Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.
Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:
Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.
Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.
Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

I find these shoes to have a great amount of cush, which is what I feel I need right now. Been suffering through some foot issues, and my Superiors are very low cush, and a bit uncomfortable walking on cement. The only complaint I have is that they.look a little like clown shoes I think this is because the volume inside the toe area is huge. It is much higher than my superiors. All sorts of room to lift my toes up. my Superiors are so cute......but these look huge on my already big feet. The comfort surpasses the looks though, so I am keeping them.
I love the cushioning and great comfort the sole of this shoe has for my plantar fasciitis, but the very thin foam tongue, combined with narrow laces make it very painful across the top of the foot (as another review also said). Not being able to tighten the laces as I would like makes my feet slip around a bit. In addition, the mesh side wall of the shoe has ripped in less than 2 months. I run 6 miles every other day. I would expect to get at least 3-4 months out of a good running shoe. I would love to see improvements made on this shoe and I would give it another try. Just bought my first pair of Torin's, so we'll see how they do.
These don't push down on my prominent big toenails (like Nike Wild Horse) and are a dream to road run in. The foot beds are more comfortable for my decaying ankles than Topo. The forefoot padding is generous. After just a few runs the uppers split horizontally on each side of the forefoot. The company said I could return them, but so far I cannot find another model from any company which is comfortable, light, and well-cushioned under the forefoot. So I keep wearing thee and after 300 miles they still stay on my feet, custom "scuppers" and all. And they still have pretty good cush in the soles, too. My potted cactus plants seem to benefit from whatever extra comes to them on pebbles pulled from the shoes after every run -- up to an ounce per run!
I returned to Altras this year after other brands began to hurt my big toes with their too-narrow toeboxes. I purchased these Duos for running and have been almost completely thrilled with how good they feel and how much cushioning they have. I have the black and pink and I now also wear them to work because my feet love them. It's great that black is an option so I'm not wearing crazy colors to work. If I could change one thing it would be the very stiff, high heel counter. Other than that, the shoes are a dream to wear.
I used these shoes for less than one high school track season and they wore very fast. The sole showed wear within weeks and at the ended was completely worn down with little to no traction. The inside mesh of the both shoes near the ball of my foot RIPPED by the end of the season. The laces are slightly too long and slippery and when I tightened them securely they cut into my ankle. I am not impressed with the durability, however this is disappointing because they are comfortable shoes.
I've been wearing Altras for years. These shoes, for me are good and bad. Bad: tongue needs more padding--the shoe laces put pressure on top of foot; the toe box, for me, is too big--I get a hot spot on my big toe every time I run (this has never happened in any other altra model I've worn); the round shoe laces are uncomfortable (pressure on top of foot)--flat laces are better; the treds pick up rocks and sticks very badly, every run. Good: uppers are light weight and well ventilated for hot days; the padding/foot bed is good. Sizing is also a little different than Altras normally run. I am a 7.5 in everything but Altra--Altras have always been an 8. These shoes--I wear a 7.5. So, I have to alternate wearing these with another model to keep my feet totally happy; I'll probably not get this model again.
Pros: Toe box is great, generous cushioning Cons: Treads are deep and wide and apparently the perfect size for collecting pebbles, sticks etc.
I bought this shoe seeking more cushion for long runs, than my Altra Ones and Escalantes offer, which I love. The positives about Duo are that it's an overall comfortable and substantial shoe. It looks good and appears to be well built. The fit is similar to my other Altras with the wide toe box and ample room to spread out. The downfall was the stiffness of the sole. It feels like a motion control shoe, which I do not need. I wanted pillowy cushioning but instead I felt like I was clomping around on my runs. I tested these on 4 runs and they are going back under Altra's 30 day trial today. FWIW, the person in customer service I spoke with recommended I try the Torin 3.5 instead so I'm going to give that a whirl!
I usually run in the Paradigm for my road running. Although extremely comfortable and plush, I find them a bit narrow at the level of the big toe and have had calluses build there. Now with the DUO, this has totally disappeared as it runs wider and I have had no discomfort at all. They are FAST and definitely light! But definitely not as plush, which I actually like. It is true that you should go down half a size. I did and they are perfect. The only other small issue is at the ankle bone inside the foot... The material seems to go a bit high and it was a little tough to get used to. But after a few runs, I don't feel it anymore, although I have stopped using the ankle lock tying of these shoes... Overall, it is love!
I just ran the Volstate 500k in these. Wow! Right out of the box paired with injinji toe socks, ended up with 1 tiny manageable blister on my right foot. They held up great over the 314 miles in unbearable heat and torrential downpours. The hot asphalt did wear down the sole some but overall, I was expecting a lot more wear at the end. The mesh on the right shoe only had 1 small hole starting. I punished these shoes and they held up nicely. I did purchase them 1/2 size larger to account for foot/ankle swelling and it was a good call. Altras are always my go to shoe because I have morton's neuroma in my left foot but it didn't bother me or flair up at all. Foot splay is a must for me. I love love love these shoes. Please sir, can I have another?!?
