Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.
Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:
Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.
Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.
Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

I had first model of Superior trail-running shoes and was sold. Now I own 3 different styles from Altra. I also have a couple of Merrill minimalist shoes. I can't run in shoes that have a 'hill to toe drop", any amount of drop makes my shins and knee hurt. It was long and painful trying to figure out what was the issues. Even though my foot width is between narrow to medium, I still like the toe box, when I run my toes can spread freely, prevents any injury due to compression. I do trail and beach running, hiking and walking in these shoes. Usually wear size 9-9.5 and these shoes 9.5 are perfect with a slight amount of extra room.
used these last week camping and hiking Inks Lake State park. They are so comfy and I can really appreciate the larger toe box as my feet swell after long periods of standing & walking. The traction and grip served well on the rocky terrain. Great investment and stylish look!
Took my girlfriend shoe shopping for her birthday because we like to go for walks and her feet always hurt. I told her do not look at the prices and pick the most comfortable shoes you can find. She found these shoes and they are awesome, as her feet do not hurt when we walk anymore and she now knows that picking the right shoe will make your life much more comfortable to walk through.
I run trails, hike, run around a busy ER and these are the shoes I feel the MOST comfortable in!! They’re light. Built to take a beating on downhill rocks!! I feel light and agile in these shoes and eveyday. They look great and the cushion is spot on!!! Great shoe
Love these shoes. I have a wide toe box thanks to arthritis and bone spurs.. I haven't had a comfortable shoe in years until I tried these on. I don't think I'll ever own anything else! Very comfortable, great traction and I feel supported throughout foot.
I purchaed these for hiking to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back, but at 61 was a little nervous since I was raised on full hiking boots. These shoes gave me back the balance and flexibilty that I thought I had lost a few years ago.
Looking for another pair due to same problem as prior poster. The heel has worn out on both shoes. Now rubs and causes blisters. Toe cracked on one shoe and nuns on bottom also worn out. I trail run/hike but am not a marathoner when it comes to distances. Less than one year old. Hopefully will hear back from altra...
After trying on practically every shoe REI had similar to the Altra Women's Superior 3.5, this was a winner, by far. Great for hiking the easier trails around the Olympic peninsula, and walking along the Olympic Discovery Trail.
These are truly one of the best and most comfortable pair of hiking/walking shoes I have ever had. A little hard to put on unless you open the laces really wide is the only slight downside. Great support, fit like a glove.
I’m still a bit torn on how I feel about the zero drop hype, but these are good shoes. I’ve been wearing them consistently since August on runs ranging from 1-6 miles about 3-4 times a week on treadmill, trail, and road. I remove the stone guard plastic thing when running on smoother ground to make the shoes a bit softer and that works fairly well until I can purchase a road pair. On trails they are great, and have held up well over the last 5 months. I usually wear an 8.5 but went up to a 9 for these and that has worked well.
