Used this bag on a 5 day backpacking trip in Yosemite and a 4 day trip in Zion. Roomy enough for everything I needed and then some. Bear canister, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, tent, food, camp stove, water filter, etc all fit nicely. You can get to gear from top or bottom and many extra pockets for quicker access items. It could easily be used for longer trips as well. Very comfortable. Back vented well. I had 2 minor issues that required alterations. 1: my water bladder attachment wasn't sewn correctly to use the clip and hold it in place. REI replaced my bag with a new one. 2: there was a toggle clasp, gear holder on the left chest strap that rubbed my arm when I walked. I cut it off and you can't even tell it was ever there. I thought it was a weird spot to hold gear anyways; right next to your arm pit. All in all, this bag is very nice and I enjoy using it.

comfortable but has significant flaws

First I'll say that I got this pack because it is very comfortable. The fit and adjustments are excellent. After backpacking with it twice I have some regrets. There are several design issues that are very disappointing. The opening for the hydration tube compresses the tube against the rigid frame and makes the hydration tube useless. I have to re-route the tube out the top over to the side instead. There is no easy way to strap your sleeping pad on the bottom. This is a real problem. If you choose to take the removable top pouch off you lose the only secure pockets to put anything of importance in. The side pockets are open in front and top and can't be used to put phone or wallet in. I would return it for the 65 version, but it is too big.

On my second one and can't wait to test it out!

I bought the 2008 model of this backpack in 2009 when I had just started backpacking. I used it all over the southeastern United States, Vermont,, and Ecuador - just to name a few places where this trusty pack had been. By the time I finished my month long stent in Ecuador the fabric along the sides of the backpack and front zippers started fraying and tearing away. I contacted Osprey and they gave me a choice of picking out two new backpacks. I had to stay with the Aura because its been such a great pack! I can't wait to take the second one out to Big Bend next month and break it in! From what I can tell so far is that the newer model will be even more comfortable. The straps and the waist have thicker padding and the suspension looks even more reinforced from my old model. I have a small waist with prominent hips and this pack sits great on either location, which is nice when I'm going on long trips and start to get a little sore. As with any pack, I recommend getting fitted for it before purchasing.

My favorite hiking companion

I purchased the Aura 50 in 2012, so I have the older purple model, but it's the same basic setup. I've used it for small backpacking trips, as well as my 5.5 month thruhike of the AT this year. The 50-liter size is perfect for not letting you carry too much weight, although to fit all my winter gear I did have to use some compression sacks to get everything to fit. After resupply days, I sometimes just had to leave the top somewhat uncinched to hold everything, but that was no big deal. I put my sleeping bags (winter, then summer) in a compression sack in the bottom of my pack, and secured my sleeping pad on the bottom external straps. This was handy as it made my pack a kind of chairback when I took breaks. The straps and hip belt were as comfortable as a pack can be, but with long, sweaty distances, you will always have rubbing. I got packrash on my hips and back, but not the worse case I saw on trail. The side stretchy pockets are nice, but they get REALLY tight when your pack is full, so it can be hard to put stuff in them while it's strapped to your back. The reservoir holder in the back is nice because it fits Camelbak, MSR, etc without issue. The improvement I would request is having an external bladder section like many of my male friends' packs so that I don't have to unpack everything when I go to fill the bladder. The hip pockets were handy for fitting my SPOT GPS, pocket knife, watch face, etc. I do wish they were a bit bigger. As with any long-distance hike over many months, the pack (especially straps) were SERIOUSLY funky after a while. After multiple washings, it still smells, but all packs will do that. I got a lot of compliments on my pack through my hikes, and I'll be buying the same pack when it's time to retire my current one.

Hip belt caused horrible bruising.

I bought this pack in store, and was sized properly for a small. Despite this, on every single trip I took it on with any kind of weight, it bruised my hips. I had the pack sitting in the correct spot on my hips, but something in the very rigid frame did not agree with my body geometry. As a minor issue, the hip frame also makes it incredibly annoying to put on. Organization was meh in the pack, I never really got the hang of it. The 2-way access mesh pockets on the side just made me unable to use those pockets for smaller things because those items would fall out when I laid my pack down. After giving this pack several tries, I returned it and just got the Kyte 46 instead.

Worked amazing for this 57 y/o woman on her trip

I really wanted to try backpacking again - did a one-nighter when I was 25. My son is an experienced backpacker and said he would take me. I spent a year preparing. I'm in decent shape - I walk about 5 miles, three-four times a week, do some beginner level Yoga, and work with weights; but I am by no means the athletic type, and have to admit I felt intimidated when looking over the backpack and surrounded by 20 - 30 something y/o customers. I researched a lot, and choose this pack. I bought two of these: a small and a medium to test them out at home. It was too hard for me to decide at the store. The sales reps were really awesome in helping me, but I needed "alone time" with the packs. :) My torso measures 19", so I fall into both sizes. I tested them out with my gear making sure I did the torso adjustments, looking in the mirror, walking around, etc. and the medium fit hands down. I worked hard to keep my load to no more than 30 pounds (I weigh 145). I also got the water reservoir that Osprey makes, and it worked like a dream. The side pockets really don't hold a water bottle - there are openings in them and a bottle could slip through. I used them for my rain gear, and tent poles (was able to keep the tent poles in easily because of the compression straps). Yes, the hip belt is a little tricky to get the hang of when putting on the pack, but that is because of the suspension system. And, it's worth the hassle. I practiced with it a lot before I left and got into a good put-the-pack-on routine that worked fine through the trip. REI.com even has a video about how to put a back pack on. The suspension system meant no sweat on my back, and really hugged my hips. The front mesh pocket worked great for wet clothes. It did get snagged and got a hole in it though. I brought it back to REI and they gave me a new bag. The reason I shop at REI. They also said, Osprey would fix it if I preferred. I was amazed how 30 pounds did not feel anywhere near 30 pounds. When I first lifted it to put on my back, I was really scared: "How in the world was I going to do this - I must be out of my mind!". But when I got it on my back, it felt like half the weight. I did a 5-day through hike in Sequoia Nat'l Forest. I call myself a scenic hiker - I'm not into racing through and making myself exhausted - so I average about 5-7 miles a day. That might translate to "whimp" to some of you; but I had an amazing time. To me, backpacking is a way to get into the deep parts of nature without the crowds. And that is exactly what happened. The pack fit the bear box (we each used the small Contender 101 and were able to get in more than enough food for 5 days and campsuds/toothpaste, etc.), the water reservoir (I went with 2 liters and brought a lifestraw along), water filter pump, first aide kit, extra set of clothes, jacket, hat, cup, bowl, spork, rain gear, backpack rain cover, fly net for my head (those flies just steal my joy!), toiletries, and I hooked water shoes (for the river), and the bottle (with the lifestraw) on the outside. My sleeping bag, pad (I got one of those 1 pound Nemo pads), and pillow (little air pillow) all fit in the bottom section. I carried the tent and poles (2 person tent - my son carried the rain fly). My son and I split some things - eg. he carried the stove and cook set, I carried the first aide kit. He got himself the Osprey Atmos and loved the pack too. Our only complaint is that the zippers on the hip compartment don't seem to be optimized - they were hard to zip and unzip to get out a snack.

Good size but short backpackers, but...

I just received my bag and have loaded her up for a test run around the house. It seems to carry a heavy load tolerably; aka it doesn't make the weight magically disappear or feel halved, but the combination of straps and frame do make it feel more evenly distributed compared to my older bag. But there's a big problem: that this version of the Aura AG 50 lacks the external straps for your sleeping pad/tent. Maybe not a big deal for some, but I hate to lose internal pocket space that could otherwise be food & beer to my tent. I will be returning and looking at models (basically every other Osprey Aura, I now see) that do have those straps.

So comfortable - makes 30lbs feel like 15 lbs

This is the first pack I've owned but it far exceeds my expectations. I have the 50 and I can fit all my gear for a week long hike on the AT. The weight feels like it is distributed evenly and sits on your hips - the hip belts feel like a hug. It is well ventilated and didn't cause excess back sweat. You can strap a pad to the loops on the bottom zipper or the trekking pole loops if you get creative. The bladder pocket keeps my non-osprey bladder secure. I would recommend this to first time hikers or seasoned ones alike.

Best backpack ever

This backpack is just incredible. It feels like it's hugging your back, so the weight is distributed across your whole torso, and it works the core muscles, too. The only downside is that any of the sizes above XS are too long to qualify as a free carry-on on airplanes.

Not the pack for me.

First let me say that I felt kind of pushed into this pack. I used it for a one night pack and immediately returned it. I knew from the start as I packed it that I did not like it, but I didn't have time to take it back the night before my trip and decided to give it a fair shake first. It didn't fit right, I couldn't close the pockets on the hip belt while wearing the pack and my lunch immediately fell out of the open side pockets (I used a safety pin to fix this), I tried to use the side holders for my trekking poles and they too fell out. I took the pack back to REI and exchanged it for another. Sorry Osprey!
