Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.
Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:
Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.
Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.
Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

I love Altra for making a very broad range of shoes with zero drop. The Outroad is great for everyday use, walking / hiking and running. The lugs on the sole are fairly aggressive, I don't see any problem using them on trails. The foam provides a lot of cushion but is still supportive. I found the Outroad to be run about half size large. I wear size 11 in other Altras, but had to go with 10.5 in Outroad. For anyone that isn't super familiar with Altra: in addition to zero drop, they have a natural foot shape that allows more space in the toe box compared to most running shoes. To fit a range of different feet, they come in three different "Footshapes", and it's important to know which one you're buying. There's the Original (too wide for me), the Standard (ok for me) and the Slim (perfect for me). I would consider my foot average width, but the only way to figure out which style Altra works for me was to try several different models. Unfortunately the product descriptions either on Altra or on retailer sites like REI usually do not include this critical info.To figure out which shape a particular model is, you need to visit Altra website and find the Footshapes page, and from there link to each of the three collections. This all may seem like TMI, but is necessary to get a good fit. If you're like me, with average width foot and you buy the Original foot shape, they will feel way too loose and unsupportive. If you have a wide forefoot, you probably will not enjoy the Slim shape. Just to make things more confusing (but to fit more people), some models are also offered in "Wide" which I assume means the whole shoe is wide not just the forefoot. Worth investing a bit of time in my opinion to get shoes that fit well.
Really really bad fit. Midfoot is way too narrow and my feet hang off the inside and outside of the shoe. These are not Altras anymore, They are just another outsourced shoe company. These were also the best fitting Altras in the store. Find another company or buy an older model. Ill be buying a pair of Timp 4s again off of amazon. I can't comment on durability as I only wore them for 3 days/16hrs a day of walking.
Pluses for me: There is enough cushion in the forefoot for forefoot strikers. Shooe is flexible and maintains ground feel while feeling a bit cushioned and bouncy and nimble, so mens running fun. Can run with confidence in the city, through leaves, gravel, grass, wet and dry brick and sidewalks. You still have to do the work--it is not rocking you or blasting you into another time "zone." It is light and able to go anywhere. Good for a 10K distance. Stable, too.
A really good, zero drop walk around shoe. Good for daily walking, light running or light hiking. 27mm stack height, which is 2mm more cushioning than the Lone Peak and it weighs less than the Lone Peak.
Big toe box makes a big difference. Comfiest trail shoes I own.
These are some shoes! Great fit, support, comfort.
