Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.
Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:
Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.
Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.
Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

Biggest toe box out there! I have always had to buy up several sizes (or switch to men's shoes) to get a big enough toe box for my flippers, but not with Altra Lone Peaks. They have more sole than I prefer, so I'm still adjusting to the lack of ground feel and toe stubbing. I normally wear minimalist shoes, but needed more support as I've increased the weight I carry and the miles I hike. After 30+ miles on the trail, the only strong complaint is the arch support is too high, causing some foot fatigue and need to stretch repeatedly (only reason for 4 stars). Otherwise, I love not having to tape my toes every day thanks to plenty of wiggle room.
I purchased the Altra Lone Peak after trying Merrills, Keens, and Hokas. The wide toe box allows me to hike in comfort. For the first time ever, I can walk 5 + mil;es without blisters or swelling.
I've had a hard time finding good trail shoes for my narrow feet. When running long distances and technical courses, I need something that will hold my foot in place. I liked the Hoka's cushion, but my toes blister in them. This is the first pair of trail shoes that have not caused blisters and the shoe wraps nicely around my ankle. I'm also happy to see black shoes since they are rare these days.
Ok...let me start by saying I always read the reviews but rarely do I ever write a review. So that being said, my quest for the best running shoes is never ending. I have a long foot that is narrow in the heel and sort of wide in the front with a high arch. This makes finding comfortable running shoes a challenge. I just ordered my second pair of these shoes. The are light like a feather and oh so comfortable. If I could afford to buy more of them I would. I usually wear Hoka's but I think I may be converting to Altra. I wear a 10.5 and I know that's a big shoe size for a girl but the Altra's have made my day with this shoe. Plus I love that they aren't HOT PINK because I hate HOT PINK.
I bought these for walking, as I needed a shoe with a wide toe box for as little pressure as possible. This is what the Altra brand does, but some shoes moreso than others, and some look more goofy. These look great, and are really comfortable, with good cushioning, and zero-drop as well. If you need arch support though you'll want to wear inserts with them, which I do.
Have been running in these for the last 3 weeks and I love the zero drop....almost as much as the wide toe box. Made it easier to run farther. Fits true to size (bought my running shoe size, not standard shoe size). Perfect cushioning -- not too much and not too little. They're not much to look at, but the functionality makes up for it. Will definitely buy this brand again. Oh, and I found the zero drop to be great for running, but not for walking long distances.
I love the wide toe box; my toes are so happy now that they finally have room to move. And the laces are great; no slippage. The shoes are the only shoes I've ever owned that don't bother my feet after about 4-5 miles of hiking! I love them; going to order another pair right now in case they're discontinued.
I went to REI thinking I'd try on the Salomon's I'd been looking at for a couple months and probably buy them. I just happened to try on the Altra Lone Peak and totally fell in love. Most comfortable shoe ever to run in and am logging about 60 miles a week in them right now with awesome comfort and no blisters. I love the cushion and spring of the soles and that I can generally "feel" the trail without the rigid sole I've felt in a bunch of other trail shoes. Pretty sweet shoe!
I've been running on salomon shoes for years and have had some bad luck as of late so decided to try a new shoe. Based on reviews I went with this one. I'm an 8-8.5 medium. I went with the 8.5. This shoe is comfy but wide, very wide. I put in my own insole to take up some room but it really didn't work. I slosh around in it. Strangely it's fine for running but when I tried it for a light hike, no-go...I was sliding forward and hitting my toes on the downhill. I'll ride out this season in this shoe but next year will be on the lookout for something else.
Wore these and walked many miles without blisters or any discomfort and I have some major foot issues! Highly recommend. Looking at the boots for a trip to Africa.
