- Unlike other duffels, the asymmetric shape of the Radical is designed to be comfortably carried on your back
- When you carry it on your back, it is narrower at the hips and larger at the shoulders, so contents do not slouch to the bottom or hang below the waistbelt
- Padded backpad ensures contents don't create pressure points
- Shoulder straps are padded and contoured for maximum comfort
- Shoulder straps can be tucked away for convenience or removed completely; or you can remove just one shoulder strap and position the other diagonally for a crossbody carry
- Sternum strap keeps the load centered and balanced
- Removable webbing waistbelt helps to stabilize heavy loads
- Providing a high degree of security while on the move, the main access to the duffel is through a large zipper positioned against your back when you carry it like a pack
- 2 outer pockets—1 includes a key fob and internal zipper access to main compartment; the other is lined with water-repellent fabric to contain wet garments
- Body fabric is reinforced with EVA foam padding throughout, providing structure for ease of packing and protection of contents
- Top and bottom fabric is made of incredibly durable PVC-free, recycled 600-denier polyester
- Secondary fabric is 210-denier Robic HD ripstop nylon carbonate that's PVC-free and OEKO-TEX®100 certified
- Both outer fabrics are polyurethane-coated for weather protection, and made to withstand daily use, travel and the abuses of adventure
- Compression strap at each end aids in load control; when you wear the Radical as a pack, the upper strap can be used to attach a jacket or rope to the top
- Sturdy haul loops at ends help you lift a fully loaded bag
- 3 internal gear loops allow stuff sacks and other gear to be secured with a carabiner (carabiner not included)
- Glow-in-the-dark zipper pulls
- This item is slightly over carry-on size restrictions for most airlines (size not to exceed 45 linear inches when adding L+W+H), so check with your airline before carry-on use

Just a jumbled mess...
I really wanted to like this bag. I was excited about the versatile straps and they work as intended. I just wish the bag lined up better with its described use- for travel or for the mobile workspace. This bag is lacking 1 or 2 small pockets for items you need quickly like a passport or snack. There are definitely places for more pockets at the top and/or bottom of the pack. I would never put a laptop in here...it would slide everywhere and a little padding won't prevent damage. I packed this bag for myself and 2 toddlers on a river day. It wasn't full so it would easily collapse when I wanted to walk further- I absolutely had to cinch the compression straps or it wouldn't sit right on my back. I'm 5'5" with an average torso. The large side pouches held a lot but that was another problem- I had to dig through everything to find small items because there is no additional separation. From product pictures, it looks like one side pocket is supposed to have netted pouches but that is not how my pack arrived out of the box. I shouldn't have to buy a bunch of stuff sacks in order to use bag this for a day trip. My final qualm with this bag is the lack of external water bottle pouch or hydration sleeve. All of the zippers go against your back in backpack mode so you have to take it off if you want anything, including water. Exped could do a lot more with this bag to truly make it versatile for any use.
Mediocre backpack, decent duffel.
Since getting it, I used this bag for a couple short outings, as a gym bag, and a three day business trip and it fits three days worth of clothes and a little bit of tech no problem. I brought my laptop (in a separate case within the bag), charger, phone charger, and noise cancelling headphones, water bottle, and hygiene kit no problem. (I typically pack minimalistic though) Some notes: -There are only three pockets so it is very simple by design. The side pocket with access to the main pouch was handy when I wanted to grab something at the bottom of the bag because I could access it through the side pocket without taking everything else out first. The side pocket with pocket main access also has a clip on a leash which I think is handy for car keys. Seems like there could be more pockets on the top and bottom of the bag. -I tried it as a backpack but prefer the bag as a duffel because it isn't breathable so my back ended up sweating (I sweat a lot), also the straps felt a little bit wide at the top of my shoulders for me. No frame means it isn't very comfortable on the back either. -It works great as a gym bag - not too bulky, easily fits a change of clothes, shoes, water bottle, keys, wallet, etc. -This bag has no frame so it takes the shape of whatever you put in it (if you have it on as a backpack and have something big and lumpy in it, you will feel it in your back) -I measured it out and it measures about 10" x 7" x 22" so I think it would work great as a carry on bag for air travel -The material feels very durable, the zippers are sturdy and the stitching feels solid on the handles/straps -It took me about 15 minutes to figure out how to convert back and forth from duffel to backpack (I had to watch a video multiple times). It seems like the system was designed to be simple but requires an extra component to be switched out during the conversion process which I feel is a bit unnecessary. -If you are going to wear it as a backpack, the main compartment zipper is up against your back so it would be difficult for someone to sneak up and get into your bag while you are wearing it - on the flip side, you have to take it off to get into it which can be annoying -There is padding on this bag but not very much. If you are packing a computer or other breakable electronics then make sure they have their own padded case - no frame in this bag means it bends easy if it isn't completely full and the padding isn't enough to protect your electronics if you aren't careful. A dedicated laptop pocket inside would be nice. Is this bag waterproof? -I had it in heavy rain (Pacific Northwesterner here) for about a half hour and it leaked on one side of the top stitching into the main pouch. The leak was minor so everything inside was mostly dry. I was using it as a backpack though which I think it helps keep water out because the zipper is against your back. I would recommend a dry bag if you are going to be out in the elements all day or longer and need to keep your things absolutely dry. TLDR - This is a very simple bag and seems durable. Seems like there could be more pockets for smaller things for organization, but this works. Works best for me as a duffel. The hybrid system for conversion from backpack to duffel seems cool at first but in reality is inconvenient and unnecessary. This bag works OK as a backpack or duffel but in my opinion - want a backpack? get a backpack. want a duffel bag? get a duffel bag. This bag is a little expensive to underperform in both categories.
Not Female Torso Friendly, made for long torso
I'm an Exped fan. I love their downmat sleeping pad. I wanted to continue to support more of their products. I tried on the Exped 45 pack and the top of the bag pushed my head forward (just like a tall backpack) and the sternum strap was in the wrong place just above the nipple line. Darn! I have a long torso for a woman so I doubt any women would be able to use this bag. Take notes Exped! When you fix these two issues, I'm HAPPY to buy this bag. I really like the design concept otherwise. Note, that I did not put weight into the bag, I'm not sure how strong it would be given that both straps can be removed.
Durable Bag that lacks functional features
I took this bag on two trips - one a super rainy camping trip and one weekend away. The good: the outer shell is well made and keeps water out. Seems like it won't get snagged and tear easily. The bad: the main compartment feels like it should hold more stuff before you have to start cramming stuff in. The two pockets aren't very functional. One has dual access from the inside and the outside but it doesn't expand much so not much fits in there. The pocket that's on the outside suffers the same problem. The straps are kind of funky - if you don't want to wear it as a backpack then you store the straps but where? In the pockets that are too small to begin with? The straps just seem like they are in the way.
MUST HAVE
I just received this bag and took it with me on a hike to Acatanago in Guatemala. Let me tell you - Well worth it! Super comfortable, straps didn't hurt my shoulders at all. It is carry on sized...easy to travel with. I love that it can go from duffle to backpack. During my hike, my back felt supported. It rained during my hike, not one item got wet inside (it is truly water proof). There were quite a few compartments where I can separate my food, from my clothes, from my tools. I loved that it has hooks in the bag that I can hang my keys and other items with. If you are a hiker - this is a must have. If you are a light traveler and live by the carry on only life...this bag is a must have. Either way...this bag is a must have!
Mostly recommended
I really like this backpack. Unfortunately the one flaw drawback was the shoulder strap system. The small loop that holds the top of the strap was a little too big and the tee hook kept popping out. A safety pin provided a temporary fix, but will definitely try to have it replaced. This only happened on the one side which makes me think it was simply an oversight in manufacturing. I like all the other features of the backpack. It expands easily, can be adjusted to be carried in a few different styles and the fact that the zipper is against your back is an added protection against things falling out. There is plenty of room to accommodate everything for a long weekend (4-5 days). I spend well over 130 night on the road a year, and while this isn’t my primary piece of luggage, there is ample room to accommodate much longer travel should you find it necessary. With the exception of the one small flaw I really liked it.
Lots of room
This bag is large and can hold quite a bit. However it is basically just one large bag and I’d prefer more organization pockets. Depending on the configuration it is too large for a petit person to carry comfortably. It’s also pretty confusing to convert, there are A LOT of straps and such. But I like the versatility of it and it seems well made.
Great bag that holds way more than you’d think!
This is a great bag, perfect for weekends or a carryon. I love the compression aspect, it allows you to fit way more than you would think, and because it’s compressed down, nothing shifts around! The side pockets are a great touch as well to pack items you need easy access to.
Pretty good features for a backpack/duffle combo
Pros: Definitely feels like a 45L bag, seems roomier than my Patagonia Blackhole 45L. Love the long zipper up the middle for easy packing/access and when worn as a backpack it's against your back for more security. Side pockets are ample and one connects to the inside of the bag. Its super lightweight, I was surprised when I first held it. Lower profile than the Blackhole, its longer to compensate, but it is flatter to your body. I like that it was designed to still look nice when worn as a backpack, instead of just showing the bottom of the bag. Cons: Doesn't hold shape too well unless its fully stuffed, I found it creased and folded at the bottom when not completely full. Chest strap is a touch low, sort of squishing my chest in an awkward way, even on its highest setting for me. I do understand I am petite (5'3"), but one more loop for the chest strap would have been nice. My husband does not have this problem. Could do with one more internal pocket to keep smaller stuff organized, which could have easily been added above the loops on the inside. Neither here nor there/if it matters to you: The 45L SAYS it's technically too big to be a carry on, but only by a few inches. I'm going to give it a try as a carry on when I fly next and perhaps not pack it to the point where it can't be squished to fit.
