Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.
Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:
Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.
Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.
Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

I ordered a half size larger than my normal shoe size, as 8 always do with athletic footwear. They were HUGE. I could get two fingers in the back of the shoe. I returned for my regular size and they fit as expected. They seem quite comfortable, but I have yet to run outside in them.
I use for walking (3-12 miles/day). they rapidly reduced my foot pain. Wide toe box & 0-drop changed my life! Fave Shoes!
These shoes are my second pair of Lone Peak shoes. I use them for hiking and not trail running. They run a little small for me as I have to have extra toe room so I bought a half size bigger. I usually wear an 8 in a hiking shoe and I bought 8.5 in these. They are great. There is no break in period for these shoes as they are comfortable to wear from the start. I will never buy any other hiking shoe!
I found these to be very unstable on the trails. While they protected my toes when I rammed into rocks and roots, I was constantly rolling an ankle. I also couldn't feel the ground (too much cushioning). I run rocky trails and prefer to feel the ground. I found this shoe to be too clunky for technical trail running.
These are my first pair of Altra. The concept of the shoes (natural foot positioning, foot shape toe box, cushioned zero drop) was great, but they were too loose, yet my long 2nd toe kept jammed while running downhill on a trail.
I was searching for a pair of shoes to thru hike the John Muir Trail. I purchased these and did a 5 mile test hiking loop. I came back with 2 blisters, one on the outside of my pinky toe and the other on my heel. I have wide feet so I thought the big toe box would be great but it almost felt too big. I'm still reading tons of great reviews so I might try for the Lone Peak 4.0's and see how they do.
So this was my first pair of Altra shoes. I bought them off clearance at the last minute for a trail run. I was pleasantly surprised that the toebox is wider than usual. It's so comfortable I'm almost tempted to use them during my street runs. Highly recommend.
