Wow! I wore the Olympus 5 and had some trouble with the shoes is the sizing and laces too short, the heel too high causing blistering and hot spots BUT THESE SHOES ARE AMAZING! I cannot speak about the new Olymous 6 but the 275 is very comfortable, has an excellent fit in the heel especially with the sock liner (don't feel it but love it!) and the rounded toe box (of course). I haven't taken these shoes on very technical trails with boulders but very lose gravel with medium-ish size gravel. Didn't feel uncomfortable walking on the road/trail, didn't feel the gravel and felt very comfortable in the shoes. Even took them on the pavement and also felt at ease! Love the colors and am holing REI picks up the black and green shoes too! Also, the laces are nice and long leaving plenty of room for adou or knot and 2nd eye hole use, if needed. Home run, Altra!
Love these! There weren’t any reviews yet when I went to the store to try them on but they were so much more comfortable than the timps and seemed like more airflow as well. I wore them the very next day on a 6+ mile hike/jog and loved them. Just got back from an 8 mile backpacking trip in Montana, river crossing included, and they help up great! Great traction, no weird heel ridge, and they dry out fast! Also, great cushion.
I have had the 4s, 5s, and didn't care for the fit of the 6s. But these have knocked it out of the park and are my all-time favorites. Toe box is roomy, the built in garter works (much easier than have to put on gaiters), stable, and plush comfortable. I plan to buy at least one or two more pairs in case next year they change it.
First time writing a review on REI since I'm so happy with the shoe. The minute I put my foot in I was amazed by how comfortable yet stable it is. It's roomy (like altra shoes always are) yet fit like a glove. The cushion is perfectly soft and stable. Scree sleeve is comfortable around ankles. Shoelace is high quality and lock in pretty good. Breathability is good (main reason I chose this over olympus 6). Only downside is it's still a bit heavy, and not a lot of colorways to choose from. Also the clown shoe effect is a bit more exaggerated because of the heavier build of the shoe, but that's a worthwhile tradeoff for such a comfortable shoe.
Love these! They were comfortable right out of the box. They fit a lot like the Olympus 4’s that I loved, without the heel slip. I walked 2 Caminos in the 4’s (500 miles) and did not like the fit of 5’s or 6’s. I do not have many miles on the 275’s yet but I’m hopeful they will hold up like the 4’s.
Simply the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn. Even more than the Lone Peak I’ve been wearing for the past 3 years since I discovered Altras. They are soft yet stable, the slight rocker really helps my gait go more smoothly, of course the roomy toe box allows space that creates total comfort and natural movement.
I stopped into my local REI intent on getting myself a new shoe with spring and summer around the corner. I usually do everything in barefoot sandals, but I want to start getting into higher elevations and more rugged trails. I was drawn to the color way of the shoe and the intense cushioning and the wider toe box. As soon as I put them on it literally felt like slipping on a house shoe versus a constrictive trail shoe. The toe box is a very welcome design and the scree sleeve is crucial for the gravel and rugged terrain of the high desert trails I go on. I felt like I could spring through the air with these things on, and I called them my trampolines. I hit the trail the same night at a very intense incline with a super fine gravel under foot and they rocked . I got them with my 20% off coupon and I would seriously consider getting a second pair. They’re amazing
I bought these because of the new design. although they're about the same weight as the Timp 6 they definitely feel heavier, and they are more stiff. After a 6 Mile trail run, I feel stiff and my ankles hurt. Plus, for some reason, they started squeaking about 20 minutes into the run and it was so obnoxious. These are probably great for hiking, but I don't see them being a functional trail shoe for running. I have an accessory navicular in my feet, it's an extra bone around the ankle, and these made it very difficult to stay comfortable because of how the tongue is designed. I'm sure that's just a me thing. but in case there's someone else out there that has the same type of foot structure, it's something to be aware of. I'll be returning them shortly.
Have always loved the Altra brand and have always bought the Lone Peak model. After hiking over 100 miles in those last year in the Smokies, I found that they weren’t rigid enough and no cushion. I was pleasantly surprised with this model. Love the wide foot box and the extra cushion. I have only gotten 3 miles in a very sandy, tree rooted trail in Florida. They performed very well and I look forward to getting out on some mountains again and seeing how they do.
(Note: I use these for hiking, not running.) My plantar fasciitis-suffering feet have loved the Olympus 5s on the long hikes I like to do each year. I was scared of the reviews of the Olympus 6 and wasn’t sure what I would do when my 5s met their end, so I am relieved that Altra came out with this follow-up to the 6s. They are comfortable right out of the box and the tread looks more durable than the 5s to my eye, though time will tell on that. They feel lighter but still with all the right supports. My only complaint is that because this shoe has the built in “gaiter” at the back, they got rid of all the gaiter attachment points. Altra, the back of the shoe isn’t the only place sand and rocks enter! I added velcro to the back and hooked the front to the laces to accommodate my gaiters, but I wish I didn’t have to. If they fixed that it would be a 5/5.
