Temperature ratings are intended as a guideline to help you compare products, rather than a guarantee of warmth, since many different factors contribute to your comfort while you sleep. Backpacking bags are typically rated for temperature according to an independent testing protocol—currently International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 23537, though some older items followed European Norm (EN) 13537. Testing is based on a person wearing one base layer and a pair of socks, sleeping on an insulated surface with a minimum R-value of 5.38.

Each bag then gets 2 ratings: the Comfort rating is the lowest temperature at which the bag will keep the average "cold sleeper" comfortable, and the Lower Limit rating is the lowest temperature at which the bag will keep the average "warm sleeper" comfortable. Some brands determine their own temperature rating by aligning to the Comfort rating for women’s bags, to the Lower Limit rating for men’s bags, or somewhere in the middle for nongendered bags.

For many of us, collecting outdoor gear is more than a pastime...it's an obsession. Sleeping bags can be a challenge -- you want to select the right cold rating for the conditions you expect on the trail, and as a result we often wind up with a bunch of different bags in our gear closets. What if you could have one versatile system that replaces several bags? Big Agnes set out to create such a system with the Lost Ranger 3N1 bag system. The inner mummy-style bag is rated to 35 degrees for 3 season use. The outer bag is a more open style and is rated for 50 degrees, making it ideal for spring and summer use. Combine the two and you have a bag system rated for 15 degrees, making it suitable for all seasons unless you live in really cold climates (I do not). The system has a couple of really cool features. I haven't tried Big Agnes products before, and clearly a lot of thought went into their gear. The pad cinch system on the outer bag offers a sleeve pocket for narrow insulated pads and a set of corded flaps for wider pads. I tried the cinch system with several different pads and they all stayed in place overnight, making that late-night pad readjustment a thing of the past. There's even a little pillow garage in the outer bag! The inner bag is comfortable and is designed for back or side sleepers. By itself, it is quite cozy. Combined with the outer bag, I enjoyed a few evenings down into the low 40s in perfect comfort. The system comes with a stuff sack and a mesh storage bag, which are nice touches. The gripes are few but worth pointing out. First, the documentation that came with the system stated that there's a cordlock for the inner bag hood. My sample did not have have that, leaving me with no way to cinch the hood to keep out drafts. Also, there is no draft collar on the inner bag. Will the production version come with a hood cinch or not? Second, BA claims their zippers are anti-snag, but I had repeated snags when trying to manipulate the zippers from the inside of the bag. From outside, the zippers work smoothly. Some improvement could be given to the fabric around the zippers to prevent snags. Both bags pack down small and are reasonably light, thanks to lightweight fabric and Downtek stuffing. Pretty impressive size/weight for backpacking, bikepacking, or car camping. I really enjoy the concept and most of the function behind the 3N1 system. With a little refinement, this system could be the solution to a closet full of sleeping bags!

Please take this review with the caveat that I am a big guy. At 5'11 - 250 with broad shoulders, the sidewinder inner bag was just too small, and I had to return it. I love the concept of this set! And, it was very warm. 2 nights with lows in the teens, and I never felt chilly at all. Considering that I was sleeping with the inner bag unzipped to the belly, that was awesome! Curse of my life- high quality great rendered useless by my body shape. If you aren't as large as me, or if you don't mind being bound up, this is an incredible sleep system. Big Agnes, please make a large/long version!

Fantastic 3 in 1 Sleeping Bag!

I had the chance to test out the Big Agnes Lost Ranger 3 in 1 sleeping bag recently. This was my first 3 in 1 bag as currently I have two other bags, one for summer/shoulder seasons and one for winter. I was very excited to try this as I knew it could be my go to in virtually any conditions and give me an option if the weather turned from what was expected. I initially played with it in the house just to get a feel for it and see how the pad integrated with the bag. It seemed like it was going to be great, except the zipper would get snagged, both on the mummy bag as well as the outer bag. A few days later, I officially tried it out. The night was forecast to be in the mid to upper 30 degrees and I was blown away by just how warm only the outer bag was. I initially used only the outer as to get a feel for how low it could go. I do tend to be a warm sleeper but run cool any other time. I was easily able to be comfortable down to the mid to upper 40's. Before going to sleep, I did opt to use both as to not wake up cold, but was still very impressed with just the outer. Reflecting on the first use, I was very comfortable. I enjoyed the size and cut of the bags, especially the inner one. It was a bit roomier than what I was used to, yet still stayed nice and toasty. Turning over or moving around was no issue whatsoever. I am 6'1" and 160 lbs so definitely not a real big guy, but for me, the fit was spot on. I didn't suffer any cold spots either. The only issue I had was the zipper getting snagged on the material, on both bags, whether zipping up or down. Since the first adventure, I was able to use it a few more times in the last couple weeks. The weather was pretty consistent every time I used it though, so I can't really speak for pushing the limits of it. There wasn't any moisture at the times when I was using it, so I also can't say how well the DWR treatment is on it. The pad sleeve is definitely a nice touch to keep everything in order and not inevitably roll off. The temperature the bags are rated to is great and the ability to utilize both of them for a real warm night was fantastic. Also the weight of the bag, especially for the temperature rating, is great. They compressed down nicely and didn't take up much space which was very much appreciated as I usually try to go as minimal and lightweight as possible. Needless to say, if it was warmer, using only the outer bag would be such an awesome option and one that I'm really looking forward to later next spring and summer. It has been mentioned, but the only thing I didn't like about the bag were the zippers. I would even go slow and be careful to not snag it and it still seemed to catch the fabric. It also made it even more difficult to do in a darker environment or at night and getting it unstuck one time was an bear considering I was inside of both bags and it got stuck higher up the teeth which didn't allow me to work at it from a good angle. Regardless, this Lost Ranger bag is great. Stubborn zippers or not, I'll definitely be using this bag a lot more in the future. If you're looking for a very flexible bag to keep you comfortable across a huge range of temperatures, look no further.

Best sleeping bag for minimalists

Until receiving this sleeping bag, I had three separate bags and didn’t see any alternative. Being a four season camper/backpacker you physically can’t use a summer bag in winter temps and you don’t want to try using a winter bag in summer temps. This sleeping bag system solves that issue by having three different setups. I’ve used the bag on about seven overnight trips in the past two months and have tried all three of the setups. It’s been comfortable and warm throughout. I am very tall and have found it to be surprising roomy. If you’re a minimalist looking for one bag that can handle a wide variety of environments and is built to last - this is it.

EXCELLENT!! But he cautious..

Bought this anticipating a trip to Australia.. ended up using it on a 21 day backpacking trip in the Owyhee Desert in October/ November. The BEST Sleeping bag. As a 6’1 woman I was looking for something that could accommodate my height and this was IT. The rest of my crew genuinely loved my bag. Be careful with the zipper, move too quickly and you will rip a hole in the bag like I did. Very easy to patch though. Word of advice- your R value on your sleeping pad MATTERS! Accidentally used this bag on a late summer trip where temps went down to 40 and froze. Make sure if you’re going in colder months to pair this with a good R value sleeping pad. I also used a liner on my 21 day trip for extra warmth and it was perfect.

Quality ultralight gear for bikepacking

Excellent quality as expected from BA. A single solution to multi season problems. Side sleepers like me find bags hard to adjust in mummy bags. This fixes that. The best part for me is both the mattress and pillow stays. No more rolling off and getting cold. Since there are double bags, of course there will be more zippers to deal with but not sure how anyone can complain about that when you know what you bought. It’s not an actual problem”.

Outer bag is awesome for overlanding.

When I first received the sleeping bag, I was intrigued by the two bag concept. When put to use, the two bag concept did not work well for me. I am a little older, so using the restroom (bush or Gatorade bottle) is not all that uncommon. I found that getting out of two sleeping bags was a little tedious. The other issue I had was zipping the inner bag into the zipper of the outer bag (most likely user error). Last but not least, as I get older, I am finding that the confinement of a mummy-bag is quite uncomfortable. Having two bags seems to exacerbate the feeling. Now onto the good. The outer bag was amazing when used in my Habitat Camper). It provided the perfect amount of insulation and I felt free inside the bag. I will use this in my overland set-up for sure. It is light, takes up very little space which makes it ideal for overlanding. The outer bag has inspired me to purchase a new bag. I will purchasing a Big Agnes rectangular bag for tent camping and using the outer shell for overlanding and staying in the cabins at Camp High Sierra (Mammoth, Ca).

Great set, worth it!

Really love this set -so versatile. Do multi-day trips across big changes in elevation. Last trip night temps went from 50 degrees to 18 degrees F. I slept at the perfect temp every night. I have used each piece separately and found they work well that way. I am petite with large hips. I was always freezing around my hips in my previous bag. Not a problem with this set. I was worried about not having a short but the extra space is nice on the outer bag and I have not had a problem with the inner bag. I am able to bunch it up at my feet without them getting cold or having a lot of dead space. Pros: 360 insulation for inner bag Plenty of room in inner bag -doesnt really feel like a mummy- plenty of room at hips Able to adjust system to be comfortable in any temp Dont have to carry extra sleep gear to accommodate changing temps. Pillow sleeve helps keep my pillow in place Pad wrap keeps me on the pad, even on a slight hill Weight is worth it for the versatility and each separate piece is really light if the temps accommodate Outside bag can be used like a quilt with both sides unzipped Cons Inner bag is slick on a pad when used alone Not easy to “wear” sleeping bag in colder/winter weather Bags get caught in zippers easily- Really have to pay attention Inner bag zipper is too short- can be difficult to adjust foot temp Hood doesn't have a cinch strap so opening doesn't close down tight enough in cold weather Would be nice if pillow sleeve was a little longer. Edge hits right in the middle of my pillow. Inner bag doesnt have a collar on it. Overall a great bag and worth the price especially when you consider you dont have to buy multiple bags for different conditions. The bag should have zipper at bottom of foot box or long zipper to bottom so that temp can be better regulated and so you can walk around/sit in your bag with your boots out for really cold days/eves. Also would be great if the zipper on the outer bag would go all the way around so you could remove top “quilt”

Versatile and light

I received the Big Agnes Lost Ranger 3N1 15 to test out and after getting used to the unusual design, I really like it! The bag is designed so that you can have a quiver of one sleeping bag for nearly all conditions. I would say it fits the bill. I used the lightweight outer bag in 55 degree weather and stayed perfectly warm in just a t-shirt and shorts. I combined the bags for a low-40s night and again was toasty in shorts and t-shirt. I haven't tried in below-freezing weather so can't speak to it's rating as a 15 degree bag. The outer bag is designed to minimize weight, down baffles on top and a thin sheet on the bottom. Similar idea as quilt but instead of sleeping directly on your pad, you have a silky sheet. The bottom of the sheet wraps around the edges of the sleeping pad and cinches in place with a draw string. It took a couple of nights to get it dialed in but once I did, the bag stayed snug against my sleeping pad. There's also a pillow pocket that my inflatable pillow fit perfectly in and stayed put through the night. The outer bag has zippers on both sides which allows you to open as needed for climate adjustment. The inner bag is a pretty snug mummy bag that fits inside the outer bag. When I first got in, I was worried that it would feel constricting and that I would get all twisted up when I slept (I roll A LOT when I sleep). When using the two bags together, I found that the inner bag rolled with me as I turned and that we both rolled smoothly inside the outer bag. The outer bag remained fixed to my sleeping pad and provided enough space for me and the inner bag to change positions from side to side. It seems like the two bag system offers a lot of versatility. You can have the inside bag unzipped if too hot or both bags zipped up when it's cold. The system did a great job of keeping me on my pad in spite of my frequent rolls and also kept me on my pillow! The latter is typically a big issue - pillow slips off my pad or I roll of the pillow. Each bag weighs about 1 lb 8 ounces and for much of the year, I would likely just use the outer bag. The one downside of this sleep system is that the two bags are very similar in color. If I were in a rush when packing, I might grab the wrong bag. A couple of things to consider: because the outer bag isn't insulated on the bottom, your warmth will depend on the R rating of your pad. I'm not sure I'd want to use this with a low R rated inflatable pad. Also, I'm 5"11 and I fit snug in the regular size bag. Fortunately, I'm mostly curled up somewhat when I sleep so not a big deal. But if you like to sleep straight and are close to 6', I'd go for the long.

A very versatile sleep system

This is a very nice and a versatile sleeping bag system that can be used in quite a few configurations/occasions. I did not think I would like this 3-in-1 system--I thought it would be cumbersome and heavy and just not easy to use. None of it was true. This is a nicely designed product that can be easily used in all three configurations. Features that I loved: pad cinch system to keep the insulated pad in place (used two for winter camping--inflatable and solid foam) and the pillow barn (used inflatable pillow). Keeping the pad(s) and pillow in place is huge for a good night's sleep for me since they always seem to move away from the spot where I need them. Features that I didn't like as much: zippers and their positioning. Perhaps I am just not used to them for now, but it was not super easy to navigate opening/closing and getting in/out. Although I am not quite sure what can be done about that--the space is tight getting in/out the bag so it's difficult to navigate zippering no matter what design is implemented. Once you're in it's really cosy. I also like that the system can be easily used in a bivy (so perfect for winter camping if the temperatures remain above 15-20F). All in all, a great product that can be used in quite a few ways and over all seasons. It's probably not for the minimalists, but for someone who doesn't care about couple of extra parts/ounces to carry it would be a great addition to their camping arsenal.
