Buy it, ... but and fix it first ...

Please do yourself a favor: get the pack! ... but and fix it before you use it. In other words, the left strap where the trekking poles attach is abrasive, specifically, the nylon fabric and stitching is like melted plastic edgy. It's so bad that it tore up $1,000 worth of clothes before we could even figure out why just the left arm pit was getting all torn up in my clothes, The Meridian does the same thing. Rub your finger along this area. If it feels at all edgy abrasive snaggy, take care of it right away by covering it with Tenacious tape. p.s. ... It works best to first cut out entirely the trekking pole attachment strap. The pack will look a bit hacked up, but it's so worth the fix. Hopefully, Osprey will fix this ... ?

Plenty has been said about the positives on this and they're all true. Where this bag fell short for me were the hip pockets. Others have already complained about their relative small size. Sure they could and probably should be bigger. I can fit my iPhone 6s Plus with some concentrated effort but the location of the pockets, so far back makes it almost impossible to zip up. Zipping something closed usually requires two hands, or something providing force against the direction you are zipping to close. (one hand on the zipper and the other holding the fabric at the end/bottom. When the pockets are open, unless you have super long arms, you're going to struggle to reach either zipper with both hands. This will be impossible if you have to circumnavigate a beer belly. This problem could be easily remedied if Osprey would move the pockets further forward or simply rotate the zippers in the direction they should face! In other words, the zippers should zip open by pulling towards the front (opening a zipper usually requires just 1 hand.) and then zip closed by pulling the zipper towards your rear. This will allow for easy 2 handed operation because your opposite arm/hand doesn't have to reach as far. I was going to have a seamstress flip the zippers for me but that will most likely void my warranty on the entire pack should I ever need it, so I will be returning this for something with functional hip pockets. I really question how anyone at Osprey could produce so many packs and not address something with such a simple fix. If you're overweight or have average arms or less, forget it. You're not going to be able to utilize the hip pockets as they are designed. Simple as that.

The next level

I have had this pack for two weeks and I have used it on two 9-mile day hikes. I love that the rain cover and water reservoir were included. I easily drink water whenever I need it, and I think I actually drink less of it on the trail (I drink 48 ounces before starting). I used the rain cover today, and it was easy and effective. The compartments are good, including the spot to stuff my jacket and the clip for my car key. I like that the weight sits on my hips instead of my shoulders. I am a tall woman (5'10") and so this fits me better than the Mira, and it still fits well around my hips. I am looking forward to a hiking-filled summer!

The squeaks will drive you mad.

Great pockets, AG is great, hip pockets just big enough but the squeaks. I made this sound by pressing in the same spot on all the Mantas REI had on the rack. Its loud and unnerving. Osprey has no got nor guarantee it can go away. This pack got worse with use.

Can't Go Wrong

The Manta 36 is the best instructor pack that I have purchased as a Wilderness Field Instructor. Working in wilderness therapy and being responsible for the safe keeping of medications and personal information, I am required to have my pack on or near me 24/7. Carrying a pack for days at a time has in the past left me with back pain. However, the suspension system and forming hip built of the Manta helps keep the weight on my hips and makes my job much more enjoyable. The only con of the pack is that it does not have straps on the bottom part of the pack. These straps on other packs I have used to strap on bear ropes or water filters which was really convenient and kept the inside of my pack cleaner. I have used this pack on 56 hikes in the Pisgah National Forest, Smokey Mountains, and in the Maroon Bells Wilderness Area. I strongly recommend it as a wilderness professional and as an avid adventurer.

Best Hiking Backpack

I expected this to be the best day hiking backpack and it exceeded all my expectations: the great-sized 2.5 liter water bladder (even though I was constantly drinking water while hiking all day in Joshua Tree National Park, I still was not able to finish it, the 2.5 is a perfect size); the dual-entrance bottle pockets on either side if you choose to use this (can take out and put back any bottles without having to take the backpack off); the generous-sized large storage space (hence the "36" size) can actually fit a lot of items; the outer open pocket, which can open and close from the semi-horizontal straps you see on the side, and personally, it is the PERFECT place to slide my canon camera/lens into - it is a deep pocket, and there is absolutely no chance the camera would fall out, making it the perfect storage place for quick storage/access, I can also put my tripod in the space, and when the straps are tightened, it stays still and also stays well behind my head; the anti-gravity hip straps and shoulder straps are extremely helpful, even with a loaded backpack with a full water bladder, it did not seem heavy nor became uncomfortable during long hikes; the outer bottom area has a pull out rain cover to extend over the bag, this is a great idea for wet environments, although the entire bag is already waterproof and has coverings over the zippers. I honestly can't think of a single issue with this backpack, highly recommend this. 10/10. This is "thee" brand to buy for these type of products.

AG suspension is cool and comfortable

I bought this pack and returned it because the frame was squeaking to the point where friends and other hikers were commenting and the clip for the reservoir broke after about a dozed days skiing and hiking. I checked the reviews and no mention of the squeaking so I figured it was defective. Replacement pack is perfect. Belt pockets are too small but other features are great. I am 5'11" and I don't think the M/L pack would fit someone much taller than me.

Major design flaw

Although the placement of side storage and zipper functionality is definitely annoying, this complaint is about the chest strap attachment point--it broke in half from a simple adjustment, which makes the Manta AG 36 pack essentially useless. The pack has been used roughly 4 times in the last 6 months from when I purchased it new. Of course I could use paracord in a pinch but that isn't the point. Hopefully Osprey uses a stronger material for their next design.

The perfect multi-use bag ever

I recently purchased The Manta AG 36 and carried it on an overnight trip ( 10 mi ) . This is the pack I have been waiting for . It has lots of storage and was very comfortable to carry . I got of likes on the trail from other packers . After I got back from my overnighter I put it on and tested it out on my mnt bike for 10 miles and it work very well . P.S. a previous review stated that there wasn't a dedicated opening for the hydration hose except through the zipper . I'm not sure what that's about but there is a dedicated opening for the hose from the hydration bag . That comment almost deterred me from a great purchase . Great bag Osprey.
