Ignore other lanterns, this is it.
After seeing someone with one of these at our picnic table I knew I wanted one, but I thought I could buy something better and there were options that held up to 3x as much charge and were twice as bright. -- Well guess what, after actually trying some out, I realized all those lanterns are made by people who have not used lanterns at campsites, because lanterns that throw their light upward will blind you at a picnic table as much as in your tent, unless they're placed above you. Except this lantern, which has all of its light directed downward and outward, to light the actual surfaces you need to see and to specifically not blind you if its places beneath your line of vision.
Nice light all around including the bottom
Most of the battery-operated lanterns have a dead spot at the bottom where the light does not reach leaving behind a big shadow. Most of these lanterns have the light unit on top and the control at the bottom. As you can see with this light it is the reverse such that it cats a nice soft light on the ground without much shadow. I don't care that much about the ability to charge my phone, for which I already have a portable battery bank. Nowadays there are so many things can charge my phone, I wish they can focus on the main feature, which is to send out light, better or reduce the price and weight and make it more weather proof.
Super durable, but not that bright
This thing took a beating on a recent camping trip - it got dropped multiple times, kicked around, etc., and still looks brand new and functions perfectly. The loop on top is also really nice for hanging this inside your tent at night. The two downsides are that it doesn't cast it's light very widely - I found that it really only lit a small (couple of feet) area around it. Also, the dimmer switch is not that easy to use. Would recommend if only trying to light a small area or if looking for a super durable light source for in your tent.
Versatile little lantern
Did a great deal of research before settling on this portable little lamp. While there were some more powerful options, I decided on this one due to the dimming feature and the ability to operate via the internal rechargeable battery or regular batteries. In addition, you can charge your phone or speaker via the USB port. Also, love how small it is so it won’t take too much room in pack but packs a lot of light. Metal loops on top of the lantern would facilitate hanging inside tent. Overall quite happy.
Well designed product
I think BD nailed this one. I would need to use this lantern longer to know for sure, but out of the gate, I love it. Plenty of light, stable on the legs, the split ring on the top that allows for hanging is well thought out, control switch easy and intuitive. Sturdy construction. Battery consumption is low. I have no reason to not love this product. A bit heavy/bulky for the average backpacking trip, I suppose, but I only use it for car camping and fishing trips and would certainly recommend it for this type of use.
Perfect fit in my camping 'program'
Think headlamp/lantern/phone charger/ GPS. Headlamp optimal battery power must be at the top of the wilderness list ...nights require hours of available power (and going dark during an emergency leaves a bitter lesson). Ni-Cad batteries in the wilderness, duh. Go alkaline (or lithium to avoid leakage). Build your program around ONE battery size. AAA don't have the punch and C/D are too heavy. We go AA and this lantern is the perfect ‘end-use’ as we rotate fresh batteries into headlamps etc. It does not have the power to charge a phone but for about $15 you can get a 4@AA phone charger that will get an I-phone up to about 60%. Using the discards we leave the lantern on all-night low-light a couple nights.
This light does things most lights cannot
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this light and I bought it because it’s extremely unique in that it has a built in battery that can be charged via the wall, and it also takes AA batteries. I got this for a few purposes. First, for general campaign use…and it’s great for that. Puts out a nice 360 light that’s fairly soft for its size and it the hook on top and the tripod legs on bottom are quite useful for a variety of purposes. The second use I got this for was household emergencies such as power outages. I always carry extra AA batteries in the house for emergencies so I wanted a light that could function off an internal battery or AA batteries. Even better, this light can charge your phone which means you can convert AA batteries into phone charge. That’s something that’s hard to find in other products. The price is bit steep for this but it’s a really high quality product and it’s lasted for years so I’m overall quite happy with my purchase.
Worked for a short period of time
We used this twice and now it won't turn on or charge. We've tried both the USB charge and batteries, and neither works. Unfortunately we're just past the return date now.
Phone charging does not work
Its bright enough for a lamp, if a bit heavy for the brightness. HOWEVER, the phone charging cuts out every 3 seconds then restarts. This means your phone cannot charge faster than it loses battery not to mention the screen turning on everytime the disconnect reconnect happens. If not for this one broken feature it would be a nice AA based phone charger that happens to have a light, but as is it has no place in my kit.
Does not last
Used it a handful of times with AA batteries. All of a sudden it died and won’t turn back on. Tried everything in the book; new batteries, press and hold button, etc etc. The unit looks and it is basically new. No corrosion inside etc. Always stored in my gear box. Return window has now passed. Disppointed.
