One review that was useful mentioned the included white filter made the coffee taste plastic-like. The thin white film filter comes off easily, you just unscrew the bottom plate and slip it off. That being said, this bottom plate has a fine-mesh metal filter that can work by itself. I used it like this the first time and did not get any rough grounds in my pour. But if you want an extra filter layer to filter out more finer particulates (some finer particle "sludge"), I simply used the included white filter as a cutting guide to cut paper filters to size and just insert them in the bottom. Quite simple, easy to replace, and paper filters don't leave any taste.
Almost perfect
I have been using my press since Nov 2017 and it is going strong. I started using it in home as well as camp and it is my default coffee making method. It has been heavily used in last two years and I start to see signs of wear and tear but I don't see any performance change. First I wasn't sure but now I see I haven't paid for any coffee maker/filter since 2017! Pros: - Lightweight - Snow peak sells the mesh screen (I didn't need any) - Could work as a pot, mug and tea maker. - Double mesh/filter helps to reduce any grains in your coffee. You'll see some, if you press fast or don't align well. - Tight lid - Perfect volume for me (not diameter though) - Quality made in Japan - No waste (no paper filter, even though unfiltered coffee may not be as healthy as filtered coffee) Cons: - Stainless steel rod and I think the filter holder (I don't understand why, I guess makes it cheaper) - No replacement for other parts (fabric filter and silicone seal) - It is slightly small for many stoves (MSR whisperlite, Vargo wood stove, Trangia alcohol stove stand) and it will easily tip over. I wish it was half an inch wider! Cleaning tip: -I just rinse every time I use it but sometimes I detach everything and wash them. I have tried many different methods (vinegar, baking soda, regular dish washing liquids) but personally I get the best result with good old Dr. Bronner's soap. It turns the filter to pure white like the first day! - Be gentle with the fabric filter. It may start fraying. I suppose you can cut from any other similar fabric and replace it. Coffee grains in your mug: slow press and keeping both filters as clean as you can. I usually wait until I use a product for a long time so I can write a useful review and in most cases when I write the review that product is discontinued but this is one of those items that is still being produced and I don't hear any decline in quality.
The one indulgence--even on minimalist outings
I'm addicted to good coffee and I detest the instant stuff made from mass-produced robusta beans. Snow Peak's amazingly lightweight Titanium French Press is ideal for the job and doesn't add much weight to my pack. Because of the tall profile, I pour boiling water from a shorter MSR Titanium Kettle into this French Press to save cooking time and stove fuel. Invariably there are some grounds in the last cup, but that's also the case at home with my glass French press. Unless you prefer coffee grounds in all of your food, I recommend using a second pot for boiling water and preparing food--this French press is more of a dedicated coffee indulgence than a utilitarian backcountry cooking component.
love mine!
Bought mine over a year ago and have used it dozens of times. Super lightweight, extremely compact, and works perfectly. Be sure to push slowly to avoid any grains slipping through and you should get a perfect cup every time. Easy to clean and doubles as a nice cup for all drinks while camping. Highly recommend!
Great cup of coffee.
I bought this to save space for car camping and it works great. You can shove it practically anywhere (within reason) without worry of it being dented up or crushed. It doesn't get banged around. It's good for a nice single cup of coffee but cleans quickly for the second cup. I've noticed little difference, with respect to grounds in the cup, between this camp coffee press and others (camp, single cup, etc. - owned a thermos 34). To reduce the grounds with *any* press, including this one, it should take 30s to a minute to press - i.e., slowly. This one was on par with most others. I was surprised at how easy this was to take apart and clean. I thought it would be difficult or cumbersome but it was actually easy and quick. This along with a back country pot and micro stove, all tossed in the Jeep, means I can make a good cup of coffee, anywhere, easily and quickly.
Silicone breaks down, no spare parts available
I never liked it (it always lets grains get through the filter), but used it because the light weight is unbeatable when travelling. After 7 years with moderate use the silicone rim of the plunger became sticky and soft. That would be ok if it would be possible to get spare parts, but even snowpeak doesn't sell any. So much for the 'lifelong guarantee'...
AWESOME
I use this every time I go out. Cleans easy, and makes as strong as coffee as you can handle. It is light weight and durable. I put my water in, boil it over the fire, and start to press. Make sure you are using gloves or separation from the handle. Because that Snow Peak Be Hot!!!!!
Awesome, well made, holding up well
Super lightweight and durable. I make coffee with it almost every day and it is still looking great. Theres the occasional ground or two that escape the press but its not a big deal. Alot of people say that they removed the white plasticish material and just use the mesh and I also recommend that. It does seem to work slightly better without it, and it was a little sketch not knowing exactly what that material was.
Makes a great cup of Joe, needs improvement.
bought this for my wife and she absolutely loves it. We haven't gotten any coffee grounds in cups so it is doing its job. improvements can be made by making it wider and possibly dual use as a cook pot also. I found that it takes longer to boil the water because of the tall shape. If it was wider and had more surface area you would use less fuel to boil your water. The only other problem was it boiled over when I had it 3/4 full. I highly recommend this to anyone who absolutely needs coffee on trail.
Ruined by the Plastic Filter
Used this on a few trips and loved many things about it: very lightweight, sturdy, just the right size for a solo traveler. Unfortunately, for some reason, they opted to use a plastic filter unlike every other coffee press I’ve ever owned in my life (which is several). Titanium itself is tasteless, and that is one reason why I opted for this particular press, but the plastic imparts a toxic plastic taste that makes it unusable for me. If you’re at all sensitive to that sort of thing, and even if you’re not but value your health, I’d recommend looking for similar product with a standard wire filter. I just found one on Amazon for about 2/3 of this price, and I’m quite pleased with it. I would have rather bought it from REI, but unfortunately, that is not an option.
