Great for car camping and home use!
I’ve had two of these now. The older version had a plastic coffee grind strainer which cracked when I dropped it onto the pavement so the metal strainer is a good upgrade. Makes great coffee at home and on trips and keeps it warm for a good amount of time. Also, I like that it’s 1L so it makes enough for 3-4 small cups or two large cups. Would highly recommend.

Not as pictured, annoying design flaw
The traditional design for most presses involves a mesh ring that is pressed against the sidewalls of the pot using a spring. This one relies on a silicon O-ring that is fashioned to a non-metal piece that has metal mesh built into it. The filter part is not metal like pictured (I specifically bought this here because it is the metal one shown. I received a plastic or nylon material filter part, there are far fewer sections of mesh than shown in the metal version pictured here. There are a few problems but ultimately not using the spring style means coffee doesn't filter through the side of the filter, and less holes overall means it doesn't filter as quickly even when held completely upside down. The end result is that it is difficult to actually get all of your coffee out. I've used this product every day for at least 5 months at this point and I always find myself annoyed when I open it to clean it and see that the grounds are soupy, as if there was a third of a cup of coffee that could have been had. What it does do well is keep it hot. 6 hours later, still extremely hot. 1 star may seem harsh, however, REI literally got the sale as a result of misrepresenting the product so it's partly due to that, and its actual shortcomings.

Perfect campground brewer for cold mornings

I finally found the perfect press for cold mornings at the campground. Other ones I’ve tried either didn’t have a thermal carafe, or it did but it was super heavy and bulky. This Java press from GSI keeps the coffee hot for hours so you don’t have to rush your morning boost - and keeps a nice hot serving for those late sleepers! I love how lightweight this is despite its good volume. It Is easy to rinse out quickly at the campground or to keep clean at home by tossing it all in the dishwasher. It has a nice rubberized pad on the bottom (see photo) to keep it from slipping off the picnic table or if you have it sitting on top of the cooler. It brews a nice tasting pot of coffee. I will say the instructions for portions make for a very strong pot of coffee so if you like it a bit milder, adjust your coffee amount-it took a few times to get it right (for me) but now it’s perfect. I feel it’s a fair price for a nice quality product from GSI. We use it a lot and are very happy with it.

Great coffee and hot at near freezing

I’ve used this Frenchpress 3 times. Each trip the temps got colder; eventually near freezing. Theis Frenchpress keeps the coffee hot for over an hour. The internal mesh is excellent in separating coffee from grounds. Excellent quality and highly recommend it.

Outstanding!

Used coffee presses for years, primarily for home use. Got sick and tired of the percolator and ending up with a dip of cud in my coffee. Have this a run and it works better than expected. A quality cup of how is what you put into it, so im not gonna tell you it makes a better cup. Why I can share is that it’s good for three good cups, holds the temp extremely well, and I have had zero brow by… I am a Java snob at heart, so for either home or outdoors, this is a very good press.

Best Camp Coffee

Used this several times on some overnight backpacking trips. Very cold mornings but this little guy kept the coffee warm all morning. Through boiling oatmeal and packing camp up the coffee was still hot after over an hour in sub 40 temps. I’ve started to use it at home, nice having warm coffee all day!

Best Press in the Woods

Would absolutely recommend to anyone who will drink coffee all morning in whilst camping. It will keep your coffee warm far longer than the coffee will taste fresh - exactly what it's supposed to do. My only complaint is that the lid's seal could be improved; incorporating a 'Locked' option would likely resolve the issue.

Easy to Use - Holds Heat

Used the new french press for several days this month. It's a pretty standard french press, so use is very straightforward and it works well. The only thing that threw me was that the "pour" marking on the lid needs line up with the handle rather than the spout. Definitely holds heat well - to the point that when I went to clean out the grinds a while after drinking, the grinds were still very hot! Definitely open it up and let it cool off before sticking your hand in to clean out the grinds.
