Very nice lightweight shelter
I was able to set this shelter up by myself. Just be sure to lay everything out, and go slow when inserting the poles into the grommets at the base, being mindful of how they are are laying both in the fabric channels and across the shelter fabric. It is a tight fit so you want to be sure to allow for maximum fabric stretch. Looks like it will be super sturdy and will provide adequate shelter from rain wind and sun. REI doesn’t carry the side panels but I was able to buy them online. You will definitely want these! They attach quickly to the side walls using toggles, and will keep the rain off when it’s not coming straight down. You can put them across a door side, but they don’t fit as tight, and there will be a triangular gap at the top.
Great Canopy!
REI members, I am a little disappointed by my fellow coop members unfounded reviews of this shelter. 1 Star because REI canceled the order? 1 star because you thought it came with a sidewall? Those reviews have nothing to do with the functionality and utility of the shelter. Here is the skinny - this is a lightweight shelter that is quick to setup and highly functional. I lugged around my enormous, heavyweight tail-gate style canopy for far too long. The three forks shelter is a breeze to pitch and packs down very small and light. It is a must have for car camping. We toss wet towels, shoes, swim suits, and you name it on top of the shelter to dry with no issues.
Big Angus doesn't stand by their product labels
I purchased this shelter with no exception to receive the additional wall panel, but when I got it, the tag stated "Shelter purchase includes body, removable wall panel, poles, stuff sack, and stakes." I opened it up and there was no panel. I called the company because the tag says that the wall panel was included with the purchase, but they refused to help me. I just got a "tough luck for you. It was a typo." Very disappointing. I generally think of gear companies as stand-up businesses, but not so with Big Angus.
So far so good - will get a lot of use out of this
I put this shelter up in my back yard four weeks ago to shake out my gear before a big car camping trip into the desert. I purchased this shelter due to the promise of it holding up in wind. It has been up for four weeks straight, during which it experienced three different wind storms. I did put the shelter up by myself, but it would have been better with two people. I bent a pole a wee bit in the process since it was windy, and this thing is a kite. Get someone to help. Also, I put it up in a rocky area, and already put a small hole in it from it dragging on rocks. (again, two people) Fortunately, I always have tent tape. The height is very comfortable for me - no stooping at 5'3", which was one of my big requirements. In fact, I have a few inches of clearance under the door, and more once I get under it. The 10x10 size is perfect for a solitary camper, such as myself, to get all my gear under. (Cot, card table, chair, and kitchen) The shade was nice - you could definitely feel temperature differences. Please note my personal upgrades: 1. I doubled the number of guy lines and employed a star shaped tie down pattern to help with wind. In my opinion, the standard 4 would not have stood up to the wind without some pole damage. However, with 8, it performed like a champ. 2. I never use standard tent pegs. I use 12" lag screws driven into the ground with an impact driver. I use lag screws and washers for all four corners and the tie downs. 3. I purchased 4 extra walls. While the description says you can only attach two walls to the sides, I was able to attach all four walls. (Even though I will likely not use them all at the same time in the future. This was just a gear test) I would like to see a future iteration that understands that the brutal sun is mostly coming from south and west, and adjust the wall layout accordingly. This is my second Big Agnes tent, and I purchased this due to the success of my first product.
Not as durable as expected.
The good news is this canopy is lightweight. However, I am unable to get the short central pole in at all on my own. I also need someone else to stand in the middle as I put the ends of the poles in the straps. But the biggest negative is one of the poles bent in the wind on the first time I used it. I’m thinking I will return this if I’m able. PS. I knew in advance I’d need to buy the extra panels from someone else. Now I have two panels from another vendor making full returns difficult.
Amazing performance in high winds
We purchased this over a year ago and it has been a strong performer. Last weekend we were camping at the mouth of Chute Canyon and were hit by strong winds. The Three Forks Shelter took it all in stride, we were amazed. Look at the photo, it just bounced back after several gusts.
Solid good-sized shelter
I just received this shelter and set it up in the park to check it out. This is the 2018 version of the shelter. It does not include a sidewall but they are available. You can have up to 2 sidewalls, one on each side. Sidewalls don't fit on the front or back, as best I can tell. Set-up was easy for one person. Directions are sewn into the carrying bag but really aren't needed. There is about 6 feet of headroom to enter the shelter in the front and back. Sides are 5 feet or so. The straps on the bottom are fixed on the sides. The straps on the front and back have to be connected and could be left loose if desired. Pegs are generic but work fine. The shelter material seems adequate and should wear well. I pegged down all 4 corners and all the guylines. There was a moderate breeze and the shelter held up fine. It will be interesting to see how it stands up in a heavy wind given comments for the previous version of the shelter. No rain so no comments on waterproofness. The carrying case works great. I put the poles in the pole bag, pegs in the peg bag, and both into the carrying case. I then stuffed the shelter into the case and it all fit.
NO SIDE WALL INCLUDED ANYMORE
Note that the side wall in the photo does not come with the shelter. Even the package label lists a wall panel. I had to buy one from Moosejaw as REI does not carry the removable wall panel.
Great fro the lake!
I got this for car camping and day trips. It works great. Very sturdy. To Clarify on "Collapses in Wind" First use was in high wind which was challenging to set up and secure but it didn't fly away. Looking forward to lots of use.
No side wall
The side wall is not included with this shelter. It is still a decent shade structure and we'll use it, but it's disappointing that the photos are inaccurate and the Q&A info also had wrong information.
