We have a couple of Torchlight expanding bags in our family now, which is super fun to say, since our kids now span two generations of this bag design. The first one we got had synthetic insulation, which has been plenty warm for the times we've gone camping from spring to fall, but it's not quite as light or packable as down, so its nice to see the new version offered in a lighter package. Recently, we picked this one up for our oldest (5) for a backpacking trip in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and passed the earlier version down to his little brother. I'm pumped on the switch to down fill in this bag because it's incredibly packable and lightweight, meaning our kiddo was actually able to carry it on his own for his first backcountry overnighter. The expanding side zips + ability to grow or shrink the foot box so your kiddo can grow with the bag from an early age, makes this such a great long-term investment. The pad sleeve works really well to keep them on their pad through the night, and the build of this bag is exactly like a high end adult bag, making it such a cool piece of kids gear that simply pulls on my gear nerd heart strings. If you're looking to star em' young, this is THE bag for your fast-growing, adventurous kid.
We used three of these on a four-day family trip into the Boundary Waters with our young daughters, and they've honestly exceeded our expectations. One of my favorite features is that they grow with your child. Knowing we won't have to replace them every couple of years makes the investment feel well worth it. The adjustable length and expandable side panels are such a smart design, and the kids stayed warm and comfortable every night. As parents, getting a good night's sleep starts with making sure your littles do too, and these bags gave us so much confidence. The quality is exactly what we've come to expect from Big Agnes, and I can already tell these will be part of our family camping for years to come (which is not often something that holds true for kids gear :)). Highly recommend for any family introducing kids to camping or backpacking!
I’m slowly upgrading my daughter’s gear to support backpacking with me. This seemed like a good option since it is designed to grow and in theory be more useful. But there are so many zippers that really don’t do much. If your kid suddenly gains a foot in height and a hundred pounds I could see where expanding the size of the bag would make sense. But, and it’s a big but, there is no obvious zipper to fully open the bag making it unusable unless it’s cool enough to be inside. We’ll give it another try or two before giving up.
My son loves this bag, and I love that it's adjustable in length to last him a long time. Dead space in the sleeping bag is the enemy of warmth, and this bag with the adjustable toe box deals with your growing child wonderfully. My son was toasty all night in about 35-degree nights. The feature to slip in a sleeping mat is perfect for my wild little sleep. Great buy, and it will last him for years.
HIgh end sleeping bag that appears like it will last. Pleased so far. Great feature to secure the sleeping pad too!
