Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.
Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:
Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.
Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.
Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

I've been battling Morton's Neuroma for years and now bunions. These shoes work great. I've replaced the insoles with my orthotics (for my high arches) which fit within the shoe. No heel slippage out the back. The Zero drop changes my stride in a good way in that the impact of the heel of my foot takes most of the force. Hasn't been making the neuroma flare up. This Zero drop seems to help alleviate the stress on the ball and nerves at the top half of my feet. Also the very wide toe box means I can wear my big toe bunion "spacer" and still have room. I was wearing Saucony Peregrines before this and keep fighting the battle of trying to have happy feet while hitting the trails.
Bought these on a Saturday and then took them on a 20 mile backpacking trip up in the Sawtooths. These shoes did amazing on the rocky, loose terrain, crossed snowfields like a champ and left my feet feeling amazing. No blisters or hot spots! Highly recommend. True to size!
I'm 68 years old, a former long-distance hiker, and now an avid walker with very impressive bunions! My quest is to find shoes wide enough to be comfortable on the front end, without flopping around on the back end, and tough enough to go off-concrete, and into the woods. The customer assistant at REI told me about the wide toe box on the Altra Lone Peaks, so I ordered them online in my regular size 8. Right out of the box I loved them. They are pillow-soft underfoot, and I find the zero-drop heel to be energizing, thrusting me forward, slightly. The hot pink color just plain makes me happy. I've already recommended these to some friends my age, with crazy old feet, like mine. I love them, and want the world to know!
I love the shoes. The fit runs a bit small even after I bought a 1/2 size larger. I needed o go up a full size and the right shoe was undersized even for a 1/2 size larger fit. It may have been miss labeled. I made sure the clerk was aware of the problem but I am not positive they didnt get put right back into circulation. I returned at the local store and bought the elevens. Problem solved and I wore them for a couple days to be certain. They feel good with no pressure points. The laces could be longer to make it easier to get a second knot for those on the trail days
I am hiking the Appalachian trail and admittedly I am not easy on my shoes. I've been wearing these for about 3 weeks and they are falling apart. I've noticed that just about everyone on the trail with these shoes are having the same problem. I am already looking for a new pair of shoes. Too bad because they are super comfy.
I have these 3 stars because I wore them brand new for a 22 mile race, and not one blister! But I was very unhappy with the width on these. Comparing them to my other Lone Peak, these are overall much wider. I even used the stone guard insert, and my feet were slipping quite a bit. To be fair, I have a narrow foot. If you have a wider foot, they might work great for you. Unfortunately I'm going to have to return these. On that note, i still love Altra. They are by far the best short distance run , long distance run, thru-hike shoe I have ever worn. I will never switch brands, but I will skip on the Lone Peak 3.5.
As a former dancer who has a wide-ish forefoot these shoes are a gift from heaven. I hike a lot with my dogs and with these shoes my feet always feel like they could go farther. They have the perfect amount of cushion and road grip. The zero drop really makes a diffrence in how your body feels after a day on the trail. And for once Altra has selected a color that is not hideous - styling and color choice has always been a weakness for Altra shoes. I'm seriously considering buying another pair before they phase these out.
My old Lowa boots finally gave up the ghost just two weeks before a planned hiking/backpacking trip to Arizona. I went to REI to find some new boots, knowing that my bunions and neuropathy would make this a challenging exercise. I tried on multiple boots but nothing felt quite right. Finally, the shoe salesperson suggested the Lone Peaks. They felt great on my feet, but I was a bit worried about using them with a full backpack and if my feet would be protected well enough on tough, rocky trails. I needn't have worried. After five days of wearing them for hours a day of hiking, my feet still felt great, and my whole body actually felt great. No soreness, no pain at all in my feet, no hot spots, no sore muscles. I love these shoes!
Let me first say that these are the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever owned. I was so impressed when I bought them. I felt like I was walking on fluffy pillows. However, after three weeks of owning these shoes and running probably less than 30 miles in them, the rubber flap (not sure of technical term) at the front of the toe has begun to come unattached on both shoes. In addition, some of the fabric on the sides of the shoes is ripping. Lastly, the tread on the bottom of the shoes is almost completely worn off. It sucks. I’m planning to return these shoes as soon as I have time to get our to REI
The left one is perfect, good fit, so comfortable, but not three days after I bought them (in early October), the heel cushion in the right one became detached, bunched up, and now there's a bump that makes for an awkward fit. This isn't an issue I've had with any other shoe and I find it really strange, and I haven't had any luck fixing it. If this had happened a day earlier I would've returned them, unfortunately I went back home to Peru so I'm left with brand new unusable shoes :/
