The Ayer 2 tan looks awesome with my WRX STI hatchback. This is my first rooftop tent ever. I have a pair of Yakima round bars that this rooftop tent holds onto. I did purchase the anti-condensation mat. Here are some pros and cons: Pro: *About 95 pounds *Super easy setup once the tent is secured onto the bars *Comfy OEM mat included *Every side, including the top, have zipper access to open and close both the cover and the screen (screen can be open to get air circulation) *The ladder is sturdy but just be careful and have some good gripping shoes so you don't slip *Looks awesome *Lots of attention and questions from people Cons: *Where the lining of the tent cover goes through the metal and plastic tracks, the plastic broke. I hit up the warranty team and they are sending me a replacement (the plastic track can be swapped). *Wind noise (not that bad) starting at around 60 mph *MPG - I would say it drops your mpg by about 1-2 mpg. I have a ton of Southern California stop-and-go traffic, so I'm sure with less traffic on the highway would drop your mpg because of the constant aero drag? Probably. Future of the car: Install the ADF 2" lift kit with new wheel and tire combo and enjoy life outdoors with this amazing Tepui rooftop tent. Insta gram: sstihatch
I'm writing this as my initial impressions after install. Just picked up my tent after the 20% member discount, used my dividends, and free shipping with in-store pickup. There's no better pricing that I've seen, even with group buys via online forums. My order was placed 3/24/2018 and despite what REI's online CS told me, this tent DOES have "ZipperGimp". The tent canopy has a zipper allowing you to interchange tent canopies, so that's a big plus. It does have the "new" Tepui logo so I know this isn't old stock and has any improvements they have made. Surprisingly, this came with a nice RATCHETING 13mm wrench for install. However, due to complaints about RTT install in general (Regardless of brand), I purchased a "Xtreme Access" pass-through socket set from Lowe's, which made it pretty easy for the bracket install. Definitely not necessary but socket wrenches are easier. In terms of improvements, I'll be adding dimmable LED lights inside the tent as well as a memory foam mattress topper from Amazon. These are pretty common recommendations based on other online reviewers. Lastly, this tent is 42" wide, which is perfect for my roof rack without having extra hanging off. With that said, if my car was larger...I'd opt for the bigger 3 person Tepui. I am 5'4" and my girlfriend is 5'5" and being short, the tent works out great. But if I were taller, I'd probably feel cramped. Some things for you to consider when shopping.
My wife and I have spent about 50 nights in the tent The one major add I would do if you’re going to be in extreme wind, snow, or rain Is the weather hood I would highly recommend going with Tepui
Courtney and I are on a trip Out West. Over the years I have owned dozens of tents a a couple of RV’s. I always prefer being in a tent because you are more in nature and you can pick secluded locations not accessible by RV. This year we purchased a Tepui tent. It set up in minutes, breaks down just as fast and you can camp literally anywhere you can fit your car. I’m driving a Subaru Impreza (compact) and we are at 10,000 ft as I write this. We have been in heavy rain, wind, and freezing temperatures and have always been safe, warm and comfortable. It even includes a 2.5 inch sleeping pad. If you love the outdoors this tent is a FANTASTIC option!
Awesome roof top tent!!!! Perfect for two people and very comfortable.
I have camped twice in my new Tepui Ayer Sky 2 tent: once on my Scion xD and from now on on my Suzuki Samurai. Both are small vehicles and this tent with its 42”x48” closed footprint is a perfect fit for either. Let’s concentrate why this tent meets my criteria for the Samurai. With this vehicle, size and weight of cargo must be minimized. At 95 lbs., this is the lightest tent I found. I already had Thule gutter-mount towers on my rack system with the load bars cut to 48”. The closed width of the tent centers and leaves 3” per side for mounting other accessories like a future 270° awning. With only a handful of set-up/take-down cycles under my belt, I’m already under ten minutes each way. This is a huge improvement over how I used to camp in the dirt. This addresses another point of criteria. I don’t want to spend hours a day working on setting and breaking camp during a point-to-point overlanding excursion. Better to spend that time en route. Also sleeping 6’+ above ground improves any view. The build quality is excellent! All of the aluminum extrusions in the platform framing is sturdy and the hinge joint should last longer than I will. The rip-stop fabric and screen material are also made durably. Time will tell but, so far, I’m very happy!
I know what most people are thinking, $1000 for a tent? I was thinking the same thing. So I decided to give it a shot knowing if I did not like it, REI had a great return policy so how could I lose. Took it out for a test spin, setup was a breeze and slept like a baby. The only part that was tricky was getting it on top of my 2017 Subaru Forester. Definitely need two people to get it in place and three would be best.
Can't say enough about the quality of this tent. Worth every penny. Set up was easy and getting it secured to my bed rack was also easy. **Only "complaint" was that the built in bed pad was a little stiff for me. I found a 2" memory foam topper for a twin bed and it fit my 2 person tent perfectly. It also made a world of difference.
I absolutely love this tent. I'm glad I went for the version with the zip open roof panels. I went on a camping trip and drove up to an alpine lake and stargazed through the tent. Even with the screen still zipped (to keep bugs out) I could see the stars perfectly. It fits 2 pretty comfortably and could fit 3 people. I like that it is great for both summer and winter camping. You can unzip the side panels to let a breeze through when it's too hot and you could zip up everything and use their all weather hood in the winter. I absolutely recommend!
Having a flat level surface plays a big part in getting a good nights sleep. I’ve hade my tent for a little over a year now and probably logged well over 100 nights in it.. it’s been great not a single issue. I’ve been out in snow storms rains and even extrem winds
