Great on Subaru outback 2021
I hesitated before purchasing this product from the REI outlet. I wasn't sure what the difference was between the same awning from REI and REI outlet and no one has reviewed it. I haven't seen a real product from REI in line which is a $100 higher price compared to this outlet product. For sure, there should be differences between these which I guess used cheaper materials on this product to lower the cost. However, I got my Yakima sky box with this awning at the same time for my Subaru outback 2021. It was a little tight on the factory roof lack for install both of them. But it almost fits perfectly on my car and I love it. I went to BLM land as soon as I installed it. It was strong enough to withstand strong desert gust winds.
Complements the Forester Nicely!
As someone else also posted, I was a little hesitant to purchase this awning without any reviews. I'm sure glad I did get this though. It provides great shady, easy to set up and tear down, and super compact! Finally got to use it this weekend while paddle boarding. I did purchase the Yakima L-shaped t-slot brackets for this, as the clamp style that comes with took up too much bar space.
Broke the first time I used it
I set this up on my truck last year, proceeded to show my friend my new awning and the brackets completely snapped and the main metal frame warped in very minimal wind. I reached out to Yakima as well and heard nothing. Super disappointed
Poor quality twist lock poles
Standard type of awning that is a great size for a smaller vehicle. The good - this awning has the best mounting brackets I've seen to quickly take it on and off roof cross bars. The bad - this awning has a terrible twist lock mechanism for the support poles that extend our from the car. Both failed to lock after a year. Disappointed in this product. Buy just the mounting brackets if you can find them and use a different brand of awning.
Yakima Awning - A Five Star Product
Easy to install and very well designed. It took me about 5 minutes to put it up the first time, and even faster to put it away. Twisting to lock the poles is easy, and the whole awning is well constructed.
don't use in any kind of wind!
I wanted to love the SlimShady. I picked it up with our membership reward and got it at a decent price. I liked how easy it was to install and remove and that it included lock cores. On our first outing with it we were able to set it up quickly at the beach on a dreary day at the Oregon coast. I purchased sand auger stakes to secure the hold down ropes as the stakes that came with the SlimShady are useless in sand. Don't even think about setting this up without staking it down. About fifteen minutes after we had set it up the wind kicked up a bit but nothing I'd consider out of the ordinary. In seconds the SlimShady tore loose and was flapping wildly in the wind it flipped to the other side of the car and the horizontal support poles had buckled in half and broke where they hinge. The main aluminum extrusion that mounts to the car twisted like a soft pretzel. It was all we could do to get it back into the case without scratching the car or breaking a window. We thought our dog had run off in the commotion until we found him hiding under the car. So there you have it. Luckily no one got hurt and the car miraculously wasn't damaged but the slim shady may be headed for the trash if I can't bend it straight. replacement poles are available but are $42 each and the main extrusion can't be replaced. Think twice about the idea of attaching a giant sail to your vehicle. You may find yourself in what feels like a scene out of a sailing disaster film in seconds.
Broke first time out
Was excited about the awning. However first time out the plastic coupling in the poles fell out. Then second night out with in all properly staked and light snow the metal frame warped and bent. Reached out to Yakima before the warranty expired and heard nothing back.
Great awning
Fits great on my Outback. Doesn’t work with the roof basket I installed, but it’s not a Yakima basket. Easy to set up and take down, and with some ingenuity you can add side panels to expand the coverage. But as is it provides plenty of shade for a couple people.
Great product!
Love the tarp color and light weights. Pretty fair price with high quality product. Definitely recommend to everyone.
Nice!
Covers the entire side (door to door) of my Jeep Renegade. Quality material and super easy to set up
