Temperature ratings are intended as a guideline to help you compare products, rather than a guarantee of warmth, since many different factors contribute to your comfort while you sleep. Backpacking bags are typically rated for temperature according to an independent testing protocol—currently International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 23537, though some older items followed European Norm (EN) 13537. Testing is based on a person wearing one base layer and a pair of socks, sleeping on an insulated surface with a minimum R-value of 5.38.

Each bag then gets 2 ratings: the Comfort rating is the lowest temperature at which the bag will keep the average "cold sleeper" comfortable, and the Lower Limit rating is the lowest temperature at which the bag will keep the average "warm sleeper" comfortable. Some brands determine their own temperature rating by aligning to the Comfort rating for women’s bags, to the Lower Limit rating for men’s bags, or somewhere in the middle for nongendered bags.

comfortable side sleeper

Received free product

I could only test this in 30 degree weather so didnt get to check the 15 degree limits. I’m a cold sleeper and tried to wear a single light layer to make up for it. In a nutshell, the system worked pretty well. The inner bag by itself w the above single layer was slightly cool for me and I needed the 2 bag components by about 3 am. The outer sleeve fit fine on my sleeping pad and did help w obnoxious sliding. Both bags roomy enough in the shoulders and feet. Zippers sometimes didnt slide great but also never caught.

snuggly warm

Was tired of being cold but also wanted something light for summer. A friend had something similar and after researching bags I kept coming back to this one. The only real con I've had was after sleeping on a small incline this past weekend I noticed I tended to slide down my pad, I only mention it because I don't remember experiencing that with my old bag. Kept me nice and warm on campouts in March thru April as well as a last little frost this past weekend. I've done about 5 trips with it and we are currently located Germany. Also my son was able to wiggle into my bag with me for a morning snuggle without any heatloss. The zippers can be a little tricky so I would also advise taking your time getting used to them so they don't catch. Hoping I continue to enjoy it this summer.

Very versatile sleeping bag system

Received free product

The Big Agnes Roxy Ann 3N1 15 (women’s long) is a great sleep system. It includes two sleeping bags...1) a 30 degree mummy-style bag, and 2) a 50 degree bag that attaches to your sleeping pad. It measures 70 inches x 33 inches. Both bags are amazing in their own unique way, but together they are incredible. This is what I like about the first bag, and by first bag, I mean the mummy bag insert. This bag is rated for 30 degrees and is filled with down (Downtek – PFC-Free water repellent down). I am an active, side-sleeper. Active here mainly refers to how I sleep. I toss and turn. Typically, I don’t care for mummy bags because I feel too confined as I move about. This bag was the exception though. I had plenty of room to side sleep and move about. Very rarely will I fully zip up a sleeping bag, I like to hang an arm out and I don’t want to feel like I’m wrapped in a tight swaddle. While trying out this bag, I tried it both zipped fully, and how I’d normally have it open several inches from the top. With the bag fully zipped, I felt I had enough room to move my arms around while I tossed and turned. I was so cozy; I didn’t feel the need to unzip it partially. This may be due to the zipper being on the top vs the side. This is the first time I’ve used a bag with this design. I also enjoyed it how I’d normally use it with it partially unzipped. This worked well in the sleep system because when I did unzip it, I was still covered by the second bag. WIN – WIN! Now, the second bag. This is what I like about the second bag, the bag that fits your sleeping pad. First, it fit my sleeping pad wonderfully. My sleeping pad is a generic R5 sleeping pad that I picked up somewhere over the years. It fit the dimensions required for the Big Agnes Roxy Ann 3N1 15 so I decided to give it ago. The bag stayed wrapped on the pad all night, even as I tossed and turned. So back and forth and up and down we went all night…. but the bag stayed on the pad, or rather the pad stayed attached to the bag. This bag, by itself, is rated for 50 degrees. I haven’t tried it in the summer yet, but I anticipate that I will love it. It may even take over as my summer backpacking bag because it packed down so tight and light. This bag’s filling is down. I love that this second bag also zips from both sides. It can be unzipped to be used more as a throw blanket while still attached to the sleeping pad. It can be zipped/unzipped from either or both sides to help regulate temperature and comfort. It is also very convenient when you have a little kid that wakes up in the middle of the night and wants to be held by mom. I loved that my daughter was able to snuggle in with me without breeching the first bag. Again, WIN-WIN! The only problem that I had was that the zipper caught on the fabric when I wasn’t paying attention or was half-asleep. I’m sure it is user error vs design because when you look at the zipper it looks like it shouldn’t catch at all. I never had this problem with the mummy-style bag. This is a great sleeping bag system that gives you a lot of options and temperature range. I’m looking forward to using it for years to come. The Big Agnes Roxy Ann 3N1 15 comes with a mesh storage bag.

Comfortable & Versatile, too heavy for backpacking

Received free product

The sleeping bag is comfortable and versatile but needs some improvements. I especially appreciated that the bag is long enough for my height and roomy enough for a woman's shape. INNER BAG: • roomy enough for side sleeping and moving around – great shape • zipper seemed too lightweight, hard to zip & unzip from inside the bag • Hood has great loft and is comfortable but I would have liked to adjust it, especially if I use the bag in warmer weather. If I don’t want to use the hood my only choice is to lie on top of it. No cord for adjustment. • There were some areas with high loft and then a few areas where there was no fill – I don’t know if this is something that will even out over time • Fabric is very comfortable OUTER BAG: • It was a bit complicated to figure out exactly how to put it together with the INNER BAG and the sleeping pad. • Really good zippers – I’d like to see the same zippers on the INNER BAG • Clever idea to have the 3N1 system OTHER COMMENTS: • Stuff sack needs a handle • It packs too big and too heavy for backpacking, except for short trips • Good bag and system for car camping or kayak camping where weight and bulk aren’t an issue • Since it is cold out (November) I didn’t try using the inner bag or outer bag in my tent separately. I am looking forward to trying them out in warm-weather camping. Thank you for giving me a chance to test out the 3N1 sysem.
