I really love the idea of this pack. I had just received the kelty tn2 tent as a gift so i thought i would go out and invest in the trail logic collection. Its a great pack but the shoulder straps are so uncomfortable that i couldnt wear it. I gave it a 3 because of an awesome idea but the straps really hold it back. I actually got the rei flash 62 because it was on sale, but you could also organize your gear using the same idea. my clothes go on the front pocket, my tent goes between the outer pocket and the main pocket similar to this pack. Just thought id let you know because that works for me!
Haven't had a chance to take it out on a trip yet, but so far it is great. I took all of my gear out of my old pack and put it in the Kelty and it is 3x more organized than my standard top loading pack. I like that I can grab different things without having to fish around my pack (I am an organized backpacker). I got my 35 degree synthetic bag to fit, but couldn't get the pad in the same pocket. I just put my pad in the main pocket and I still had plenty of room. If I had a down bag I would have no complaints. Weighted it down with 20 pound sacks and it is very comfortable and I walked around with it.
I purchased this backpack during my thru-hike of the AT in 2014. I love the idea of being so very organized and was sad when I had to purchase another pack. Sadly, this pack is not designed to carry loads of over 25lbs for very long. Within three weeks of 35 and less pounds I realized that the hip belt was not nearly substantial enough to correctly support a load on your hips. The single aluminum stay transferred the weight to the hip belt; however, the hip belt is too flimsy to hold it and would bend/sag within minutes of putting the pack on. Even on a day of slack-packing (carrying much less than normal load) the hip belt did not support the weight of rain gear, water, snacks, and a few other small items. All in all- I enjoyed being able to organize my pack effectively- especially for long distance hikes- but until Kelty changes the design of the hip belt I will stick with the third pack that I bought on my trip.
I've been looking for a 50 liter for over 2 years to replace my old bag that I put through the ringer. This bag has it all. There is so much storage that it even has a pocket for your tent that is extremely accessible for quick access. Don't have shorter poles? No problem! Inside the wings of the bags, that also create the compression, are pocket sleeves near the bottom, providing stability so the poles don't fall. Want to make sure your clothes stay dry, but don't have the room inside your tent? No problem again. A 15 liter removable section comes off with 3 quick clips and can now double as a pillow. Kelty had really outdone the norm by making this bag with compression straps and buckles instead of zippers which incidentally lowers weight. The lower compartment hold your sleeping bag and pad, the main compartment holds all your food, tools, stove and heavier equipment. Outer compartment, again removable, holds your clothes, and essentials that may be needed at night. Includes a rain fly for the whole bag. All in all, this really is the perfect bag fora long weekend trip, or even a week long excursion for the ultra light hiker. I will and have recommended this bag to numerous friends.
I'll begin by saying this is a great pack idea. I absolutely love the versatility and you can tell a LOT of thought was put into the big picture... unfortunately, there are some small detail issues that hold this pack back from being great. The good: Lightweight and versatile. You don't realize how nice it is to have everything readily accessible until you use this pack. It doesn't take long to get used to the folding-snap compartments. Besides saving weight, the lack of zippers also increases the durability of this pack. I have had a zipper break on a trip and only noticed when I couldn't find a piece of gear (luckily recovered). The snap away "clothes" compartment is awesome. I use this pack for day hikes, backpacking, and motorcycle camping. Being able to reduce the weight (and size) allows me to use it for all applications without sacrificing comfort or capacity. Pretty cool. Plus, you can use that pouch as a pillow. The bad: I state the bad in hopes that Kelty addresses these issues. If they do, I think this pack would win awards (like its system tent the TN2). The big drawback is adjustability. Or lack thereof. You can't adjust the shoulder straps up or down the stay. The hip straps do not have length-adjustable padding. And to be honest, there could be slightly more padding thickness on the hip straps (like the Osprey Atmos). The most bothersome issue of all is the cut of the shoulder strap pad. It doesn't curve out enough around the neck. After half day hikes it left my neck severely irritated (due to rubbing) to the point where I did not look forward to putting it on the next day. I may have larger than average traps, but I still feel like the shoulder straps should be cut to avoid irritation. Or even better, have a lateral adjustment so you can slide them out wider where they meet the top of the bag. That would be amazing. Though I like the idea of this pack, it unfortunately is not comfortable enough for me to use regularly. That's not to say it won't work for everybody. If the shoulder strap issue was addressed I could recommend this pack to everyone.
Just got it, had heard so many good things thought I would take a chance with it. I had bought a tent, sleeping bag and they fit perfectly with a little expert folding of the tent. I am just getting back into hiking, never had a backpack to do it with before. I am looking forward to my first long hike so I can give a real tryout. When that happens I will be back to give a more indepth review. So far everything I want to fit into it does with no problem. The fit is great and the weight distribution is fantastic. Have taken it on short hikes just to get a feel for it, so far so good.
I love the fact that this pack has a detachable part! I stuff my clothes in it and use it as a pillow. I've only used the pack once so far and it held up well and it felt comfortable. I'm very easy to please so if you are looking for someone who is VERY critical of their gear you might want to look at another review. My only complaint is the sleepingbag section of the pack. You need a sleeping bag that stuffs very small, I mean I had mine in a compression bag and I just couldn't even get it close. If your sleeping bag fits then I don't see any other problems here.
Overall this pack has been great. I quickly figured out that my sleeping bag needs to be inserted from the top. It is possible with a smaller sleeping bag (I am 6'1" and use and extra long bag) this wouldn't be a problem. The mesh that is used to hold the tent, and for the side pockets, easily gets holes. I use a needle and thread to close the holes before they get big and it has not been a problem. If you are hard on your stuff these holes will get big quickly. I love that the compartment for clothes detaches from the rest of the pack, I use it as a pillow.
I purchased this pack to go along with my Kelty TrailLogic TN3 tent and was excited to invest in the entire TrailLogic system. Unfortunately, this pack never even saw the trail due to design issues. Kelty has decided to use rolling closures instead of zippers. This is a great idea, however they didn't make some of the openings big enough for me to be able to put my gear into. For instance, the bottom area which is meant for your sleeping bag, had an opening so small that I don't know how anyone fit a sleeping bag in it! I use a compressed backpacking sleeping bag, which is no way oversized or large at all. Yet it was still too big to fit into the pack. I suppose this is Kelty's way of getting you to buy their sleeping bag. Without being able to put my sleeping bag in the pack, we had to ditch the pack Also, I'm a big guy (6'2 and 220lbs) and this pack ultimately just wasn't big enough to fit me and fit my gear. It might hold a few days worth of supplies, but it would never get me through a 3-5 day trip, it's just too small. Some of the materials didn't seem very heavy duty either compared to other backpacking packs. I think that quality of materials has been sacrificed to help lighten the pack.
I loved the pack. The pros are: The flexible pockets that are able to fit plenty of gear. I would not recommend it for more than 35 pounds of gear as the the hip belt could use some padding. Also, the detachable compartment turns the backpack into a great daypack. cons: the water bladder compartment was a bit small and not deep enough to hold a 3 litter bladder.
