Looked at many weatherproof down and synthetic camp blankets. This one wins hands down. I’m tall. This item is large. I have a great sleeping set up with my bag and pad. I want something with high utility that I can wrap around myself as I wait for coffee in the early morning. This unit has an opening - perfect poncho! I need an extra blanket, something light and un-encumbering to wrap around when I was up in the early crisp mornings. This is it. Little loops to grab and re-position around me so it doesn’t drop into the lake I standing in. Sooo nice. Get this! It’s a bit more but high utility makes it totally worth it.
I think this is a very solid quilt. I used it primarily as an underquilt for the Kammok Mantis Ultralight hammock system on a recent 3 day trip in the White Mountains. It did the job in terms of keeping me warm, and packs down very well (especially if you use compression bags). Attaching it to the Kammok hammock system is super easy, but it also doubles well as a light quilt. I'm skeptical this would keep you warm down to 30, however. I sleep warm and temps were in the low 50s with mist and I felt that this was right on the edge of not being enough. I would not personally take this out for anything much below 40s to be honest. That being said, it's a high quality build, and was a solid purchase for mildly cool hikes.
Excellent light weight down quilt. Super light weight, packable, lofty, very insulting & warm. Great piece of gear. I just got the Mountain Blanket and the Mesa Mat as well, recommend the blankets for a bulletproof, heavy use, day to day option because the down filled quilts aren’t as hearty, for example ground use, pets, & vehicle. Overall a great and very warm quilt. I live and camp in Northern California & know that I will be very comfortable in any condition in my Kammok and with this awesome gear.
This works great if you are in dry conditions or are using it as an underquilt or poncho around the campsite. But if you are using this as a primary means of warmth its not great. The 30 degree rating is a maximum temp rating and its a chilly bag under 40 degrees. It's also fragile, with a snap already broken from the store. The lofting loses most of its insulation due to high humidity or natural perspiration so part way through the night the bag becomes largely useless. As a note I am a warm sleeper and have spent a lot of time backpacking. I was using this with a nemo switchback pad which worked well. The quilt itself just preforms poorly. I WOULD NOT get this as a winter piece of kit.
Got 2 of these firebelly blankets recently and love them. I got them to serve as a top quilt and underquilt while hammock camping. I haven’t had a chance to test them outside yet. But have used them to sleep and lounge around. It is super light weight and pretty warm. I am 6’6 and the blanket has plenty of length to cover me up. I really like being able to cinch up the bottom to make a footbox. My dog also loves crawling under it for a nap.
Everyone should have one of these! We have used it constantly, camping and hiking. It’s great for winter hikes to snuggle up at the top of a mountain and watch the sunrise. It’s extremely warm and I can easily wrap it around myself and a few of my children. The snaps can be used in so many different ways. Packs down small, material is soft and resists dirt, and the loft is wonderful. Highly recommend!!
I sleep cold when camping, so I'm always on the lookout for the extra edge to keep my core warm through the night. I have to say I am 100% impressed with the versatility of the Firebelly. It's light and airy, fits perfectly as a top quilt in my hammock and I love that I can make a partial foot box with it while still being able to comfortably stretch out my legs while sleeping. It's versatility is amazing - you need an extra poncho to keep warm? Need a quick underquilt for your hammock, need a sleeping bag for warmer weather? Firebelly does it all!
This is my new favorite backpacking item. Even when I don't need the trail quilt because I have a sleeping bag, I tend to carry it anyways because I love using it as a poncho, and I use it as a pillow. I haven't used this quilt solo on a backpacking trip yet, but I have no doubt that it will hold up to any weather around 40 degrees because I sit outside with it in 30 degree weather all the time. When combined with a 20 degree sleeping bag (Big Agnes Sidewinder 20), the two items make your bag somewhere around a 0 degree bag. When I carry my hammock, I also carry the firebelly so that it's more comfortable to sit in the hammock as a chair. A lot of the time, I carry both my sleeping bag and the firebelly with my hammock to make the hammock into a super soft chair.
I bought a different popular camping blanket prior to this, but it just wasn't very soft or warm. So I put in the effort to research what I would really like, and was excited to find that people claimed the Kammok Firebelly was both warm and soft, plus very versatile for hammockers and campers (i.e., poncho mode, underquilt mode, topquilt mode, sleeping bag mode.... need I continue?). Well, after using this blanket for a few months, add me to the list of those who are impressed. This blanket is really warm in cold weather without being too hot indoors (I sometimes use it as a comforter in bed). If you haven't used camping blankets, they can be pretty slippery and leave you uncovered, so sleeping bag mode is more useful than I initially thought. And once you learn to put on the poncho before you get out of bed, you will be as sold on this blanket as I am. It even comes with both a loose long-term storage bag and a solidly-constructed compression bag. The one thing I can't attest to is very cold temperatures. No blanket can do miracles, but for the size and weight of this thing I can't imagine a blanket being much warmer. Even the seams are done well so wind doesn't cut through. It would easily be my go-to top quilt on a chilly night. I paid for this blanket. I wasn't sponsored in any way. But sometimes excellent products deserve excellent reviews. And this is one. Do yourself the favor and get it - you won't regret it!
I loved the original Firebelly, so I was very interested when I heard of an updated version. I really like that this new Firebelly can double as an underquilt. It was a very clever design decision to combine the Firebelly and Koala. Been using my Firebelly as a minimalist sleeping bag, now I can use it as an under-quilt! My only gripe, which is very minor, I thought I might have been able to connect the original Firebelly to the new version with the attached snaps. Thus making a two person sleeping quilt. This works, but not all of the snaps on the new generation and the loops of the old generation line up. Not a big deal, but something to be aware of.
