Sizing Notes

Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.

Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:

Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.

Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.

Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

IS THIS SHOE TRUE TO SIZE? The product Features above will provide a suggestion if Altra advises you to size up or down in this particular shoe. If no such note exists, please order your regular size.

Some good changes; try them on first.

There redesigned outsole gives a lot more stiffness and the flex area is further back in the shoe, so you get better heel-to-toe transfer than the 1.5. More rubber underfoot instead of foam, and the famous “squeak” and mud flap are gone. The shoe has less volume and height in the toe area than the 1.5- width is similar but it feels more cramped. If you wear the 1.5 you will want to try this on before buying. The upper fabric feels less ‘premium’ than the 1.5, and the shoe is advertised as a full ounce lighter but it really feels like a lot less shoe on the foot, which is good and bad- but probably an improvement. And they gave us some colors that a lot of people have asked for.

Narrow shoe. Major change from Timp 1.5
Stephen
The Timp 2 is a stylish shoe, like other Altras, feature soft cushioning on a zero drop shoe. Altra is also renown for their wide toe box. This wide toe box and softer cushioning reversed years of what I thought was chronic foot pain. I ordered Timp 2 to refresh my worn out pair of Timp 1.5. Many people owned Timp 1.5 because of the wide toe box. 1.5 also had a four point gaiter latch. It was a very good shoe. Timp 2 has been significantly narrowed and there are only 2 gaiter latch points. I was disappointed that this popular trail running product line centered around the wide toe box would be modified significantly. As an enthusiastically loyal customer, I feel alienated and disappointed. Why would Altra do this to a product line that brought growth and brand recognition to the company? VF Corporation announced its acquisition of Altra at the end of Q2 2018. Timp 1.5 was launched in Q3 2018 which means it was one of the final products not significantly influenced by the the financially driven goals of a large publicly traded corporation. VF Corp owns many brands, some that REI shoppers are intimately familiar with: The North Face, Smartwool, and Icebreakers. I imagine corporate saw an opportunity for synergies–investors love this–by sharing production facilities, molds, dies, supply chains, and etc from their portfolio of shoe brands like The North Face, Timberlands, Vans, and etc. It is natural for corporations who have met growth targets to change goals to improve profits. Often, cannibalizing the original customer base who seeded the brand and enabled its success is just part of doing business. I returned the Timp 2 on the day they were delivered. I scoured the internet for Timp 1.5 to no avail and only found complaints on forums sharing my experience. On the positive, I found the Lone Peak 5 to be the closest fitting alternative although it is a little tight on my left first metatarsal head. It could be that it hasn’t fully broken in or the upper is less flexible. I was told the Timp 3 will be wider, but they’re not at my local REI and some reviews I’ve seen on the mfr site state a similar fit to Timp 2.

Super comfortable but not durable

I’ve been wearing Timps since the 1.5 model (which were the best - not sure why they keep changing them for the worse) and I’d give these 5 stars for comfort but like a 2 for durability. I haven’t gotten holes like many have, but the uppers are delaminating in several places. I’ve had a few pairs of these and this particular pair seemed to fall apart very quickly. These are one of the few shoe models that are comfortable for me as I have some foot issues so I’ve been putting up with the durability issues so I can keep running. Wish they would go back to the 1.5 design.

Best fitting trail shoe! However, 150 miles falling apart.

This is hands-down the best fitting trail shoe I've ever had. I almost immediately purchased a second pair so I could keep a pair at the office. However the shoe started falling apart before a hundred miles and is completely worthless by 150. My other pair is also in pretty bad shape so this appears to be a design flaw not a lemon. I will be waiting for the 2.5 or the 3 before trying another pair.

Embrace the space? Huh?

I was a big fan of the Timp 1.5, in spite of the fact that they always got holes in the upper near the big toe after about 200 miles. But now they've gone and messed them up! I had four pair of Timp 1.5 and put well over 400 miles on each of them. But after only two or three miles in the Timp 2.0 I knew that they were going to be returned. I don't know if it's because they are narrower or have a shorter stack height or what, all I know is that they hurt. The most distal and medial eyelet was digging into my first mtp joint. I wanted to love these so much, but I cannot recommend them to runners & hikers who are used to the Timp 1.5.

Best time yet.

This is the best Timp yet. Found the fit, comfort, and added traction to be better then the 1.5. But quality is down right awful, timp 1, lasted 150 miles, thought maybe it was just a bad pair. Timp 1.5 got 300 miles on them. ok on a pr of trail shoes! Thinking Altra got the kinks worked out ordered the 2.0. Out of box loved it. The fit while not as roomy as the past versions still worked for me. The added lugs greatly helped on the loose stuff. But what was the quality issue? The same as ALL prior Timps huge holes/riping on the inside of the foot right were it meets the sole. Timp 2 not even lasting 100 miles the worst yet, and they are also tearing on the outside of the foot as well. While I'm not giving up on altra, the superior and torin seam to last, just no more Timp

Like a sunset - doesn’t last long

I love the fit of these shoes and the sure footed feel they provide on trail in both wet and dry conditions, my only grip is the premature wear on both soles and uppers I’ve had to do some repairs with shoe glue and I’ll most likely buy another pair as I love the toe box space and zero drop , this is my third pair of Timp 2 my first pair lasted two seasons second one season and I’m just breaking out the new ones

Comfortable but poor durability

Shoes feel great on my feet as far as traction, support and cushion for long days on the trail. However I have only 160 miles on this pair, babied them, meticulously cleaned them after each use and there is already a large hole all the way through both layers of the fabric on the inside of the shoe near the arch. The material used on the TIMP 1.5 failed the same way for me after about 200 miles as well and I was told by REI retail staff that its expected. These shoes are just not durable for less than a year of use and approximately 10-12 runs I guess I would expect more for the $$$.

Amazing fit and comfort - wish they lasted

I loved these shoes. Just the right amount of stack height and excellent support, plenty of room for my fat toes. Really I have short toes, so my forefoot has to fit up in the 'toe box' and these shoes fit great. I usually size up a full size in other brands from my measured foot length, in these I only had to go up a half. I have read comments that others think there is less room in these, but I think the width is the same, but there may be decreased volume. Wasn't an issue for me. I really didn't have any issues comfort wise on runs less than 100 miles, I did have some bruising on a 100 mile race on the edges of my feet, but I don't really fault the shoes. My biggest complaint is that the uppers started to separate from the soles at 350 miles, but with ALTRA's awesome warranty and customer service they are replacing them with a new pair. So if I get 700 miles total out of one purchase I am a very happy customer as that would be 200 miles more than I normally get. Not every product lasts or performs as expected, but when a company stands by the product and does right by the customer that earns my repeat business. Thank you Altra!

Sizing

I’m having trouble with the sizing of Altras, which is a shame because I really like their shoes. These are either my 9 or 10th pair. Most have been great, but the last 3 pairs of trail runners I’ve had trouble. I wear typically 10.5’s. Two pairs ago the 10.5 was too small. Barely, and I thought maybe the would wear in, but they didn’t. So the next pair I got 11’s— fit was sloppy. So then got this pair of Times, 10.5, and slightly too small. I’m gonna try wearing these in. I don’t like sloppy. In the meantime my road runners (3 pairs) have all been true to size. The last pair are the most comfortable running shoes ever.

4 star shoe, 1 star durability.

After a little over 300 miles, the uppers are totally trashed. Both shoes have blowouts in the mid foot on both sides (4 blowouts!). The soles have plenty of life left, but My socks are visible through the sides of the shoes in many places. I've never had a trail shoe blowout this quickly and utterly disintegrate on the sides like this. I really liked the balance between cushion and trail feel, but I absolutely wouldnt buy these again. And looking online at reviews of this and other Altras, this seems to be a persistent issue. Yikes. So close to a great shoe.
