As one might note in other ratings, the description provided by REI is inaccurate. The mesh gusset extends only on the inner thigh (not full length). There is no zippered thigh pocket. They have drawstring cuffs and are not roll-up with snaps. There is a snap vice a button. One thing that is correct is that they are ultralight. The pictured item seems to represent the product received. None of the discrepancies noted are, however, that significant to me and I will be keeping them. I was looking for a very lightweight trouser that I did not have to treat with permethrin myself and that's what I got. I would certainly not buy these at MSRP.
I like the pants but they do not match the description at all. The listing says they have 2 drop in hand pockets, 2 drop in back pockets, and a zippered right thigh pocket. The pants I got have 2 hand pockets, 2 zippered back pockets and no thigh pocket. It also says they have mesh that runs most on the way down the legs but mine have 2 tiny mesh backed vents high on the inside of each thigh and that is it. Mine also have draw string cuffs instead of the role up cuffs with snaps and the tag says UPF 30 instead of the 45 that the listing states. The ones I got are the Sandfly so I don't know if the info in the listing is for something else or if they changed them and did not update the listing or if they changed them and I got the old style. I'm going to keep them because I still like the pants but I am a bit disappointed to not have the thigh pocket and cuff snaps.
Just noting that the pants I received were not as shown/described on the REI website. Mine were the same as described in the previous review covering this topic. I am keeping them (at sale price) simply to have a backup pair to wear in tick infested areas when I haven't kept up with the renewal of permethrin treated clothes using spray/soaking. These are supposed to last 70 washes. Since there are so few options for buying pretreated clothes with permethrin, I buy shirts/pants with weight/size/pockets etc to my liking and then treat them.
I’ve been wearing these pants for at least 15 years, maybe longer. They wear great and are comfortable in spring through fall weather. They also had a nice side pocket that fit my iPhone perfectly. So why change the style? The side pocket is now a slanted zippered pocket that sits too low and not good for storing a phone or much of anything. And the mesh on the inseam now nearly runs the entire leg — which means more work and cost to shorten the pant legs properly. My suggestion: bring back the old style and stop trying to change what’s not broken.
Got to use them in the field for 8 days and so far I am impressed. Incredibly lightweight nylon and the mesh on the inside of the leg helps keep air moving. I broke the second button on the inside of the waistband almost immediately but that was user error. I can’t say much on the insect repellent but I did not notice any on my lower half. (Ticks are present in the area and I didn’t find any on me). I recommend these to anyone who wants a lightweight pair of nylon pants. The mesh helps but doesn’t do a whole lot
My husband LOVES these pants! The size 38/32 fits him perfectly. It is very true to size. Originally purchased for a trip to Cambodia, he found the pants so comfortable, cool and truly insect repellent that he now won't go fishing in East Texas without them. They are also useful for time spent at Y-sports events on grass fields and grandchildren's birthday parties in the back yard. He literally wore out his first pair (from 2017) and currently has two pair in two different colors.
Nice, lightweight, ventilated, Bugsaway pants. The previous model (I have a pair of both the previous version and this version) had front pockets that were “top entry” pockets, these have the more useful & comfortable “side cut” pockets. The previous model also had an open small pocket on the right thigh, this one has a small zippered pocket there instead. The current description says that there are two zippered pockets, there is only the one zippered and it’s on the right thigh. I bought the 36” waist and it runs big by about an inch. It would be better if there was elastic in the waistband. I’m having a local tailor put elastic in the waistband. All in all this is an excellent, very lightweight pair of pants that is great for hot summer wear. The inner mesh helps to ventilate and is not noticeable in the dark steel color.
This edition of the sandfly fits tighter, clings to my thighs much more than the earlier version (the one without the zippered side pocket). That makes me sad. Tighter is hotter and takes more energy to lift your legs against the pants' resistance when climbing up. I have them side by side, old and new, both 34 waist. Try them on in turn, and the difference is painfully obvious.
Lightweight. Very breathable. Quick drying. I prefer hiking pants while in the backcountry and these do a great job. Also worked as great tick defense in Missouri. Last summer we were camping surrounded by ticks, but these pants put up a great defense. Bought a second pair to wear around the yard this summer when the mosquitoes get bad.
Mosquitoes and biting insects love me. This is my 4th pair of Sandfly pants. They were my go-to choice for walking the Camino de Santiago in Spain when every ounce counts because you are carrying everything. These are the lightest weight of all my performance slacks and I love the deep pockets in front. On the Camino you are walking through cities and countryside and you never know when you are going to encounter mosquitoes. I never got bitten when I wore these slacks. When it gets hot, you roll up the bottom and snap them in place so they are about the length of capris or what a friend of ours calls "man pants". The airflow vents are always letting the heat escape in hot weather but I don't every remember them letting in the cold when the temperature got down to the high 30's in the morning. I thought the horizontal vents along the inside of the leg might let in mosquito bites but this never happened. I keep 2 pairs in Spain and 2 pairs in the US.
