Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great! Bought this on the way to Alaska and just used it in Costa Rica--it works very well--no bites when I have it on. I'm almost 5'10" and I bought it very oversized in the XL for CYA, rear-end bite protection (it's more like a tunic this way and I'm all for protecting as much from mosquitos as possible). It's lightweight, perfect for warm-weather hiking and tropical, bug-filled nights. The white is nice but does stain easily. PLEASE please please make this is black--I'm from NYC and that would be great. Also--please make some maxi dresses and workout/hiking/knit leggings in this stuff or other Bugsaway material--the options are way too limited!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really works I had my doubts that such a loose weave shirt would really be effective - I tend to attract mosquitoes like no one else I've ever met and have resigned myself to practically bathing in 100% deet. But this shirt really works! It's nice that it's a more open weave so it's not too hot (though it's certainly not cool, after all it's a long sleeve hoody), and I like that the cuffs extend over the hands. The open neck is cooler, but I wish it was actually a bit more closed to offer more protection. I do love that it does have a hood since the blood suckers do like to get me on the scalp. Fantastic not to have to put on deet all the time. Also appreciate it's not in a dorky safari-style shirt like most other insect repellent tops. I also bought a size up as it looks better a little baggy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great if you are a bug magnet! Purchased to wear on a multi-night backpacking trip in buggy conditions. Used bugspray during the day and threw this on at camp in the evenings. Was a nice layer to throw on when it started to cool down (light weight, so for a warm summer evening) and was definitely effective at keeping bugs off of me! I am a mosquito magnet and I am wishing I had bought this years ago! I purchased the white one--worried about staining after reading other reviews, but so far dirt has come out with some stain remover. Will probably keep with camping gear and only wear when camping/hiking/backpacking or traveling in especially buggy areas so it lasts a while--it's only good for 70 washes.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good but flawed design gap I used this hoody to keep mosquitoes and other bugs away during a recent August trip to the Costa Rican rainforest. It seemed to work well in that regard, but there is one key design flaw: The women's version of this hoody has a somewhat deep V-neck that cannot be cinched up completely, leaving that area of your chest and neck exposed if you do not wear a shirt underneath--a potential deal breaker for women who want to get the maximum protection from mosquitoes carrying Zika and other diseases. What's puzzling is that the V-neck seems like a unnecessary concession to "style" for something intended almost entirely to be a functional garment. (The men's version, which I also bought for my husband and son, has a more protective crew neck.) With more and more women needing as much protection as possible from Zika- and other disease-bearing mosquitoes, I would strongly urge ExOfficio to fix this design flaw in an otherwise good product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 5'10" 180lbs XL Great product that fits pretty true to size. I wanted something less fitting, so I could have gotten a L and it would have probably still fit. I love that's it's longer than average in both torso and sleeves. Material should be handle with care... I already had a catch in it with a jumping dog. :( But it is light and airy and keeps me protected from elements without being too bulky. Looking forward to hiking in this over the holiday weekend to test out its ability to keep the bugs away!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Too bad I was so excited when I bought this shirt as it met almost all of the criteria I was looking for in one shirt, including being lightweight and quick drying. I planned to wear it for outdoor activities in the Caribbean and Belize. It is pricey for something that is so casual and limited in its use. (It can't be dressed up to use in town or for the evening, and I pack light (carry-on only) with multi-function clothing. The main problem? Some kind of stain got on it the first time I wore it (source unknown- not food) and it will not come off, regardless of any stain-treatment methods I have tried. I can't wear it in public, it's so bad. Typically, Ex Officio clothing has excellent stain resistance, which makes it perfect for the kind of traveling I do.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from flattering multi-purpose shirt I've bought this hoody in many colors and love the material. One color did have a bit of a smell at first (like bug repellent) but none of the others came that way. The hoody seems to run a little big and I choose a small over an xsmall to avoid too much form fitting. It is flattering for a thin waist/middle area. I wear the Exofficio camis underneath. The material is also nice because it doesn't retain heat. Great for summer months out on the trails.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from perfect hoodie top Love that this is insect-proof and fashionable too. I am a nut about comfort, but want up-to-date styling as well. Even though I look good in button-down shirts as well as knits, I always prefer knits for comfort. And the styling on this is a welcome change from the ubiquitous button-down, sun-shield, insect-shield type shirts out there. The light mesh fabric on this is good for warm weather. The sleeves are plenty long enough for my long-ish arms. Cover my hands if I pull them down. The torso covers my rear enough to be be flattering (I'm long in the torso), and most importantly, it is well shaped and not too baggy at the hips -- or anywhere for that matter. I have a straight-ish slender figure (5'-7", 110lb., 33"-26"-33") with broad shoulders. Size small fit perfectly. Love the v-neck (I hate tight stuff around my neck) and the kangaroo pocket. The hood is big enough to be useful if you need it. Just about perfect! Some more colors (heathered?) would be nice. The bugs aren't out in full force here yet, so I can't comment on the Insect Shield effectiveness, but based on past Ex Officio products I've owned, I assume it will do the job.

Can you tell me what is in the BugsAway?  Wondering about the environmental consequences of the material and whether it poses any harm to water sources.

What are the back lengths on the small and the medium? I usually wear small but would like it a bit roomy. However, I'm short and the sleeves will be too long even in small. Length will help decide.

Asked by: absjr
The small back length is 26 inches. The medium back length is 27 inches.

I'm unfortunately allergic to Chrysanthemums and was wondering if this hoodie is using permethrin. If so, is it still okay to use since the chemicals are embedded into the clothing?

Asked by: Jgang
We require all our vendors to comply with all federal regulations but do not have specific chemical information, unfortunately. We encourage you to contact ExOfficio for more information.

Is this hoodie stretchy? I have several previous versions that are, but this looks like a slightly different fabric... Thanks!

Asked by: Kt on the Rocks
The Lumen will not have a lot of stretch. It is made from 70% polyester and 30% cotton with no Lycra or spandex.
