Best way to make camp coffee
This is my favorite camping coffee maker I have ever used. Perfect size, wonderfully compact, and I only have 2 complaints. 1. I wish there was a better form of lid other than the coffee grounds holder/cup so that the piece can be used as a cup. I just tip the lid for the little grounds holder and use it to cover the thermos to keep bugs out and coffee hot. No big deal. 2. The handle for the piece used to boil the water has plastic in it...which i did not realize until it had melted all over my camp stove. It still works fine without the plastic piece but it is a little harder to pick up now using thw handle. All in all a great coffee maker.
The all-in-one outdoorsman coffee maker
I took a trip up to Olympia, WA were I thankfully discovered this great piece of equipment. At REI it is no secret that their products are more compact than anyone else's on the market, needless to say I brought this system with me to Mt. Rainier, Capitol Forest, and many other fun hikes while there. It kept my coffee and hot chocolate warmer than even the label states. Now that I am back in Florida for the time being, this coffee system works just as well with keeping drinks cold too. I give it 5 stars, the absolute only draw back is I wish that the container under the 2 cups/ the lid of the thermos was sealed to place liquids such as creamer. It works perfectly to place coffee grounds, hot chocolate mix, sugar in, or even as a smaller third cup. *****
Nothing like a cup of coffee on a cold morning
First of all, the only negative that I have is the fact that the pot for the water is a little narrow and depending on your stove (MSR pocket rocket/micro rocket or similar) you may have to do a little bit of a balancing act for it to sit right. With that being said, this is a great system. The press keeps the ground coffee out of your brew and the thermos keeps coffee HOT for a long time even in cold weather. The 17 oz version brews enough coffee for two in my experience, unless your a pot a day type of person then this won't cut it. They do make a larger version but REI doesn't carry that one so if you feel like you need more per sitting you might have to look elsewhere for that version.
Good, but some design enhancements needed
The French press itself is wonderful. Makes enough coffee at once for a couple of people and keeps it warm. We take this both car camping and backpacking. There are 2 complaints that bring down the rating for me. (1) the grounds container is so small. If you plan on drinking multiple days it's not all that useful for coffee. A better use would be sugar or powder creamer if you use those. (2) the pot to boil water is worthless if you have a MSR stove. It's too small to fit on the arms of the Whisperlite so we have to boil water in a regular pot. Obviously not difficult, but annoying (especially when backpacking) considering this comes with one built in. Take your stove into account when purchasing.
The plastic melts
Great concept except for the plastic in the handle. Used it one time and it melted enough that the handle no longer goes down. Otherwise the storage capacity had enough space for coffee grounds and I'm glad it had 2 cups to share. Going to return the product and see if there is something similar without the plastic in the handle.
Impressed with a great cup of joe
I was very excited to see this product on the shelves. I have been looking for this for quite some time now. I have a mother who lived in the country (Navajo Indian reservation) out in forested lands at 7K ft. with no running water or electricity. I wanted to surprise her with this product however, she passed away before I could give her one. She loved her early morning coffee in a French press, but never had the option of being able to heat, press and carry with her this simple yet enjoyable luxury. Thank you for a greatly designed and very practical product. I am reminded her every time I'm out in the forest with my Family...and can't help but to think of how much she would have enjoyed it. I use it with much ease. It's durable and has many uses other than just a press. I've used it just to heat water for tea and simple food preparations. It's easy to clean and create a great coffee! I highly recommend it and have actually advertised it at work to many people. They appreciated that I shared such a product because it was also what they were looking for.
Melts on stove
I used this twice. The second time the plastic in the handle melted and was rendered useless.
All in one coffee system
I bought this on a whim when browsing the camping section at REI and it's one of the best impulse buys. The thermos contains everything, other than the heat source, that you need to make a cup of coffee in a condensed package. I have used it car camping and have been very pleased with my purchase. Highly recommend it.
Compact unit makes fine coffee
This is a sself-contained unit that brews up an excellent cup. I am currently using it in a domestic setting, but it will be superb in a camping situation. It is probably a bit heavy to be my first choice for backpacking, but that usage is not totally out of the question. I am glad I had the opportunity to fiddle with the assembly in store before i purchased, because i had some difficulty freeing the filter from the thermos jug. Putting the assembly in a pan of hot water finally did the trick
Ever been cold, and needed a cup of coffee bad?
I spend a lot of time 4 wheeling in the back country, and keep an emergency kit in the back of my truck in case I get stuck for awhile. This is the perfect companion to my kit. I can fill it with coffee from the pot when I start out, and know I have 2 refills left in an emergency. I think Thermos embellished the heat holding time a little, but it's still a fantastic piece of gear.
