I switched from wearing Merrells to these Salomons because they were comfortable and the laces are easy. Merrells laces never stayed tied! Then, in less than a year, without hiking or running in them - just everyday wear around shoes - they have completely fallen apart. The foam padding on the heel became shreds within 3 months and the mesh on the outside developed holes quickly. The soles had no problem and neither did the laces. But I took them back to REI where I bought them, and they would not warranty them because they said they could not resell them. I'm livid. I bought them with the understanding that they had a 2 year warranty. I haven't abused them in any way and actually haven't even used them as roughly as they are meant to be used. They just fall apart! I go to REI and they won't replace them, and then Salomon says you have to warranty them through the store you bought them from. Useless warranty!
I've been wearing XA Pro 3Ds for over ten years. I climb Camelback Mountain, Phoenix, AZ, USA, every day. It is a steep, rocky trail rated one step short of technical. Every step is a sharp granite rock ranging from the size of a microwave to a dinner table. The support in the toe, heel, and arch on this shoe are the best of any shoe I've worn. Most of the regular hikers wear them. I've trashed 3-4 pairs a year and found nothing as long lasting, comfortable, and sticky-on-the-rocks as these. For easier trails (smoother footing), like the Grand Canyon, Sedona, or Mt Humphrey, I love the Sense Ride 4. It's lighter, more comfortable and just as sticky--But they don't hold up on the tough trails like Camelback.
When I first purchased these back in 2016 for the remainder of my AT thru-hike, through New England, I thought I had found shoes for life or at the very least my upcoming PCT thru-hike. All of my foot issues seemed to have been solved with the prior versions of this shoe. A robust toe box that can take everything you kick, accidentally or not, the heel cup fit and held my heel perfectly while the midsole worked some magic on my semi-high arches. Not any more with the V8s. The shoe not only fits differently but it looks different. There's now a seam down the middle of the heel, the mesh looks and feels cheaper (and lighter), while the actual support features of the shoe just look cheaper compared to my older version (purchased 2019). The 3D Chassis of the V8s end right above my big toe, and with the flimsier material it just flexes down and puts pressure right on my big toe. The heel cup feels like they added more padding but all that does is now squeeze my heels out on every step. They ended up feeling better as I kept hiking but all around my heels do not feel secure and I worry about hot spots and blisters there and on my big toe. I can't tell if I just need to break these in more, but I seriously doubt these will even be coming on the first leg of my PCT thru-hike and these shoes will probably end up being returned for something else. Is it really too much to ask for a consistent product?
I have been buying and wearing these for the last five years they were brilliant would last about a year, I bought my new pair in June 2022 and they have pretty much disintegrated the soles are completely gone and the upper are tearing and getting holes, someone needs to do some proper quality control. I will have to change shoe brands
Im a thru hikers completing the main three thru hikes in the USA, These are my shoe of choice , ive worn these shoes over thousands of miles and they have always looked after my feet. I just love them
This is the 3rd pair of Salomon XA shoes i have purchased in the past 3 years. To date, I have been very happy with the performance of these shoes. However, this latest purchase did not quite feel right. My ankle comes up from the base of the shoe now and does not have the same "grab" as my previous pairs. This morning I investigated further and took the old and new pair and placed a tape measure at the back of the shoe to measure the ankle support. On the old shoe I measured 3 inches from the base to the top of the ankle support, and on the new shoe it measures 2 3/4 inches. This reduction in height has removed the support for my ankle. I'm not sure if this is a defect or a price cutting move, but it makes the shoe un-wearable for me.
Felt good for a brief try on, but there are some serious design flaws with these. When you cinch the laces a reasonable amount, the zig zags on the side of the feet dig in uncomfortably and create a series of pressure points. That material is stiff, thick and doesn't break in. Also, the toe box is too narrow and lacks padding, creating blister hot spots on the outside toes. I tired the wide version thinking this would solve the issues, but it's not actually any wider - seems they just added more fabric to the sides instead of actually widening the base of the shoe, so both issues remained.
I have notoriously difficult feet to fit - narrow with a high arch - and these shoes fit great. I have probably owned 10 or 12 pair of these, of different iterations, over the years and I am hesitant to switch to another brand. My issue is that the quality has taken a step back - the bottom 'eyelet' wears through from the zip lace movement. The other eyelets are reinforced with a plastic insert, and prior versions of this shoe had fixed this problem by reinforcing the bottom eyelet as well. For some reason Salomon decided to remove the bottom eyelet plastic insert on the latest version of the shoe and caused this issue that had been solved long ago. As long as REI continues with their warrantee practices I will continue to buy these shoes. Normally I would rate these higher but given that Salomon has solved this problem already they only get 2 stars.
I have purchased no less than a dozen pairs of the XA Pro 3d's. The last 5 or so pairs I have purchased are in the trash because the bottom eyelet tears through. There used to be a plastic clip in there that kept that from happening. I have 4 pairs in my closet that I have worn the tread off of but I hate to toss and all 4 have that plastic clip. I love the shoe but they dont last more than a couple of months now without tearing through the bottom eyelet.

I buy the same Salomon XA 3d shoes every couple of years, so I was excited to see a new version. Unfortunately, it seems to have a couple of comfort issues: Heel lift and the to lace cinches and digs in. When walking around, this new version has less of a heel cup and has a heel lift issue. When I tighten the laces down tighter, the lace that goes over the toes digs into the top of the big toe. I went with the old version since it's on clearance and fits better. This new design certainly looks better, nice sleek blacked out, and the materials seem a little nicer.
