First walking/running shoes with a roomy toe box yet fits a standard width foot. My heel doesn’t slip and the zero drop alleviates pressure on my joints. I’ve had them for 2 months and they have held up beautifully. I love the Vibram soles, the breathable fabric and tongue. The laces are great quality and stay put without me having to double knot them. I accidentally spilled ketchup on them today and they wiped up really with some OnGuard Cleaning spray. I love these shoes. I got them because of a Dulacher corn on my right pinky toe. Apparently I’ve done quite a bit of damage over the years but these Torin 9’s have brought me hope. I’ve reclaimed my fitness with them and so excited to have found Altra walking/running shoes! FYI: I’m normally a 6. 5 but the lady at the mountain outfitters recommended a 7. I’m so glad I heeded her advice!
I have the sea pine/ice/green in a women's size 9. I love love love the color. I also own light blue Torin 8's in a size 9. The Torin 9 is sleeker and seems shorter in length. The toe box is still wide and comfy but the height of toe box feels shorter to me. I'm noticing a loss of wiggle room. I love the extra padding under the ball of my foot. I will update after I've worn these a bit as I just purchased yesterday.
I loved running in the previous versions of the Torin, but this new version feels completely different and made my Achilles tendon flare up after only a few short runs. It feels very firm, not the plush ride that I've come to expect from this shoe. The fit is very different too, it's not as deep in the instep so I have to loosen the laces a lot to make it roomier, but the laces aren't long enough to make it as comfortable as I would like. Taking out the insole helped, but then I started getting a blister. And I don't have a high instep, my foot is on the flatter and narrower side, and this shoe is still too tight.
I was anticipating the 9 for the longest time. I loved the 7, tolerate the differences in the 8, however I cannot wear the 9. The toe bed is very narrow and the shape is off along with the entire sizing. Not a fan of the heal. One of the things I love about the Torin and Paradigm is the sunken, secure feeling the shape of the shoe, especially the heal offers. Seems to be reduced with every new version. The purple lace shoe is the 9 ☹️.
If you are used to running in the torin 8, beware that you will likely need to size up. The torin 9 toe box is more short and narrow than the previous version. I bruised 3 toes on my left foot due to this version of the shoe being smaller. It also caused a soleus strain after only 30 miles; I think the shoe changed my foot strike/pronation. The injuries healed when I switched back to torin 8. For reference I run about 140-180 miles a month and alternate between 2 different pairs of torin 8’s for road miles.
I just got into running for 4 mo. I invested in On Clouds and then later an ASIC stability shoe. Both, in due time gave me shin splints, knee problems etc. I dialed back my 4 mile jog to 1mile and resting 1 week in-between. BIG on doing exercises for my ankles, toes, hip flexor and knees. Well I decided I needed a wider toe box for my wide foot and I am 200lbs. Fleet feet had Altra and they pulled 3 kinds: a stability, extra cushion, and neutral lower drop toe. I went with the neutral Torrin 9. I am normally a size 9 but i go up in half size so its not tiggt. I had to go up to a 10 because my toes touched the shoes. I don't have knee or shin splints so far!! Been in use 3x already. Did 2 mile jogs 3x this week. I am happy!! Also noticed how narrow they are. . . .
I have avoided Altra shoes for years as the one pair I purchased had the toe rubber melt off in normal 100 degree heat. Went to Fleet Feet and tried on Torin 9. I agree that toe box is small. I dislike the tongue material as it has no padding, feels crunchy. But the pain on the bottom of my foot liked the softer footbed. Has a bounce feel, absorbing the slap down of my metatarsals. For me the Torin 9 works. But I do wonder why shoe manufacturers feel they have to keep changing shoes that already have a good reputation.
I like the torin 8. I love the torin 9. I’m a huge fan of vibram in general and I’m so happy they added it to this shoe. Also the profile is smaller than the 8 which I absolutely love. The fit is still awesome.
OK the shoes are great but let us not lose site of the personnel who work at REI. They are the best, always helpful, knowledgeable, kind and patient. I love REI.....wish I didn't have everything I need or I would shop there more often.
Ok so these definitely run way small and narrow. I have super narrow feet and have always been an 8 across all brands. I did have to go with an 8. 5 W - but with that said - I’M OBSESSED with these shoes. I was always an Escalante fan (and the Racers), but these are just next level comfortable and they naturally make me want to run and run faster. I love that they still have the zero drop but more cushion (but in an intelligent way that I can still feel the ground).
