My wife and I bought this for just the two of us for car camping, have used it once and think it's great. We put a full size air mattress in there and still had plenty of room to stand, move around and change. I'm pictured inside the tent and am 5'10" for reference. Did a lot of looking around online, and in the end couldn't beat the price for this size of a tent. The dark room aspect was a huge bonus, though you have to have the rain fly on for that effect which does make the tent a little stuffy. Tried to use the guy lines on the rain fly to pull the fly slightly away from the sides of the tent to allow air movement, that worked pretty well. We neglected to put in the final pole at the front of the fly to give it the arch shown in the stock photo, but it came with it. Only critiques would be I would love for them to offer a footprint for this tent and the interior could have done with several more sewn in interior mesh pockets, I think it has just one set in one corner. It hasn't had to endure rain or heavy winds yet, so can't comment on those. Material and zipper seem quality and I hope they'll last a long time. Paid extra for two day shipping and that went perfectly too. Overall extremely pleased!
This Coleman Dark Room Technology tent was EXACTLY the type of tent that I needed because it is made of high quality material, cutting-edge tent design, and lots of room for the price. Initially, I thought it was going to take me a long time to put this tent up, but it really didn't. It was fairly easy and once it was up - WOW!! - I was thoroughly impressed with design, the way it cooled down the temperature during the daytime, and kept me warm at night. If you need a tent that is environmentally-friendly and LOOKS-STYLISH, this Coleman 8 Person Dark Room Technology SKYDOME is it!
The design is good, but it lacks Coleman quality. I have 2 of these that I can’t use anymore without replacing the rain fly and poles. I purchased these prior to becoming a member last year in or around August. Both failed on lake Texoma in 20 mph winds. The reason for the failure is the outer edge of the rainfly pulled loose from the rainfly cover. I have ample pics to show this. They were both new with all the guidelines set out. The tent stayed dry until the outer edge came loose from the rainfly. When this happened, the tent caved in, and poles snapped. Not to mention all the barrels on the pole ends the glue didn't work. This made an issue with single stitching on the rainfly cascade into a bigger issue. I have camped all my life and probably have over a dozen tents. Have never had a Coleman failure like this. I have always trusted weather tech and the bathtub style tents. Very fortunately I had my Hooligan tent in the truck for backup. I spoke with REI in Plano and the young lady stated I needed to get the tents repaired by a 3rd party. I wouldn't mind doing this, but I would have to provide additional material to reinforce the outer edge of the rain fly and or buy new rainfly's and have them sewn better and correctly. The other issue is that there are no stake points along the tent except the 4 corners. This causes an issue with the doors and allows the wind to grab hold and push on the sides. I have 2 other Dark Room tents that are smaller, and they worked down the Brazos River just fine with 30 + MPH winds and a crazy hailstorm the first night out. I have 2 older tents from early 2000 that have held up in several flash floods with high winds. Now I have concerns about the Wonderland 6 I bought as was under the impression it had DAC poles, but reading more reviews I might return the Tent before I even use it along with the mudroom and footprint and just order a different 6- or 8-person tent altogether. I would like to know why Coleman older tents are made with common sense and the new ones appear to be single use throw away tents. I asked if I could return store credit and was told that I needed to fix it first. I'm not dealing with Coleman online and email customer service anymore. Not sure they have ever even set up a tent let alone know what one is. THIS TENT IS A GOOD DESIGN IDEA BUT POOR QUALITY - not paying attention to details. I’m 54 and was in the Scouts and camp all the time, to have them question me like they did and all the pictures I sent was maddening. At least my Coleman stove made in the 70's still works.
I was looking for a tent with a screened porch and found this tent and was glad to try it out. Overall a nice tent size wise I think maybe fits 4, says two queen beds maybe if they are touching but if you have cots like we do really think this tent is big enough for two people. If you want to be able to move around. The screen porch is nice because it zips all around keeping bugs out. Does have mesh by the tent door too which is nice for water spills. I do wish the screened in porch was bigger too fits our two chairs a cooler but if we sit in the edge the screen is there and if it’s raining we would get wet. We also don’t feel the tent is a blackout. A lot of light came in around 6 am and was pretty warm. Lastly the screen porch zipper as others have said it would be nice to have a eyelet for a stake to hold it down for easier zipping and closing. Colorado doesn’t get much for rain so haven’t experienced that yet but we’ll see how the tent holds up.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] While the tent claims to be 5 minute setup its more like 15-20 the first time, not knowing where the poles and ropes hook and such. But after all that it seems like it would be a breeze to set up now that I know where things go! I really like that the main poles are pre-attatched to the tent so its easy to keep track of and easy to disassemble. The "Dark Room Technology" is excellent so you don't get woken up by dawns early light! And it even comes with a little tent fabricated "mat" for the front of the tent so you dont bring dirt and such inside the tent. Overall the quality of this tent is outstanding, I really like the design concept and how they are making it easier for regular people like me to setup!!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The coleman 8 person dark room, skydome tent is absolutely massive. I didnt realize how big until I set it up in my living room to see what exactly i was dealing with. Definitely a lot of head room, I'm 5'1" and could walk freely in it with no issue. Even my 13 year old who is 5'7" had no issue either. Can definitely fit 2 queen sized air mattresses with no problem. It truly is dark once everything is put together and I like that coleman changed the top from lime green to a darker blue so it doesnt attract as many bugs. What I dont care for is that its definitely not a 5 minute set up, even with someone helping it took about 10. It is a straightforward set up but the tent is so massive it does take time and you definitely need a helper. Also, putting it back in the bag is a little bit of a pain however the bag does have a strip you can take off to make the bag bigger and make the tent easier to put away.
Homerun buy!! Easy to setup after initial setup (first times always the slowest)... Once you do it once it's a breeze. Love the dark for sleeping beyond sunrise. Very spacious. 6ft tall and had no issues. Very happy with this tent.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We are so very happy with our family’s new tent! We are a family of four but if you are familiar with the camping world, a tent made for four is not actually super comfortable for four humans! I like to have some room between beds/bags and whatnot rather than be piled on top of one another. This tent is actually so generously sized I think, depending on individual sizes, it could possibly sleep 10+! And I LOVE it! It’s like they were actually considering campers’ personal affects in the design which is so refreshing. I also love the dark room technology. It is absolutely fabulous and really makes the tent feel so calming at any time of day. Not much is worse than wanting to sleep in a bit to the blazing sun in your eyes at 6 am. Cons: It did take closer to 30 minutes to assemble, and it was frustrating that it didn’t easily fit back into the bag after disassembly. But this seems to be the case of pretty much every tent manufacturer ever. Tentmakers, if you are listening, why oh why can’t you make the bag just slightly larger than the tent?! But I digress. This is a wonderful tent and I do highly recommend it.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We have been a camping family of 5 for 10+ years. We were so excited to try out the Coleman 8 person Darkroom tent to see if it lived up to its name! And it did! Set up was easy because the poles are already attached to the bottom of the tent so there's no chance of losing them! The setup is quick and easy. I love that you can opt to leave the top cover off and have a huge screened dome if you'd like. On nights when the weather is cooperating it would be fantastic to sleep under the stars with a beautiful view from your air mattress! Once you put the cover on it is amazing how dark it is inside. I've truly never seen a tent so dark. This is a great feature for those that have a hard time sleeping with potentially a lot of light in your camp site, but it's also great in the daytime for napping kids. Another great feature in the 8 person tent is the size! The way the sides and roof of the tent are set up to allow for adults to stand up straight and not have to awkwardly bend to move around! It have an ample amount of space for our family of 5. You can easily fit 2 queen air mattresses and still have room to move around. Coleman came out with a fantastic product when they created the dark room tent series!
We bought this tent thinking it was a good deal. First time using it we had a storm roll through. The wind wasn't that strong; the rain was. We thought for sure the rain would soak things pretty badly. Turns out the wind was the real problem and tore our rainfly/snapped the shock cord connecting the poles (which are CONNECTED to the tent). I was able to repair the shock cord, but the rainfly literally came apart and it's easy to see why: it wasn't properly stitched. Easy replacement, right? Nope. Not even offered
