I was looking for a larger day pack so I could have one pack for bat research and devote my old Stratos 24 to SAR. The Tempest 30 is much lighter empty, but has a few nagging design flaws. The lid design does nothing to close the area from the harness to the main compartment. When bending or crawling in rhododendron, the lid flops and hits me in the head, even cinched all the way down. For lacking a frame like the Stratos, the Tempest back panel breathes pretty decent but is impossible to clean. I had so loved the idea of an external hydration sleeve! But this design never secures that space. The tiny fiddly strap that is supposed to secured the bladder is poorly located. It catches hemlock needles, dirt and sticks all day.
I bought this bag to do a hike in the Alps where I planned to sleep in huts and therefore didn't need to carry cookware, food, or a tent. It performed marvelously on that hike, but what I wasn't prepared for was how many other contexts it would come in handy. I most recently took it on a four day coastal walk. The climate was temperate enough to only need a sleeping bag liner, and with a friend carrying the tent, I was able to fit everything else I needed in this guy with ease. It makes me feel silly for how long I was relying solely on a 65L. Also, at one point something sticky was spilled all over the bag and I machine washed it out of necessity, and it bounced back 100% after the experience which I was thrilled by. Super happy with this purchase.
I wanted to love this pack, but it just wouldn't let me. Positive: It is a nice size, comes in great colors and has some nice pockets. Cons: I found the external frame on the pack to be extremely uncomfortable after about 10 miles. It didn't matter how I adjusted the pack, it dug into my lower back. The hydration pocket is very difficult to load and does not hold more than 2 liters of water (and even that is tough). It's impossible to reach the side pockets while wearing the pack and the waist band pockets are just a little too small for a phone/camera. The hiking pole holder set up is not practical and I ended up having to hold my poles and lastly, at this price point it is disappointing there is no rainfly.
Bought this pack for my wife just over two years ago. Only used for light day hiking, nothing crazy. The pack is literally coming apart at the seams. The back panel is separating from the main part of the pack. Seems that Osprey prioritized weight over durability with this one. Two years of light use is a little ridiculous for a pack costing $190.
Lightweight pack just what I was looking for. I am walking the Camino Portuguese and need a 30 liter pack that is lightweight. I like the stretch side pockets and the panel that stretches effectively giving more space so I can put muddy shoes, wet gear, etc. in it. The only thing I don't like is the weird small pocket on one of the straps. Not big enough for much if anything except a snack bar. Wish it could hold my small phone. Otherwise it works well.
Have owned this pack for 2 years now, mainly used for light day hiking. Nothing crazy like throwing it down slick rock slopes, but the pack is already falling apart in key areas. Weight seems to have been more important than durability when Osprey designed the pack.
I went from a daypack without load lifters to this little slice of heaven and can honestly say it's been night and day. My posture is better, my shoulders don't hurt, and I can bring an impressive amount of stuff with all the storage this pack boasts. Love Love Love! And not to mention the color is beautiful and vibrant (Violac Purple)
I'm obsessed with my magenta tempest, it's a beautiful bag truly. The size is perfect for a bigger day pack and yes I do find myself bringing more with me. But it's perfect for when you need to bring extra layers on the trail. Excellent for work, cycling, traveling. For me, it's enough room for one overnight with everything, 2 nights making some sacrifices. Super comfy for biking although I wish the 30 came with the helmet strap. Love the hip belt pockets although the zipper is very sticky on those so I usually need 2 hands to open. The XS fits wonderfully (I'm tall but short torso) and I appreciate the modular fit with with the velcro. The frame is very comfy and not too warm. I will say, it's a soft frame so I worry it may not wear well over time. However, knowing osprey's quality and guarantee, I feel confident this bag will serve me well for many years, I'm very fond of it. Absolutely recommend.
I bought this pack at a store and thought it would be great for day hiking, but I'm going to have to return it. It wasn't clear at the store that this only accommodates 10-20 lbs. Just the water for a long hike will use up a lot of that. I also like to do photography while I hike, and this pack, while physically large enough, cannot support even a days water and food plus camera stuff. I had hoped to use it for work fieldwork as well, but it is definitely not capable of lugging equipment with that weight limitation. It seems most Osprey day packs now have this reduced weight limit (probably fabric/material choices), so I will have to go with a different brand. The frustrating thing is that Osprey's main competitor sells a size 28L that is only 4 oz heavier than this pack but can carry 35 lbs. 4 oz is less than my cellphone. So frustrated these packs have become so limited.
I had high hopes for this bag, but after 6 months of heavy field work use, I cannot recommend it. The back frame and the water bottle holders take up so much space that the internal capacity suffers. I have a Celeste 29 and it holds almost double what I can ti in this supposedly 30L bag. There are only two smaller pockets in the whole bag. Nowhere to put pencils or sunglasses. Pros: - The back frame and its adjustability is nice - Nice water bottle holders that haven't stretched out yet - Stuff area on the front is convenient Cons: - Water bottles take up internal pack room - Not enough pockets! And none are easily accessible (for pencils, first aid) except the front stuff area which is not secure - Does not come with a rain cover - Difficult to access belt pockets when the belt is clipped - If you put anything in the top pocket it's very difficult to zip back up - Top carrying strap annoyingly hides in the frame, and is not comfortable to use
