Powerful and Versatile
Great lantern for use in a wide range of situations! The light is very bright, it's very easy to hang it up and it stays put, thanks to the lanyard. The powerbank functionality comes very handy when you're away from charging sources. I found it much easier to control the light from the app rather than the lantern itself. Turning it on/off works fine on the lantern, but changing light color and brightness is difficult, so the app is much better for that - that's one thing that can be improved. Also, it would be great to have a storage bag for the lantern and the charging cord, so it's easier to transport and keep everything together. But overall, I'm impressed with this gadget and will definitely use it a lot for camping and at home!
Great power bank
I really like how much of a charge this power bank holds. My iPhone got 3 charges out of it! That being said, I found that when I would charge my phone with it, it wouldn’t always charge right away to 100%. It would go to 50 or 60% and, after unplugging and replugging it would finish the charge. The light has good dimming/brightening capabilities. It can get VERY bright. If I wanted to light a room, camper, or tent it would be great. Hanging it from above seems best because otherwise it’s brightly shining up into your face. The hanging mechanism is easy to use. The color changing feature is also easy to use-if that’s your thing. Maybe I’m a little too old and stuffy to enjoy this feature. ;) I like the little blue lights that let me know how much of a charge the power bank has remaining. Be sure to have an adapter if you want to recharge it into a wall outlet.
Great light, awesome battery life
Got this in time for an 8 day van camping trip in Utah - only had to charge it once after several night hikes, using it as a cooking light, and using the color features for a night light. Oh yeah and used it to charge my phone a couple times. A bit heavy but only because it’s solidly made. The cord makes it pretty easy to attach to things, but wish there was a way to cinch the cord to keep it in position when wrapped around an object. Also a threaded hole that would fit a tripod mount would be awesome and super convenient to use this as a lamp...just go ahead and buy it.
A bright, durable light with some quirks
First off, the good: This light is super bright and quite durable. The multicolor option is good too if you need a light that doesn't wash out your night vision or if you want some fun festive colors. The app is basic and allows you to turn the light on or off, switch modes and colors, but the color on the app isn't accurate to what the light produces. The app is handy if you place the lamp in a high or hard-to-reach area and want to turn it off without getting up or out of your sleeping bag. As a power bank, it charges my phone extremely fast when using the USB-c port. Now for the bad: this lamp seems to have endless battery power as the battery indicator never showed a decrease in capacity while running the light. The lamp is quirky as it stops functioning as intended when the battery reaches a certain level. Whenever the battery starts to run down the lamp loses functionality to control it from the button on the lamp. It is still controllable from the app but this requires you to have a phone, and a Bluetooth connection at all times otherwise you can't turn the lamp off and have to wait until the battery completely dies, or recharge the lamp to the point where the functionality of the buttons resumes. It's a bit disappointing because this lamp has great potential but the issues with it would prevent me from bringing it on a trip as my main source of light. My hopes are that this is just a firmware issue that can be fixed with an update from the manufacturer.
BEST LANTERN (but plz add a party mode)
the cairn xl is a beast! i purchased it 2017(18?) and it has survived countless bikepacking trips where it not only served as my camp light but a bike light (with a custom mount) as well. its seen all kinds of weather conditions and never once failed me. i operate a train in a dirty and dark environment and its my go to light for inside of the cab and it keeps my phone charged during my 16 hr shifts! as i move toward usb c for all camping / bikepacking / life needs my cairn xl micro usb has been retired for home use. if anyone from lander reads this could you please add a party mode? i have several other much cheaper camping lanterns with this feature and it’s pretty fun around a campsite. the other request is a magnet in the base. i’ve modded mine and the magnets are a game changer. in the meantime saving up for the usb c version :)
Hey! Thank you so much for your awesome review! We'll be sure to pass your feedback along to our team. Happy to hear you're loving it!
Have to return my second one
Bought this for a month long camping road trip last year and thought it was great. Then two nights in a row it would stay turned on and the power button would not work. Had to shove it somewhere and let the battery completely drain and then recharge the next day with a mobile battery because I wasn't near an outlet anywhere but needed light at my campsite. I ended up exchanging it for the same model once I returned from my trip because I love that it is USB-C and having everything I bring use one cord is a great convenience. Figured it was a glitch and exchanging it would be fine. Just took it out on another trip and the exact same thing happened. I will be returning the second one and just going with a different model because it happening with two of them doesn't give me a lot of faith that a third will be better. The light output is great and I love the USB-C and power bank features but it staying stuck on definitely caused issues and made some nights more difficult which is the opposite of what you want from your camping gear.
App discontinued
The app to support this lantern has been discontinued, dramatically reducing its functionality. If, for some reason, you want to pay $100 for a glowing RGB brick, it's otherwise robustly built and should serve you well. Calling it a "smart" lantern now though is absolutely laughable
No smart for its own good
Lantern required firmware update upon arrival. Update failed, light no longer worked and lantern is now bricked. Heavy as well. Lucky REI stands by what they sell and customer service is amazing. Landers customer support is lacking to say the least
Neat tool for basecamp
Overall this is a solid light. The multiple color options are great. Using the app is simple and makes the light much more functional. The buttons are not the easiest to operate or remember as multiple responses occur for the same button (meaning that two clicks makes the light do one thing while a click and hold causes a different response, etc.). I would have prefered dedicated buttons for ease of use. The light can be very bright and the option to dim is great. Having the light respond in brightness to the distance from your phone is really a great idea. The light is heavy and would not be great for a backpacking trip. The cord works fine but could have had better ways to secure, lengthen, etc. to make it more customizable. I found that walking holding the light in my hand with the cord wrapped around was comfortable.
Great Combo of Lantern and Power Bank. + Colors!
The Cairn XL Lantern is everything that you would want in a lantern and more. Due to the design it has more than enough features. It gives you the basic lantern use with options for colors. I found this useful to set to Red to help maintain night vision. It is very simple to change the color using the Lander App along with manual cycle of color by pressing and holding the button. Read the instructions for how to use the single button to change modes, brightness, or colors as it wasn't super intuitive, but after reading through it was simple to use and understand. The Carin XL lantern is slightly heaving for backpacking use, but once you realize how much power is pack into this device I found it worthwhile to carry. It was able to charge my phone multiple times along with a very long run time. Setting up the Lander App was easy and allowed for some cool features. I didn't really use the app a lot as I am not typically on my phone when outdoors. There are a couple proximity features that I didn't try, but seem like too much tech for a lantern and carrying your phone. The other item that I found a little bit of a hinderance was the length of cord provided to attach the lantern around camp. You have to find a small branch or use additional cord to attach to anything of substance. I used additional cord/strap to get it situated where I wanted around camp. Overall I am very pleased with this little but feature packed lantern. If you are looking for gear that serves multiple purposes this will serve as your main lantern around the tent/table along with battery pack for charging your devices without any concerns for weekend or extended weekend trips. It even has some cool features that you can awe your friends and make them jealous :)
