Temperature ratings are intended as a guideline to help you compare products, rather than a guarantee of warmth, since many different factors contribute to your comfort while you sleep. Backpacking bags are typically rated for temperature according to an independent testing protocol—currently International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 23537, though some older items followed European Norm (EN) 13537. Testing is based on a person wearing one base layer and a pair of socks, sleeping on an insulated surface with a minimum R-value of 5.38.

Each bag then gets 2 ratings: the Comfort rating is the lowest temperature at which the bag will keep the average "cold sleeper" comfortable, and the Lower Limit rating is the lowest temperature at which the bag will keep the average "warm sleeper" comfortable. Some brands determine their own temperature rating by aligning to the Comfort rating for women’s bags, to the Lower Limit rating for men’s bags, or somewhere in the middle for nongendered bags.

Overall great bag! Just not for me.

I took this sleeping bag out for one night on a backpacking trip. (Both parts of the sleeping bag) and it performed really well. I am a tosser and turner, and I found that the two part system wasn't great for that, the material of the bag was very smooth and I felt myself falling off the pad, while still enclosed in the external bag, which was hard to readjust since the external bag is fixed to the sleeping pad. I think it is easier to readjust with your bag sitting on top of the pad instead of being fixed to the pad, unfortunately. Originally I bought this bag with the goal of using them separately, and combined for different purposes, which I still believe would work great, especially for someone who doesn't toss and turn as much as myself. My setback, was that the internal bag does not come with the same features as the sidewinder bags that are purchased on their own, which made me feel like the value of the bag was in that it was coming with two cheaper bags, instead of being one bag with a 15 degree rating and some of the nicer features. I hope this makes sense! Overall, this bag is very comfortable and a good multipurpose bag since you can separate it and use it in different weather conditions. I was really hoping that I could use the little hand pockets, but the inner bag does not have them, and I think the chances of me taking out the 50 degree bag are lower than me taking out the 30 degree bag that doesn't have that feature.

Only sleeping bag I have ever enjoyed sleeping in!

Honestly the only sleeping bag I have ever owned that I look forward to sleeping in! I have camped with this in mild Northeast winter weather, spring, summer and fall. I had never felt cold or too hot (even in the middle of summer sleeping in poorly ventilated scout camp canvas tents. Im a side sleeper and hate my legs feeling restricted. Not an issue at all with this. I’m only 5’2” but own the long to accommodate my Haven tent mattress pad. The only issue I have found is if you instinctually try reach outside of your sleeping bag to unzip at that angle the zipper doesn’t zip well. Then I realized, and unzipped from the inside and had no issues. My daughter has the same bag in the short version and she also struggled with this and would complain she would get stuck in her bag until I explained to flip it inward. I recommend this bag to everyone I talk to about camping.

This is not a good choice

I tried this bag overnight at home first. The outer bag is a tangled mess. The inner bag is confining and tight. If you used both bags together it would be a struggle to get in and out. I’m only 5’4” (this is the regular version I’m reviewing, not tall). It is slippery, which might be fine if you don’t move at night but I reposition often and felt like this would be a problem on any surface that wasn’t perfectly level. I tried it on my bed and felt like I was sliding off all night. The construction is confusing. The zipper doesn’t go down far enough on the inner bag so to get out you need to shimmy and wiggle your way up and out. I struggled to avoid snagging the zipper in the dark, but careful use in the light was fine. The reason it doesn’t get one star it is lightweight and retains heat well. I can’t imagine getting any sleep in this in a tent. I’m considering returning this.

Terrible,ridiculous design, impossible to function

First off, it took weeks for delivery--probably due to shipping from China. This is the worse product I have ever seen from REI. It is very small and tight. The zipper sucks, it snags on every motion, small grabs. The hood is almost impossible to get on, the entry is very small and there is no way to open it up. The outer bag is held on with a confusing tangle of laces that continue to tangle into a confusing mess when in the bag and attempting to open or close it over the main bag. We never did get both bags set up and functioning and that was in the living room with lots of room--can't imagine trying to do than in a tent. Absolutely a worthless mess. I am sorry I have to pay $7 to return this to REI. Not sure I will ever trust REI again. SO disappointed and disgusted. Do NOT buy this.

Okay bag, not great for chilly nights

Bought this bag with similar idea to one of the other reviews - that I could use it together for chilly weather (15-25F), dark blue for warmer weather (50F & up), lt blue for cooler (30-50F). First time I took it out backpacking, brought the whole thing just to test. I am not a cold sleeper and our temps were in the low-mid 40s & it was comfortable - both bags, which surprised me. Thought I was going to have to use one or the other. Both were fine. I am a side + tosser .... and I also slipped around in the bag. I never fell off the pad, but moved a lot. Had to use my headlamp to get back in one night after a bathroom break. Came home and tried the light blue bag at home in the winter - 33F, and I was too cold - with mid level top + bottom + socks. Dark blue outer bag was fine for a camping trip. A little disappointed in the lack of warmth. Also had to buy the long version to fit into the inner bag. I'm 5'7 .. but the inner bag was not terribly tight (I usually hate mummy bags this was fine). Overall, this is fine.... not my favorite bag, bought on sale so was worth the price. But doesn't work for most of my backpacking trips as the temps can dip into the teens and I would not trust this combo to keep me cozy enough to sleep. Will be using for camping with warmer nights.
