Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent pack - almost perfect + Very comfortable, even though I had the honours of carrying the tent and all rubbish so I was on 27kg if you include the 3 litres of water I would typically carry. + Very large rain cover - big enough to go over anything extra on the outside of the pack too. The cover is stored in the lid. + Great build quality. We had to lower the bags twice and all scrapes and bashings have not shown up. The buckle never popped on the waist band either. + The lid has a HUGE storage area (under the rain cover) and I was very impressed. Also, with two clips and rethreading one piece of tape one can remove it entirely. There is then a strap which converts it into a "moon bag" of sorts. I removed mine each night and kept it as a "grab bag" in case we had to run away in the night as we had security issues. + Mesh external pocket on the outside of the bag is handy for storing jackets and whatever else. + The j-zip is handy for gaining access into the bag too. + A pocket per side on the hip belt is big enough for a cell phone, pepper spray, compass, that sort of stuff. Decent size. + Light weight. - The side pockets are a joke. You can barely squeeze anything into them. They should have allowed more material there. And I'm not sure why they have that dual hole system. I'd rather have had a deep single pocket either side. Would work for small water bottles, very small ones... I used them to shove in gaiters when not in use. Possibly the only feature I'm not impressed with. - There is an external hydration pocket between your back and the bag. Looks impressive and neat and clever. However once loaded I think you could maybe fit a litre in there. I could be wrong. I certainly had zero chance of getting the three litre in. One could say put in the bladder then load the bag, however filling up then becomes a pain. I will get a one litre and try it in the future, so perhaps it's an awesome feature and it's just me. Rate it 5 stars though!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good pack I am taking a 10 day hike and needed a larger bag. I was able to easily pack everything and did a small walk about to determine its fit. It fit the bear container sideways. The zipper on the side for the main compartment is very useful. I measured my torso and selected the large. I do not see any torso adjustments so you best get that right. I also bought the water bladder, filled it up for my test walk and did not feel any pressure on the back.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nothing but the best Use this pack frequently for wilderness bow hunting trips of 4-10 days in colorado and montana. Carry about 50lbs in, and 90-130lbs out for 4-9miles. Never fails. Thrown a few threads but great condition over the last 5 years of use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great fitting pack I bought this before a section hike of the Appalachian Trail (Winding Stair Gap to Fontana Dam. After being shown the size I needed and how to adjust it felt great (except that I tried to carry to much weight). The pack handled everything fine but this 66 year old man shouldn't carry a 50 pound pack. Great product and service from REI.

I see that the daypack has a hydration sleeve, would a 3 liter osprey hydration reservoir fit in both the pack and the day pack? Not sure how much room there is for the reservoir in the daypack.

Asked by: Clev
A 3 liter hydration reservoir will fit in both the removable daypack and the main pack.

Comparing the weight, I noticed that the Aether 85 was one ounce lighter than the 70. Is this correct or a typo?

Asked by: Honeybadger
The weight listed for the Aether 70 AG was incorrect. Thank you for calling this to our attention, we will have our website updated shortly.

The Osprey Aether AG 85 on Osprey web site converts the top to a day pack. Your description above says that the (same?) pack converts to a lumbar pack. It seems the previous years model offered the lumbar pack. Is this model above 2017 model?

Asked by: Alois
The top lid of this pack converts into a small daypack. This is the 2017 model.

can someone tell me the main difference between the older models and the 2017? I'm wondering if its worth the extra $100.

Asked by: soopy
The biggest difference between the new Aether pack and the older models is the new Anti-Gravity (AG) fit system from Osprey. This allows you to better customize the overall fit of the pack giving you a more comfortable carry.

Is the sleeping bag compartment large enough to fit a -20 and does the inside zip shut to form a completely separate compartment (i.e. small things from the main compartment can't fall into the sleeping bag section)?

Asked by: Lila
Without knowing the compressed size of your sleeping bag, we are unable to confirm if it is going to fit. However, many -20 sleeping bags are too large for the sleeping bag compartment on this pack. It is not a completely separate compartment from the main compartment as the divider is removable and not fully sewn into the pack around the edges.

Does this pack come with a rain cover?

Asked by: mooresy19
This pack does not come with a rain cover. The XL Osprey UltraLight Pack Raincover is a good choice. https://www.rei.com/product/878469/osprey-ultralight-pack-raincover-x-large
