Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.
Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:
Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.
Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.
Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

Super comfortable straight out of the box for a variety of activities from fitness walking, travel to casual wear. Wide toe box but snug fitting heel even without socks. Good support for all day use on pavement, asphalt, industrial carpet and groomed grass. The only thing they weren’t great for was running: the shoe felt flat and lacked any propulsion forward. That being said, this was my first time wearing an Altra shoe and I like them well enough to try this brand in the future.
I have worn Altra since the Intuition days. Escalantes seemingly replaced Intuition at my local running store around 2017 and I've watched the progression from 2.5 to now the 4's. I choose Altra for the same two reasons most folks do: a wide toebox for my duck feet and zero drop to keep my knees happy. The overall trend from Altra I don't love, they seem to be getting narrower. However, they are also getting lighter without losing any of the responsiveness. This review will compare specifically the Escalante 4 to the previous Escalante 3. Pros: I love how much lighter they are. The new colors are epic. Just barely wide enough to be pretty comfortable (although I found this a step back from previous models). Very responsive on pavement and natural ground alike though I prefer more grip for trails. Variety of adjustments mean they can fit a wide variety of feet (I have only tried 3 so far). Better in the rain than the 3's and breathable in temps as high as low 80's. No blisters during testing despite sometimes damp conditions, everything from 5k to training runs for half marathon trail run. Liked the new upper and tongue materials, very conforming and almost like you're not wearing anything. Status Quo: Relatively comfortable and good response. Better for short-mid distances (5k-10k ish is what I tried). Great for speed workouts at the track. I suspect it's still true that the midsole will be the first thing to wear out, and the more long runs the faster it will do so but I haven't fully tested that piece yet. Cons: The laces are SUPER short. Like in the standard lacing pattern, I could barely get them tied (see pics). The toe box got narrower again, or at least felt like it. Something about the new fit (I suspect the narrower width) was making my 3/4 toes go numb about 2 miles in. Foot fatigue and started to feel the cushioning and response were inadequate around mile 6 or 7. Overall: My feet were happier in the 3.0 and I'll probably try to grab a few more pairs before they're gone. Maybe the 5's will be better for the wider toe box again? I know my feet are not getting any narrower . . . .

I love the construction of these shoes, especially for running in hot environments! The material is super breathable but does not seem flimsy. The toe box has a good amount of room so my feet don't feel squished at all, even after getting slightly swollen from 5+ mile runs. The back heel of the show is great too! I'm used to occasionally having running shoes rub in that feel area and cause painful blisters or cuts in the heel, but absolutely no issues in these. Bonus is that the colors pop and look awesome!
This is my first time with a zero drop shoe and I am very impressed. This shoe is so comfortable! The amount of cushion is just right and I really like the wider foot shape. I think these are the lightest shoes I’ve ever ran in and I love how responsive they feel. They are perfect for my runs and also good for walking. I love the color too!
On first opening of the box I was wowed by pop of color these shoes have. Talk about showstopper. I got quite a few compliments on the color, not something I usually receive for running shoes! Altras usually tend to run small for me and I usually have to size up one whole size. These were not the case. I sized up only half size and they fit perfect. I did a break I run of 4 miles on the nearby paved trail and I had zero blisters. I have flat feet and these don’t have the cushion like Im used to, but my feet loved them! They are light weight and breathable which is what I needed leaving in a town that has extremely hot summers. No more sweaty feet! I also wore these shoes in a parade and absolutely no issues for long walks. I have a wide foot in the front and narrow heels. The toe box has room for ample splay and my heels did not slip at all. I definitely will be wearing these all summer!
I love these shoes. Only three stars, I loved them to death in only a few months. I had to add insoles to keep my feet from slipping about inside. The heel is worn out also due to lace of support. I have to tie these quite tight to keep from pulling out with my heel.
First impression of these shoes was that they looked really good. Loved the colors and the minimalistic look. They are very lightweight and are made with a mesh material all over so it’s very breathable. Normally, I order my running shoes half a size up, but the toe box is so roomy that size 7 fit comfortably. I was initially concerned about how the cushioning would fare but it held up really well during all my runs. Now, on to the issue I encountered. Since the upper shoe is made entirely of mesh, it made it difficult to get good support for someone who overpronates. I could feel my foot turning inside the shoe and it took active effort to keep my foot straight while running. Changing the insert helped a bit, but not sure if this will work for everyone. I also found myself having to really tighten the laces in order to feel support around my whole foot which I found a little annoying as I had to pause a few times during my workout in order to retighten. Despite this, I actually enjoyed running in these shoes once I figured out the best way to get the foot support I needed. Overall, the escalante 4 is a very comfortable and lightweight running shoe and I will definitely be reaching for these often for my runs from now on.
The good stuff: I was psyched to see that the Escalante 4 was out--I hadn't run in it since the first iteration. I was aware of some of the reviews of the followups, but the 4 is a throwback to everything I loved about the first Escalante--responsive, light, minimal and stylish enough to wear with casual wear at work or to run errands. The not so great parts: This is an Altra--zero drop at its finest. If you're into minimal shoes, great. If you're not, this shoe is not for you. It's a super light shoe that I would use for speed work, but not as a daily trainer, per se and definitely not for long runs. I feel like I need more cushion for longer treks (anything for 5 miles for me). The lack of a gusseted tongue might allow road debris/dirt into the shoe. I was surprised that it did not shift during runs, though.
If you’re a fan of zero-drop, light-weight trainers you will like these. I had never tried zero-drop before and I am definitely a fan. I used to be a sprinter, always running on my toes, so these are fantastic since they are more conducive to running more mid-foot as opposed to heel strike. Plus, with all my foot issues I’m finding that these are helping strengthen and stretch the trouble areas I’ve been having. They were comfortable right out of the box, but I did put my own insoles in since the ultra-thin insoles included did not have enough arch support for me. I especially like how roomy the toe-box is and the width of the sole lends to really nice support for slight overpronation (Note: I have borderline narrow feet). I normally size up a full size in running shoes, but these were great at only a half size up due to the roomy toe box. They’re extremely light-weight and breathable which is great for the hot AZ summers. The fun colors and style make them great for casual wear as well as athletic endeavors. They worked well-enough for shorter runs and gym workouts, but for longer runs I would probably opt for something with more cushion, as a personal preference since my feet need a little more protection on longer endeavors. Overall, I’ll be wearing these for casual, around town excursions and lighter, gym workouts/runs.
