Sizing Notes

Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.

Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:

Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.

Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.

Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

IS THIS SHOE TRUE TO SIZE? The product Features above will provide a suggestion if Altra advises you to size up or down in this particular shoe. If no such note exists, please order your regular size.

I NEVER write reviews on products, generally because I think it's silly and self-indulgent... But I had to write one for these shoes. I bought these shoes as an infrequent runner, hoping to become more consistent. After trying them on, I knew they were a good fit. The front portion of the shoe is wider than most, and the shape of the sole encourages more of a spread in the metatarsals of the foot, and with a malleable form the shoe immediately gives you a clear sense of mobility within the foot.... My first run was the most effortless run I had ever had before. I fell into alignment, and the whole time I felt more like I was landing. Just an effortless launch from foot to foot... Running is now a leisurely activity that I do about five days a week. And they are obviously constructed for a more rugged terrain. I live in New York City though, so my terrain ranges from pavement to Central Park. And in both cases I am spending my time taking in my beautiful surroundings, for lack of discomfort. I can't vouch for the durability of the shoe, simply because I have only had them a month. But I can recommend these shoes with full confidence. Here's to trail running! Sizing!... I usually wear a 10 to 10.5 street shoe and I bought these in a 9.5! The width at the front gives you enough space to bring your shoe down a half size...

3 months and coming apart

I had these shoes for 3 months and about 200 trail miles. They were a great show and looked like a big improvement from the Superior 1.5 but they were not! I wear the 1.5's for everyday use and I am still wearing them a year later. I also have had a pair of Altra Lone Peak 2.0 and 2.5. Altra makes a very comfortable shoe and I love the zero drop and medium cushioning but they do have issues with the outer top material. Each version seemed to get a little better until this model. I had accepted that they would only last 6 months but I can not afford only 3 months. So I had to return them. I see the Lone Peak 3.0 is coming and it looks like it has extra material where these one ripped. I hope to try them as soon as they are out. I love Altra but they need to fix the durability issue; these are Trail Shoes!

Love these shoes!

I bought these shoes because I find that most running shoes squeeze my toes together enough to cause discomfort or even bleeding. These Altra 2.0 shoes were comfortable when I tried them on in the store and equally comfortable once I got out running that same week. Plenty of space in the toe box for your toes to relax and spread out. I also find the ZeroDrop preferable to the standard running shoe platform. I haven't yet been out on unpaved trails since its January and conditions aren't great in PA, but look forward to testing them out on some rugged terrain once conditions improve.

Like but the quality is not so good

Like this shoe, want to like everything about it, but like some other have said, they just do not hold up. I purchased these two weeks ago, went on 5 trail runs for a total of 25 miles in one week. On the 6th run, I noticed the toe of the sole is separating from the shoe. I would love to recommend them but the quality is just not there to hold up to teh trails.

Ran a 50k

Through a series of idiotic decisions, I found myself buying these shoes three days before my first trail 50k. The long and the short of it was that they functioned admirably, and I finished the race with no weird pains in my feet or legs. So, how bout that? The wide toe box might be a revelation.

Whole new way of walking/jogging

When I bought theses shoes, I was looking for comparable Keens, due to the shape of the (footbox?). I stand 13-15 hours a day and Keens are a brand that has a wide footbox that allows my feet to "relax" into the shoe. They feel like my feet are getting a massage just by standing and walking around, so naturaly, i was looking for their running/walking shoe. Their product was not the same as their other shoes, with a tight footbox much like any other running shoes...not acceptable. The salesman at the Redmond REI was very knowlegeable and helpfull, thought a few minutes and showed me this product, which I could feel IMMEDIATELY was the right shoe! Altra, makes a sole that almost feels like your are running barefoot, in that your toes get involved in the action of running. Unlike any other running shoe which is all about immobilizing and cushioning, this shoe actually gets the ball of your foot involved. Much less impact because they train you to run and land on the balls of your feet, not the heels. If you look at the picture, you can see that there is almost no inuslation on the heel....by design. This is important to note becuase the shoe is designed to help you land on the ball of you foot, which by nature cushions the impact. For perspective, I am a 58 year old that is in training for the Rock and Roll 1/2 Marathon. I was a short distance jogger in my earlier days but had to quit due to injuries, laziness and complexities of life. These shoes have allowed my to get back into jogging/walking without the pain of impact on my fairly beat up and totally out of shape body. I have purchased (from REI online) the other models of this brand to compare. I will keep them all if they are as good as these shoes. BTW - I was not compensated in any way for this reveiw and purchased these shoes at the Redmond REI.

Where have you been all my life?

I suffer from plantar fasciitis and these are the ONLY shoes are REI that have helped. I tried the Lone Peak several months ago, but my foot kept sliding around inside. This model fits more snuggly makes it a viable trail shoe for me. I would have given it a five star rating, but there is a small quality issue with the tongue coming unsewn around the edges.

Wide Feet Zero-Drop Shoe of Dreams

This is my go-to shoe for running on pavement or crushed gravel. I have wide feet for a lady, so I buy the men's version of most Altra shoes, and I love the room in the toe box. Cushioning is just about perfect for me, maybe leaning towards the too soft side, but is great for when I want to put in a long run on the levee trail. This isn't what I reach for when I'm planning technical trails (I want something less cush/more responsive), but for everything else this is it. The one downside is that the laces aren't quite long enough for a full bow-tie when I loop it through the extra hole at the ankle, but that doesn't hurt performance at all. Overall a great light trail shoe and one that I would purchase again and again from Altra! Side note, very little arch support here (and across the brand, really), so if you're new to the zero-drop/minimalist thing maybe consider trying this one on in-store before committing. Sizing is also off (ALSO a brand thing), and these run small. So really, try these on in-store for best results.

Let me tell you

So I was reading that Altra fixed their sizing issue so I tried on an 11.5 which I am. I had to return it because once the rockplate was added the shoes did not fit. I got a 12. The size 12 delaminated after 4 miles. I also found that the shoe material did not continue all the way through the toe and actually was just the lamination so after 4 or so more miles a small hole started to appear. I bought them because they are the only zero drop shoe with padding underfoot and decent tread. I owned a first edition of this shoe and that was pretty terrible as there was tons of heel slippage. In the few miles this shoe made it the fit was great and the heel slippage of past models was gone. Last year I did not buy Altra and bought Topo because they're lighter and the quality of construction is much better. Topo lacks in the tread department and has less cushion underfoot. For the Arizona desert the Superior is better. So, I also did not buy last years release of this sho because after visiting 5 separate retailers and seeing that every shoe had severly poor stitching I felt I could not trust the shoe. Especially when buying from somewhere that doesn't allow returns. I think Altra really needs to get it together with quality control. I was talking to a worker at REI today and he was saying he has been seeing them come back due to delamination of the toe area. I would say it is buyer beware you prob won't get a durable quality built shoe. You will get a shoe with amazing fit and function until it breaks a few miles later.

Fits wide feet???

I have size 14 4E feet. I had to take the insole out and wear them for a few days to get them comfortable. At this point I could put in the rock guard for a run, but not for wearing around during the day. Have only had them for a couple weeks and several short runs. So far so great on the knees. Four stars instead of five simply because of not being able to get something that naturally is in my size!
