fun.

got these for long John's for work i work outside in construction so its such a treat having such a solf warm super cumfy bottom layer make the days go by so much better!

Super cute shirt! It's true to size, and fits great. The color is a little more purple than the brown that the name would suggest, but realistic to the color online.

I wore this top for downhill skiing and snowshoeing on some cold winter days recently. It fights well without being tight and the colors together are really pretty.

So disappointed that this pretty top is not available in a 2x! Thanks for the green base layers...
