I tried both the Tempest 20 and 24 in M/L. The 20 would be fine for most of my hikes. I went with the 24 for times I need some extra room. I appreciate that Osprey offers the Tempest in 2 sizes and is adjustable. I'm 5'4"" with a 19"" torso. The 20 fit me but the 24 fit a bit better in the torso and the hip belt placement. The mesh water bottle holders of the 24 are also larger than the 20. 32 oz Nalgene's fit both but the 24 pockets are wider and deeper than the 20. All in all I like the 24 with it's larger size and, for me, an ideal fit. Other packs I tried: Deuter Speed Lite 22, Gregory Maya 22, Deuter Trail 24, Osprey Sirrus 24 and Gregory Jade 28.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Love my new backpack, perfect size for long day hike and comfortable with all the easily adjusted straps including load lifters. I like being able to put a water bladder in the separate outside pocket, and not having to put it in the main compartment. I also appreciate the zippered pockets for easy access to smaller stuff and keeps wallet/keys secure. The hip pockets are also nice and accommodate a fair amount, even though not quite big enough for a larger size cell phone. Taking one star off because the mesh pocket on the shoulder strap is useless. It’s too small and if you do fit something in there, the button closure does not hold and pops open all the time. I’m very happy with my purchase.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Love love love this pack. I’m not that experienced a hiker however I do know comfort. This pack is well-made. The frame allows it to move as you move without having deadweight on your shoulders. I got this pack the 24 L a little larger than my 22 for my Grand Canyon rim to rim hike, it doesn’t come up until October but with my practice hikes I find this to be very comfortable this pack. Also, the hip pockets are larger than most so you can put snacks and other important items that you need there. Easy access to use it from my room to thank you Osprey for helping me choose this one pack .
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Very comfortable. I usually pack it full and go hiking with my dog. No trouble using it all day. I would suggest making the base more sturdy so it can stand up by itself and the top opening slightly larger.
I purchased this for a week long bike trip. I wanted something that I could use for more than just biking even though everyone questioned me riding with a backpack. I'm very happy I decided to go with my gut and choose the backpack. It fit perfectly and didn't hurt my back at all for the 185 mile journey. It's a perfect size to pack everything I needed plus I had plenty of water easily available. I did replace the bladder with the Osprey 2.5L with the removable hose attachment. The bladder fits snuggly in the proper pocket but with the ability to take the hose off, it made it easier to fill. I do recommend only pulling it out just enough to fill while leaving the bladder in place. This prevents having to force it into a full backpack. I got the Purple and it is a GREAT color! super happy with this purchase.
I was so excited for this pack! I have a 10-year-old Talon 22 that I was hoping to replace/upgrade. The Tempest 24 significantly smaller than my old 22. I have some regular things that I keep in my pack always (socks, rain cover, small first aid kit, spikes, rain jacket) and these things barely fill the bottom of my 22, with plenty of room for layers and food. These same items in the 22 took up more than half the bag. It's a beautiful pack, so it's too bad it's so small.
I find the fit, the mesh of the frame, and the overall comfort of the pack to be excellent. The design of the strap adjustments is very intuitive. The choice to make the hydration sleeve external is, in my opinion, a poor choice. The slot is narrow, and it will make the bladder more exposed to the elements. I think having the sleeve be internal or its own zipper accessed sleeve would be better - it would make it easier for pulling the sleeve out and putting it back in.
This backpack is well made but the bag I received is not 24L but 22L! Because the title is Tempest 24L I did not feel the need to check the dimensions etc of the small size I ordered. My understanding was the small size related to the shoulder straps not that the bag volume is smaller. I did not have time to return it as I went on holiday soon after receiving it and had not time to change. As I say it is well made but I think the title is misleading.
There are so many features on this bag. Many can be adjusted. Bottle pockets on the side are big and can be tightened. Plenty of pockets inside to store bits away from the main compartment. Back straps can be adjusted using the velcro to move the straps higher or lower. The waist pockets are actually big enough to hold a smart phone as well as lots of snacks for hikes. Just a really good backpack and good quality.
The only negative I have is that the hip belt pockets don't fit my phone as well as I would like. Other than that this pack is amazing! Lots of pockets for all of my tiny items and the stretch pocket in the front is awesome for just shoving stuff in quickly. This is the most comfortable pack I've owned and I feel empowered to carry my poles, and all my gear, for miles without feeling uncomfortable.
