I've had 3 pairs of these in 1.5 years. They are the most comfortable shoes I've ever owned and they are fantastic for backpacking. They have plenty of toe room and fit true to size. I backpack and hike a lot, but it still seems like these should be lasting longer, particularly for the price. In my opinion, they're only fantastic for about 500 miles. I've had the same problem with each pair where the bottom cracks open in one or more places and then water comes in from the bottom. This is particularly problematic for me because I also wear orthodics and they aren't supposed to get wet. I'm going to try a pair of Keens next and see if they last longer.
I'm a huge fan of Saloman XR Mission TR's. Have a few pairs. I wanted to find a "beefier" Saloman for my extended backpack trips and these being waterproof convinced me to purchase. I was wrong and they are going back. The XR's have a Sensiflex. These do not. They fit a big snugger in the toe box and the plastic on the outside by the pinky toe rubbed my toe horribly. The are extremely warm compared to my XR's which made my foot further expand in turn making the toe box tighter. I'll just stick with my mesh Trail Runners and continue to wear Smart Wool socks for wicking.
I've had a pair of these for the last 3-4 years and they are FANTASTIC. I wear them on day hikes and trail runs and just for walking the dog around the neighborhood when it's rainy or slushy out. They've kept my feet dry through stream crossings, snow, lots of rain, and everything in between. They have great stability and traction and are really comfy to boot - no problems uphill or downhill and I've put quite a few mountain miles on them. I don't like running in them a lot as they're pretty heavy for what I'm used to, but they can't be beat for day hikes in any weather and terrain. They've also held up amazingly well for all the miles they've seen and I will definitely be replacing with the newest model when they do finally wear out.
I love these shoes, which I've used to run in during this past winter and shoulder seasons. I run on what I suppose most urbanites would call trails, although we call them unpaved roads, and I often came home with cold, wet feet, especially if the puddles weren't frozen. These babies were on sale, so, even though they're partly pink, I decided to give them a try. And they worked. They are comfy to run in, they keep my feet dry, and work well with traction devices. Unless I'm going out with snowshoes, these are my winter exercise shoes of choice. Next time, however, guys, please get rid of the pink--really.
I love Solomon shoes, the lacing system, etc - mY plan was to do dirt trails and walking in the snow and I thought these would be perfect. I was so excited I wore them for a 4 mile moderately paced walk on dry city asphalt trail to try them out. However, even with plenty of toe room there is a hard rubber piece at the toe that hit my toes wrong when I stepped and I ended up with a blackened toe nail on each foot. Returned them.
I have worn Salomon trail shoes for ten years and this XA Pro series for 7 years. I love them! But I have learned the past three years or so to watch for signs that the manufacturer is a knockoff, specifically: the logo, the lacing mechanism, the top mesh and the heel loop. You can tell the authentic versions from those made overseas the minute you open the box and it smells like fertilizer. When the image is positioned so you can't see the logo or the mesh, for example, you take a chance. And I did. And these failed miserably. Within a week, I had black toe and blisters and callouses. I ended up returning them and purchasing the exact same model someplace else and am running quite happily with no problems.
My shoes didn't last being waterproof!!! Actual holes wore into the side of the upper shoe. Not worth the money.
I bought these to replace my worn out Missions, I wanted something that was fully water proof and these fit the bill. I love the Salomon fit, I have a narrow heel and wide forefoot. However, I haven't quite fallen in love with these the way I did with my Missions. The higher ankle digs and rubs a little, and the top lace makes it hard to tuck in the extra laces. I still run in them and wear them around regularly, but I probably won't buy them again.
Much lighter feel and more comfortable than my prior Salomon's, but in very dewy grass my socks get quite wet. Waterproof claim does not live up to my expectations from earlier styles. I still like them, overall, and will likely try to cope with the "wet" issue with extra socks or trying a fabric treatment on the surface.
I've been wearing these shoes for backpacking and hiking for the past 3 years. They are the absolute best in terms of fit, durability, and comfort. The fit is very snug in the heel and open in the toe box - exactly what you need for hiking. My heel doesn't slip and my foot doesn't move on downhills. I've worn these on hikes as long as 20 miles and I never end up with "hiker hobble." I've tried other trail running shoes for hiking but I often find them to be too squishy and not supportive enough. These, on the other hand, are very sturdy and supportive. I love the toe bumper too - I stub my toe a lot on rocks and these handle that just fine. I've found that they last for about 300 miles. If you're looking for a stable, durable hiking shoe, you can't go wrong with these.
