REI Co-op  Big Haul 30" Wheeled Duffel

The wheeled Big Haul is the perfect rolling duffel. I got this just before an MTB trip to Durango Colorado so it was a good opportunity to really test it out. I was purposely kind of hard on it to see how it would do. I used a bunch of REI packing cubes to keep everything organized, and I was able to fit enough clothes and gear for a week of adventure. The quality of the bag is beyond anything I’ve used before. Many rolling duffels are simply a duffel bag with some wheels and a bit of reinforcement. Not this one. This one is practically overbuilt for adventure. The bottom is rigid and has a strong tub like base. The Cordura material on the base could withstand just about any kind of abuse you’d throw out it. The wheels are the smoothest rolling wheels I’ve ever experienced on any piece of luggage. They are not just smooth, but very robust and seem like they’d be quite impervious to dirt grit and grime when camping. My mini cheap rolling doubles have a little metal bar that extends to hold the devil when you stand it upright. In my experience must fail, or just too weak, and the whole duffel flops over when you try to stand it on its end. This one has a very robust and solid support bar. It doesn’t get in the way when you’re transporting a rolling it at all. And it confidently holds the bag in the upright position, even with a heavy load. The fabric material is very durable and sturdy. Big handles in the right spots make it easy to pick up, even with a heavy load. Zippers are very strong and easy to pull. There’s a nice small zipper pocket at the top, near the handle. Seems like the perfect size and spot for a wallet and passport while traveling. The strip of loop webbing running around the sides make it easy to attach accessories if needed. Overall, the bag is pretty much perfect. It’s by far the nicest rolling double I’ve ever seen or used. I’m not a big fan of the color choices, but it’s fine and makes it easy to find your bag if you check it at the airport. And if you do choose to check it in, it’s definitely durable enough to withstand the rigs of airport ground and luggage screws. The top is obviously soft and it has tiedown straps to cinch it down and keep everything as compact as possible. We do a lot of off-road camping trips. I have no concerns about subjecting this bag to the abuse of rugged environments. We’ve actually been using REI Big Haul duffels for several years now on all our camping trips and other travel. They hold up exceptionally well. But this is the first rolling Big Haul I’ve used. I’m confident it will become our favorite piece of gear. As always, REI branded gear serves as evidence that REI products are designed and tested by people who actually use them for their intended purposes. This REI Big Haul 30” Wheeled Duffel is the absolute best and most versatile luggage you can own. We have taken this duffel on numerous cross country (2500+ mile) road trips and air travel as checked luggage. The duffel allows some creative packing and over packing to work. There are two cinch point internally and four points externally to really compress your load without compromising the contents. Two external pockets (with a key leash) provide quick access to essentials and two internal pockets allow for quick access to accessories. Additional storage is available in the lid-another two zipper pockets. This duffel provides more storage than my hard sided 30” suitcase. The outside of the duffel will surprise you with its strength and durability. It is made with rugged, DWR ripstop nylon on the main compartment with ballistic nylon ends. Thought has been integrated into the wheels and rolling design. We have rolled this duffle over, roadways, rocks, cobblestones, dirt, mud, snow and puddles while on trips without issue. The heavy-duty oversize wheels are incorporated into a very sturdy chassis. The substantial handle extends and retracts easily and resides inside aluminum tubing within a molded plastic tub, making the back of the duffle rigid for stability. There are sturdy web haul handles (including daisy chain lash points for gear) on the front, sides and top end as well as a metal structural bar at the bottom for easy handling. Dragging luggage out of the back of a car or off the luggage carrousel at an airport frustrates most of us. This duffel has made those tasks much easier. We have tested this duffle to what would be the limit for other bags and it has survived intact and looking great. I highly recommend it for all travel.

When I first received the bag I already knew exactly what I was going to use it for. Working as a firefighter here in California, we can be called upon to help out with wildfires at a moments notice. We must pack bags with all our gear and clothes to sustain ourselves for up to 21 days at time. I needed something durable, dust proof and easy to carry. This bag hits all those check marks and then some. The materials seem tough, and believe me us firefighter can really put a stress test on some gear and this bag held up. It has plenty of space, the wheels roll smoothly across all surfaces including dirt paths, and with the different placed handles makes it a breeze to move around. I could not be happier with the performance of this product.

This is my second large rolling duffle from REI, and is even more useful than the first. First impression is that the fabric is sleeker and more waterproof than previous models. It offers a very high-end feel with smooth, thick nylon. I'm more likely to carry my bags than roll them, so I love having these handles accessible on all sides. And they're thick, well-made handles, too. The two external pockets are sized for a cell phone or a small paperback but not a tablet. I just managed to fit my toiletry kit in the larger one. There's some inner organization on the lid which was useful for gym clothes since I didn't bring a dedicated packing cube for them. The molded pan which provides the back structure seems particularly robust. Though this first trip was a road trip, I can assume that the next time this duffle goes through airport baggage systems it will survive very nicely.

Perfect large duffel bag with smooth zippers and solid construction. Definitely too big for a carry on but great as a checked bag or for a road trip, ski bag, hockey bag, etc. Only a few pockets but I appreciate the simplicity in the massive center compartment. The color definitely pops.

So far so good! The wheels roll better than my Travel Pro… so far… I found the 90L Big Hail without wheels can be “too much” to carry longer distances (2 week of clothes are roughly 65lbs for me) and this is insanely convenient. It fits better in the small closets in hotels. I am able to fit 2 weeks of clothing in it and it has been sturdy and durable… so far… the zippers are quality material, same as the 40L and 90L bags. It’s worth every penny!

I purchased this roughly 3 weeks ago. I wanted a duffel with wheels (I know it kind of defeats the purpose) It is made of the same quality material and stitching as the 40L and 60L I have… but is easier move around the airports with. The wheels roll smooth… so far… the zippers and straps keep everything tight and it is compact to store in a hotel closet (sometimes they can be small) I am able to fit 2 weeks of clothes comfortably.
